Just speculating...

Having had the HVX200 pretty much since it was launched I was thinking the other day about when I would be upgrading.

Is there any general consensus as to when the HVX will be upgraded? I've seen the HPX and it looks good with a host of improvement i.e. a 'proper' firewire connection ;) but in too many respects it would be a retrograde step over the HVX.

care to develop on the "retrograde step" bit? I'm looking at one of those myself...

I´ve debated this the last weeks, because I really like the sharp look of the EX1, but have decided (on a personal basis) that since my clients are happy with the HVXs picture, I´m happy too:)

The nerd in me always wants the newest and hottest stuff, but from a business point of view a new investment is only justified if it is needed to keep your customers happy or to attract new ones, you can´t get with your "old stuff".
The HVX already gave me better SD and HD when needed, all with great image quality, my next cam really must be a MAJOR improvement to the HVX.
I rather invest in light and sound or postpro stuff right now and keep my fingers crossed for the "next breakthrough" (maybe a 1/2" or 2/3" full raster 1080 camera with SD option, with AVCHDintra recording at 50mbs...)

All the best,

Spart

The only features that appear to missing from the HPX170 is the tape mechanism, and a different lens.

What other things do you see as missing?

Yeah, not sure at all what would be "retrograde" about it, except that it's smaller. (And I think smaller is nice.)
