Jvc gy-l300

Is there a 'sweet spot' where you get the best image from the sensor(?)

My guess would be Yes, there will be a best crop for UHD footage and for HD footage, but they may not be the same sensor crop.

For example, if we assume that the full sensor is 3840 x 2160 then theoretically the best image for UHD would be using the full sensor (a 1-to-1 pixel-to-image ratio). But shooting HD footage on the full sensor may have digital artifacts or moire depending on the sampling/downscaling. The HD sweet spot on this supposed sensor might be at a half crop, again at a 1-to-1 pixel to image ratio.

But according to my calculations (super-35 size, 13.5MP) the sensor would be 4243 x 3182. So again it depends on how the sensor is sampled.

Perhaps someone close to Jim Martin's store would be willing to borrow the camera for a day to run some tests?

I would think the laws of physics would require at least a theoretical fall-off in quality with variable scan mapping footage.

Yes, in theory, I agree. But there could also be several sweet spots of cropped sensor size with similar image qualities depending on if you're shooting UHD or HD footage.

I think there's a lot of negativity for this camera, mainly from those with ridiculously high expectations for something costing $4k. For me, the footage so far doesn't look great, but in the right hands it could have potential. Without wishing to be rude to those that created the footage, none of it looks to have been shot well or used in real situations by a high level crew - pans across trees, beaches in California and shots of f***king ducks on ponds on again! When a pro crew gets hold of one, it will be good to see what it can really do. Matt Allard's footage looks to be the fairest example so far, I'd like him to get on the road with one for a news piece. At first sight, the highlight clipping looks to be the main issue, it's blowing out far too easily - but properly exposed, perhaps with grad NDs used (remember those? They seem to have gone the same way as ProMists these days) maybe it will be pretty decent, especially if the settings can be mastered to give better rolloff, like we all had to learn with the AF101. What it's not, nor clearly meant to be, is a cinema camera - and why should it? It's a low-budget, owner operator camera for events, run & gun and corporate / web work - for those purposes it could be pretty good. Yes it's a little 'video-y' but that's not the end of the world. The form factor is nice for single shooters and the lens options are good (though I have to say i think maybe it confuses the issue - perhaps they'd have been better off just making it M43 and pitching to the GH4 / AF100 crowd?). Feature-wise it's got almost everything you need - though can someone tell me if it over cranks or does interval recording? Without those, it's really losing out. I mentioned somewhere else that you'd have to be really desperate to have 4k to choose this over a C100 mk2 and I think that's its biggest problem - what you gain in 4K seems to be lost in IQ, DR and a couple of important features. I hope to be proved wrong in time though, as it's size and adaptability is a big plus for lots of situations.

P.S. does anyone know if you can crop the sensor down enough to put a B4 lens on it without having to use the doubler?

Is it possible to use a Metabones SB for m4/3 to Nikon/Canon/Whatever on the JVC GY-L300? If yes, that might alleviate some low-light concerns.

Not only is it possible, JVC was giving one away for free!

Until today (?).

Reminder-
If you are in LA and would like to try the camera, we (EVS) have a free one-day rental/"try to buy" program (w/deposit).....again. get it on a Friday, you don't have to return it until Monday morning.

The ef to m43 adapter JVC is giving away with the LS300 is not a speed bolster it's the live adapter only...no SB...

Cheers,

I've looked through this thread and also on product descriptions for the LS300 but I cannot find this information.

Can you record UHD from any crop-size of the sensor? For example, if used with a super-16mm lens?

From what I remember seeing at one of the presentations, Super 16mm only in HD (not UHD).

That's interesting. But UHD is possible with a M43 crop of the sensor?

I'm partly asking because I'm considering getting a Metabones Speedbooster for this camera and wondering if the BMPCC version would have any benefit.

It'd be nice if someone who lives in LA could borrow an LS300 from Mr. Martin's store for a weekend and run some tests. I'm curious to see the difference in IQ between a full-frame lens native crop, the same lens with a MB SB-M43, the same lens with a MB SB-BMCC, and the same lens with a MB SB BMPCC.
