Jvc gy-l300

id like for once to see someone shoot a wedding with a new camera. put it through it's paces from outside to inside in low light, high gain, no gain, etc.. Jim, how big is it compared to say a C100?

Not as tall obviously....about the same size as a Canon XF100/105/200/205.....

This looks horrible. Mushy as hell and just not high quality. I know it's youtube but even youtube can do better. This camera doesn't seem to be capable of better quality than the AF100. DR looks to be about the same but Panasonic's color is better. Besides 4K it looks like it's got nothing on the AF100 and I would take the AF100 based on the footage so far. As much as I was unimpressed with the FS7 and it's video look I still bought one because it's at least very versatile and the image is high quality. This new JVC camera doesn't impress at all so far. Sorry.

makes you think if the AF100 $500 credit trade in is a scam. lol:nads:
what's worse is that my wife is now humming that idiot music in the video! haha.

Seriously though, proper tests need to be handled by proper users. don't just let these wide shots dictate the camera's quality. who knows what post workflow and render the individual is working with.

What JVC's team quickly needs to jump on is providing their own marketable slog type profiles for more dynamic range (if possible), and thus then other company's can add profiles for LS300 cinematic film emulations.

what's worse is new, professional cameras' footage being posted with stupid music by unprofessional people. damn JVC, put these cameras into professional event shooters hands and let's see what it can do!

I think you need to look at this footage for what is is......they are showing you the "re-mapping" capabilities of the camera using both EF and MFT lenses. Obviously they were not showing off the color capabilities. We were shooting all weekend and now our footage is off to the editors...

In talking with our "shooter" this morning, we've got a lot of good daylight stuff and some night...we are going to shoot more night, concentrating on 1600 & 3200 ISOs because that will be the bulk of what people will shoot at night with (3200 on a C300 is a very commonly used setting).

tbh when you put some cinema lenses to actually cover the S35 sensor it's going to look great. when I worked with the AF100 with some Schneider Xenar lenses and the nanoflash at the time it was nowhere near the optical quality or picture quality when comparing to MFT lenses and the internal AVCHD. it's just fact.

I for one, am interested in seeing some "good daylight stuff". That will reveal IQ and/or DR real fast.

The glass blowing video looks pretty good, but that was shot indoors under mostly ambient light; a scenario where clipping is rarely an issue.

On closer inspection, watch the shot where the girl is breaking the glass. (around 2:20) the highlights on her wrist look like they are clipping from the sun coming in through the window.

That's what concerns me. It reminds me of my AF100. I'd like to see some more footage in bright daylight before I make final judgement.

Come on over and I'll show you what we have.......

I meant no disrespect to you or the camera, Jim, in my last post. I am in the market for a replacement for my AF100, and the LS300 is at the top of a very short list.

But, it has to deliver the goods! I, like plenty of others on this site, are anxious to see what this camera is capable of.

By the way, I would love to stop in a check out the camera, but alas, I live in Michigan. Far from the action...

Cheers!

No problem.....I like the footage that we shot...and to try and mimic a Log setting, we used the "cinema subdued" Gamma setting that has less color...the idea being if we were going to color in post, this would be as close to "0" that we could get. On the next batch, we are planning to shoot with the standard "cinema" setting, allowing a more rec709 look. In the shot footage, we did some at the beach as the sun was going down, off to the side and behind the subjects and the camera handled it well...we had faces and didn't have to "blow out" the background (sand & ocean)......
BTW, for those who know me, I can be pretty critical on a given camera's short comings.... and people who'll focus on a camera's one particular feature (good) while ignoring the rest of the camera's "not great" features. This camera is an incredible value...for what it has and does...and the price it is being offered at......

Any interior shots coming? Available light, lit etc. Personally, would prefer seeing standard out of box settings before pseudo log/graded.

Thank you, Jim. Fire your shooter. Take the camera, go out on the street at high noon, and record the people walking.

Test shoots should always be done of people, in high-dynamic-range situations.

People. Shoot people, not landscapes or still life, because we are good at judging what people look like. From Paul Graham:

In art, the highest place has traditionally been given to paintings of people. There is something to this tradition, and not just because pictures of faces get to press buttons in our brains that other pictures don't. We are so good at looking at faces that we force anyone who draws them to work hard to satisfy us. If you draw a tree and you change the angle of a branch five degrees, no one will know. When you change the angle of someone's eye five degrees, people notice.

Retranslated into camera tests:

In camera tests, the highest place needs to be given to shots of people. There is something to this need, and not just because pictures of faces get to press buttons in our brains that other pictures don't. We are so good at looking at faces that we force any camera that records them to work hard to satisfy us. If you shoot a tree and you change the colors five degrees, no one will know. When you change the colors of someone's face five degrees, people notice.

High Dynamic Range. Cameras these days can look just like each other under controlled circumstances. It's in broad daylight that their flaws are shown.
