FS7: Just want to take a moment to appreciate the reliability of the FS7

So im shooting a documentary, and when i get back home i see that my Sony a7S + Odyssey 7Q+ UHDtoHD recordings from a 4K rated HDMI cable are full of weird image shifting artifacts and they all have a green line up top. And for some reason the audio drops out on the same places in Premiere Pro as well, but not in Quicktime, so i know the audio is there.

Luckily the footage was not that important, and contained no important scenes to the story of the film. Just beautified photos and scenes.

But things like this make me truly appreciate the compact, reliable, internal recording workhorse that the FS7 really is. How about you? Still happy with your FS7 in situations that demands a camera that "just works"?

Weird thing is, this scene is the only scene that has these issues. A recording taken at the same place with the same cable with the same setup and the same framing just 10 minutes after this footage, is flawless.

That almost looks like a reflection off of a filter in a mattebox.

But that only explains it if you were using one.

Yeah no, its just this single frame. The frame before and after is fine.

But theres also some weird flicker issues in the next 3-5 seconds. Its like a light bulb going on, and then the light is flickering afterwards. But theres only candlelight in the scene.

Well... I had few issues with FS7 as well so there is no rule. ALWAYS use catalyst browse/prepare to offload footage from your cards, since then I get errors very rarely.

Don't want to jinx it, but my several Sony cameras have been very reliable.

I wonder if you issues stem from using a recorder?

Yes, thats what im 99% sure of too ;-) Thats why im taking my time to appreciate the FS7 with its great internal codecs, that does not need external recorder.

I had some weird artefacts recording to the Odyssey. I put it down to a dodgy connection. Though, thinking about it, it could have been aliens...

Any cell or radio tower nearby? The only time my FS7 and Atomos Shogun act peculiar is when I test the rig in the parking lot. Across the road is a 50kw FM broadcast tower, plus AM and cellular sites.

BTW, nice "Barry Lyndon" effect.

This reminds me of some footage I had with the F3 and a Samurai recorder . It only happened in one room during a CEO quarterly report but it happened twice in the same room 3 months apart. Intermittent jumping and ghost images every few seconds but sometimes minutes apart. Drove me crazy. Tried to replicate it again and again in the same room beforehand, after , and in different rooms, different drives, cameras etc- but could not do it . It only happened while the CEO was talking. I sent the footage to Atomos and they couldn't figure it out either. I tried to replicate it at home with the worst cables I could possible rig up and that had no effect. We thought maybe it had something to do with a motion sensor but that was a wild guess.
Later we switched to a PIX recorder and it didn't happen again , but when using the PIX we double;e recorded with the Samurai and that was also OK. It made me wary of Atomos but I have no idea if that was justified.

Im suspicious about this as well.

Lockport HDMI connection with 4K rated HDMI cable.

Though i did not touch the cable, and all the footage shot right after this is perfectly fine. Its like the recorder bugged up when i pressed record, and un-bugged when i stopped the recording. Super-weird.

@basspig

Thanks, my inspiration exactly! These girls live on norwegian mountain farms for two months each summer. And they live like they have lived for centuries: candle light and cow milk products.

Hi Martin,

I know you reported a different issue in another thread and you noted that you recently acquired your Odyssey7Q+. I wonder if the events are related. May I ask what firmware you are running on the Odyssey7Q+? This is indicated in the center of the Upper Toolbar, just under the Safe Eject button. The current firmware is 2016.06, which should read as 16.06 in this display. I ask because you note playback issues and some other problems associated with older firmware than has since been corrected by updates. You also indicate that the Odyssey7Q+ came with a free SSD included, which is something we have not done for some time, indicating that this unit may have been sitting in dealer inventory for several months.

That's why I love this forum. Mitch will get you back on track!

So if i upgrade the firmware, i will no longer have destroyed HD recordings in the future?

If thats true, how can you as a company let such a firmware through quality control anyway?
