Jvc gy-l300

Really approaching a Swiss Army knife level of functionality: lens adaptation/comm/zoom control, I/O hardware, multitude of video formats, streaming, remote control.. (even sans $$$ Zacuto);) And you would hope, with JVC's news market presence, durability.

Nice review. Thanks for sharing. It seems JVC really hit this one out of the park. Only thing yet to be confirmed is image quality. Assuming there's nothing wrong with the image this camera seems like a dream.

I agree! The camera's features are actually pretty amazing. Very versatile. I think JVC is got the right idea here. (please add a waveform!)
It's going to come down to image quality, tho.
I would love to see a comparison test with some of the other cameras in this segment.

I like everything about this camera, BUT I'm not convinced of the final image just yet. It's like JVC went all out on everything, EXCEPT the image. So far, I'm not seeing Canon or Sony quality. I'll make my final decision after seeing more footage.......

To tell the truth, the "own IP address" thing really puts me off.

I've pre-ordered the thing - a camera with those specs and a free active EF adapter for 4 grand is nearly irresistible (especially considering the mass of lenses I own) - but now I'm getting nervous that more attention was paid to making it that proverbial "Swiss Army Knife" than a solid contender in the cinema camera market (which, by the way, JVC has never claimed to be).

I have a C100 and 2 Pocket Cameras - cameras that have their strengths and weaknesses - and had hoped at first this would fill the bill - we'll see, but I am getting worried that nothing i've seen yet compares to the C100 - or even comes near the diminutive Pocket.

So far the images they throw out are not convincing. That heist video with the samurai girl does not give us confidence. Those highlights are clipping.
The tests videos showing the girl in japanese also shows this. Our business has several JVC cameras since the days of VHS and until recently the HD100 and HD200 so I'm rooting for them to make this work.
So far, what I've seen are not so nice. Color wise and dynamic range wise.

I also have used several JVC cameras (the orange ones), many years ago when I was shooting segments for a news magazine show, I always liked them. And, relative to the customer service questions, JVC has spent many years serving the broadcast industry - you don't survive there without exceptional customer service.

I do want them to make it with this camera. There's no reason, other than possibly too many diverse features, that it shouldn't go. Just don't know yet if I really want one... Oops a new post above, better look that that footage.

You know, to be fair to the DPs, I've noticed a trend in these gotta-have-a-LUT days of people over-post-producing footage, wiping out the advantages of DR, over crunching blacks and burning whites.

This last footage left the mids alone so you could see what the camera was doing - It would be interesting to see the out of camera footage of the HEIST.

That bit of footage has a ton of detail in it. I sorta wondered if the 150mbs was going to be enough for good looking UHD; it appears to be plenty. (smaller file sizes too!)

That is reportedly ungraded footage, using only in camera settings.

I am still seeing clipping, tho. Look at the fringing around pool hall lights. Looks very 'video'. Reminds me of my old JVC hm700.

I hope this is something that JVC can tame before it hits the store shelves. If they can get a handle on that, I will buy this camera in a heartbeat.

Aw hell, maybe I'll even buy 2 of 'em. I was saving up for a Sony FS7 anyway...

Yeah, I agree - sorta - having become spoiled by my $500 (special sale) Pocket Cameras I'd hoped for better. But it is comparable to the C100, I think - and is 4.2.2 50 mbps in HD which is what I need for broadcast - and it can do 4k in a pinch - given those elements I would think the color could be tweaked with something like FilmConvert (one of those damned LUTs).

Still on the fence, but I'll leave my pre-order in for another week I think.

Do Rokinons exhibit that much CA? Is it the lens or is it the camera?

I don't remember that much. But I do remember longitudinal aberration being present when I used to own the Rokinons. For what it's worth, I owned the 24, 35, and 85. I can't speak about the others.
