Jvc gy-l300

4K is so overhyped in all forms that I have lost much interest in it. In my opinion the best thing so far is Panasonic's consumer level HDR function for its 2015 semi pro level line up. You've got quality Full HD wrapped in a small cam with wifi control, a proper set of lighting gear, 120fps Full HD or its interval twixtor style algorithm for 240fps at Full HD. I mean people seem to forget these practical things instead of running through post and processing. If there was a hack for AVC-Intra on these little Panny cams it would kill everything including DSLRs that are really meant for photographers. just saying...and let's save money

Let's hope you're right, Jim. I see that BH has the cam listed at $3995. I certainly hope this reduced price point isn't a marketing compromise stemming from a poor performing sensor!
Price point is where it should be ($3995). JVC also pushed the release date to NAB 2015. Prior 3 months, they stated March as release date. I'm believing it has to do with getting everything in order (releasing with all fixes)!

do realize there are terms like medical, military, and space applications....
Yes, but this was shown at CP+, so it's actually video geared. (although, it's likely a proof of concept only)

For military, there's a 16K/133 MPX sensor out too.

companies always promo random new technology at expos. I don't know what's your point. High megapixel sensors have been around for a while, and in most cases for private use the public won't even know the manufacturing of it, AND in other cases only a handful would be produced.

Let me remind you as a professional in video a good Full HD camera is just as effective as a 4K cam. Why? Because of overall playback probability. If you're making 4K projects for TV then I assume it's being sold to said Company or Network or even Net. From the images of this JVC GY-L300 I can get beautiful 4K 25p off a Hero4 Black in ProTune....for $500. Of course they're different cameras and the JVC has better ergonomic and standard features, but the video so far is rubbish considering it's coming from CVP.

Not true on the push of the date.....cameras should be shipping 3rd week of March or so.....some really killer promos are coming with it and once I get the go-ahead, I'll post it.

The point is that there's more difference between HD and 4K than between 16mm and 35mm film ... and I don't see any director asserting that he'd be just as happy to shoot in 16mm when he can shoot in 35mm. In fact, directors and cinematographers want to go bigger to Vista Vision or 65mm, if they have the budget for it. No one ever advocates the return for the hand-cranked cameras either. The technological progress always points one way and one way only - forward.

Based on one of the largest dealers on the east coast, They have it posted as: "Expected Availability Beginning of April 2015"......If it's coming sooner, great!Beginning of April 2015"

but let me put some reality perspective back into play. I love to talk about film and broadcast theory or what the bigger names would or want to do, but since I'm a working professional I prefer to talk for what's practical and more realistic. My opinions are based within the JVC GY-L300 thread and the sample video that was provided. I work with Alexa and Red on a monthly basis... I also do consulting for many agencies and production companies that create ads and as you know you'll find intermixed cameras from GoPros to DSLRs to Alexa etc... I am telling YOU, the new semi pro cameras that Panasonic just released with 4K like the 870 model has amazing 120fps Full HD (even 240fps) and with a good colorist it could top any 60K + cam for the many ads found on Youtube since nobody bothers opening a commercial in Full screen mode... The 870 model is just 900 bucks and still employs beautiful Full HD. The JVC GY-L300 is about 4grand PLUS you need to invest in lenses. Am I making myself clear?

Anybody know what sort of customer service we can expect from JVC?
Specifically, will there be updates to look forward to? Will they be free or will they charge for minor changes, like Panasonic did with the AF100?
I hope they go the Samsung NX1 route and offer some very usable updates/upgrades.
I'd love to see the camera eventually record in actual 4k, not just UHD; and possibly at higher bit-rates. (the sensor is reportedly capable of 4512 x 3008 at up to 50fps)

JVC's actually consistent with firmware updates in the last 5 years. Usually a combination of fixes and added benefits to make up for design. I wouldn't be surprised to see revisions in this cam.

Wow. Is the offer valid for international purchases? Looking at that PL mount offer! Any news or rumors for JVC to add Anamorphic support to their firmware. Could be a camera to steal the show. Also I've read this sensor can calibrate for 16mm PL lenses?

I've read this sensor can calibrate for 16mm PL lenses?

From what I've read, yes. It would be a rectangle of about 2K. 16mm is normally 10.26 x 7.41 mm, which makes a diagonal of 12.7mm. So lenses made for 16mm should cover at least 12.7mm.

Here's the icing on the cake that some people overlook: That lens will cover any rectangle as long as it has a diagonal of 12.7mm. The original 16mm format wasn't 16:9, it was 4:3. So if you can make it little wider, and a little shorter, while keeping the 12.7mm diagonal. I have done the math for you: A sensor whose diagonal is 12.7mm and whose aspect ratio is 16:9 would be 11.07 x 6.23. JVC has said you can dial in custom dimensions. Let's assume for a moment that you could dial in exactly this rectangle.

How many pixels fit in 11.07 mm? Well, the sensor's pixels are 5.2 microns. So, 11.07 divided by 0.0052 is 2,129. So it would be 2.129K. A Super16 window of the sensor would of course be even more K.

On international, the deal is just for a few Select US dealers who cannot ship out-of-country....but that does not stop someone from abroad to walk in and buy it.

Jim, any idea how long JVC's promo is supposed to last?
I would definitely like to see more footage and reviews before pulling the trigger.
If the LS300's image quality is good, this would be a very sweet deal!

I have conflicting info on when this program will end.....as soon as I get this clarified, I'll post it. The cameras should arrive here by the end of March. I should have a production-run camera 1 week before our LA Debut event on March 18th.
