JVC is going all out for this camera....first, the great price of $3999. Second, a free Rokinon lens or a Metabones adapter, or....for those of you that have a Panasonic AF 100, JVC will let you trade it in on a new LS 300(4K S35mm) and, get this, for an instant rebate of $500!!! I don't recall a manufacturer ever doing a camera launch like this.
So, if you are in LA, make sure you sign up for our LA Debut of the LS 300 on Weds, March 18th at 1pm:

Jim, are you saying "Get $500 for your AF100 on trade in? That's not a big deal. AF100 still selling on ebay and craigslist for $1200-$1500. The $3999 price with the Lens or Adapter rebate is a good deal! Not trying to rain on JVC's parade, but let's keep things in perspective.

There is going to be continued downward pressure on the used AF 100's value with all the cameras that are coming this year....more features for less money. I suspect that AF 100's value will take a big hit right around NAB because of those new cameras.....I'm sure that most of those AF 100 packages that are for sale include more than just the camera body. I think one needs to keep prospective on what JVC is offering.....a convenient and easy way to move into a great new camera (w/ 4K) without the hassle of selling it yourself... sending the camera or meeting up and doing a transaction from someone you probably don't know...time is money.... Also, the lenses that you already have with your AF 100, seamlessly move over to the new camera...
Overall, what JVC is offering is an incredible deal, no matter how you cut it.....

None of this will matter if what the LS 300 offers is a subpar image. Is it significantly better in low light than the AF100? Is the image significantly better as far as highlight handling and DR compared to the AF100? If not, I'm personally not interested, but to each his own. The LS 300 has one fabulous idea - the scan mapping that allows the use of all those lenses without affecting the native angle of view. But that by itself won't matter if what you end up with is meh. Until it is fully tested, I wouldn't buy it - it's like the proverbial pig in a poke... "here's a wonderful pig in a poke!" "can I see it?" "no, but if you buy unseen, I'll drop the price!" - no thanks. I'd rather pay full price and know what I'm buying. Anyway, with the camera prices dropping fast these days and the obsolete barely after release, I have a feeling you'll be able to pick this up at a discount anyway in just a few more months, unless the camera is just outstanding, in which case I'll gladly pay the full price. YMMV.

Sounds like it's time for another Zacuto camera shootout! There are a lot of new cameras I'd like to see put through the tests:
JVC LS300, Panaxonic X1000, Sony FS7, ARRI Amira, Red Dragon, Canon C100 Mark II, Blackmagic URSA, AJA Cion.

We live in exciting times! :)

We've had the camera for 1 week now and everything we've seen indicates it is a winner....yes, the low light is better than the AF100 (physics alone-S35 vs MFT chip and 2015 technology vs. 2009) and the image is definitely in Canon/Panasonic land. We are shooting our demo footage this weekend...shooting day and night, 1080 & 4K, and recording in camera as well as out to a Shogun. We'll debut the footage at the event here on the 18th and will post it on the usual outlets.

CORRECTION, CORRECTION, CORRECTION!

I made a mistake and I profusely apologize.......you cannot combine this offer with the free Metabones/ free Rokinon lens deal....it's one or the other. Again, I'm sorry for the mis-information and feel free to stop by and flog me!

Signed,
one embarrased dummkopf!

I doubt this camera. I'd be thrilled to be proven wrong, but I doubt this camera.

It's still 8-bit.

And a top data rate of 150mbps still means 42.25mbps for each HD quadrant, or 50 mbps in regular HD.

I seriously question whether that's going to be enough to deliver an image that is what people are after from a camera with the word "Cinema" in its name.

But I agree the form factor is great - this is going to be THE killer cam for shooting car-dealer commercials in 4K.

It will surely have a strong place in the working video production world, but I suspect that Image Quality is not going to be the reason folks are going to look at this camera over any of the other 4K offerings.

To avoid future confusion, I edited your initial post to say "or" instead of "and", presuming that that is the correct interpretation based on your post above, yes?

If anybody is actually going to trade their AF100 for $500 off I'll gladly buy their AF100 from them for the same price and put it to good use!

...we are going to find out this weekend when we shoot in both 1080 & 4K, both in-camera and out to a Odyssey or Shogun, at night and day. I've posted this before, but from what we can tell looking at the live picture on a 46" TV Logic (SDI) and a Panasonic 4K monitor, it is definitely a "Cinema look" that we're seeing.

I hope Jim's test footage includes indoors..with available doco style and controlled supplemental lighting situations. Dare I say an interview scenario? Seek out some typically unforgiving patterns to evaluate moire etc.
