"The only setback I can see here is that it's not a full 4k image with MFT lenses but rather something in the 3.5K range before Debayering. From the market perspective, the sensor should have been around 13 MPX and the MFT lens crop would be the market norm."
I think there's a misunderstanding here.
You can use FF and APC-s with MFT mounts on this camera without incurring a crop. And you can use MFT lenses, but with cropping.
That's the beauty of this camera. Whether or not the image from the sensor is any good; that's another story.

No misunderstanding. One loses some/all auto features on the FF/APS-C lenses via the adapters. It may be irrelevant to some, it may not be to others and it may damage it in this market niche because there will be cameras with full auto features and 4K, if not with the same s35 imager.

PS. Watching the US Stream now ... kind of a lame presentation ... are people really going to spend $5,000 on a webcam?

PPS. IMO, the image coming off this camera is good enough and a low/no budget film won't be deprived of quality from its use. Of course, for about the same price, A7s+Shogun perform even better and the sub-$5,000 4K market is going to get a lot more competitive by this summer.

"One loses some/all auto features on the FF/APS-C lenses via the adapters."
Actually, the cinema lenses I was referring to don't require adapters and have no auto features anyway. I agree though, at this price point some people are probably going to want 'auto' features.
On the other hand, there are plenty of customers whose workflows are not compatible with DSLRs. They might require a camera with ND filters, XLR inputs with phantom power, etc... That would be this camera. (or the good ol' AF100)
IMHO- Having to rig up a DSLR for cinema always seemed like adding a sidecar and a trailer to a motorcycle, to make it as practical a car. The original cost and nimbleness of the bike are negated. Shoulda just bought a car...

You are right. Of course some of the competitors cinema cameras have NDs, XLRs and
so on and auto functions as well so it's not like your choice is this camera (or good ol' AF100) or
a DSLR. Lots of good ones out there, hopefully this will be another fine choice.

I hear ya. As you recall, there's been a fairly long discussion on the "AF-200" and its possible iterations on the Panasonic forum. DSLR rigging isn't always comfortable but, on the other hand, folks have shot high end TV with 1D C and C500, which are kind of tweeners to begin with, shoulder mounted style and many rig even C300 so much that it looks like a DSLR + every needed accessory.

Discussing L300, I would look at the $4,500 range and consider all the available options. Right now, A7s+Shogun appears a winner in that class. The rigged up DSLR/DSLM solution - for example, Samsung NX1 based - would be even lower priced but may not be worth the hassle to many. (unless they already own the lenses and the accessories)

Then there are your lower priced 4K or 2K camcorders that lack this or that feature, etc.

As a side note, most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between ~ 3.5K or 4K anyway. I've long been skeptical of the inability to tell between 1080p and 4K but a slight MFT crop and pixel loss shouldn't be a big deal on this particular camera.

Well... Not sure what to say. A little "fringing" and blown highlights seem evident, although perhaps some of it was overexposed. Jury is still out for me, and I really want to like this cam.
Totally agree with you. I too am looking for more footage in different environments. Would like to see some fast and slow panning, etc..........

Ditto! Was hoping this would be the replacement for my AF100. Other than resolution, I don't see a big difference in image quality compared to the Panasonic. In my eyes, the JVC looks kinda 'video-y'.
Maybe in the hands of a 'pro', the ls300 can be made to really shine. Sorta surprised that JVC hasn't already commissioned someone to do a proper demo reel for this camera.

To date, all the footage that is out there is from true prototypes....wait for actual production run/final cameras before you try to pass judgement. I'm looking forward to have a production run camera in my hands so we can really see what this camera's DNA rally is...more in the Canon & Panasonic direction or in the Sony & RED direction.

Agreed. But this camera is due on store shelves in a month or so. Don't you think the IQ should pretty much be dialed in by now? The way it looks, the ls300's 'DNA' is more in the direction of a convenience store security cam.
I hope all the detractors are wrong (including myself!), 'cuz I will be first in line to buy this camera if the image is at least better than my AF100. And that's not exactly a tall hurdle these days...

Ha! Convenience store security cam line pulled a chuckle out of me! Actually I agree with your assessment especially since this camera will be available within a few short weeks. I truly like the on-paper specs, and am quite tempted to stick one in a shopping cart, but the IQ samples are so AF100-like in terms of blown highlights that I can't see shelling out $4500 for it unless better samples and/or an independent test of DR show something far better than the AF's performance. I refuse to go back to getting kicked in the teeth by those zebras again!

I hope we are all wrong! I had the same feelings with the X70 and it's horrible highlights but now there are good settings all around and very nice videos. If the LS300 has good picture profiles with ample settings or a log mode it should get much better results in no time.

This could be the perfect camera for events, news and shorts I've been waiting for, but I'll have to sit and see what happens. C'mon JVC!

Yes, They should have it dialed in but there have been none of the production run cameras out there.....ALL footage that is out there is from those original prototype cameras....I'm told that some of the final cameras will be out by the end of the month so JVC can have some real pros put the camera through it's paces and shoot their Promo pieces............and yes, it will be better than your 5 year old technology AF100.

Let's hope you're right, Jim. I see that BH has the cam listed at $3995. I certainly hope this reduced price point isn't a marketing compromise stemming from a poor performing sensor!
