7D Just shot a 29 minute continuous Clip?

Trying to figure out if something weird is going on with my new 7D,
I have a SanDisk Extreme 60mb/s 16gb card and just recorded a 29'59" continuous clip at 1920x1080 at 24fps. The clip size was around 3.9GB, everything about this seems impossible because everyone has said the camera can only record for 12 minutes at a time?
Any ideas what this could mean? Is this a faulty camera?
My firmware is 1.2.1 and I just got the camera last week from B&H

Also, My buddy got a 7D the same time I did from B&H, he was shooting yesterday and got the 'can't access card message' with a SanDisk 30mb/s 16gb card on three different cards. He lost those clips. Today we were troubleshooting and letting our cameras run to try and recreate the problem, but could not get that same message again, however, his camera began to record well in the 20 min and up range at 1920x1080. I took the cards that he had in his camera, reformatted them in my camera and let it record for as long as possible and the 30mb/s 16gb card stops around 13 minutes while my 60mb/s 16gb card will record up to 29'59''

any ideas if this is correct?
thanks!

ideas? thoughts?
thanks!

Someone else is going to chime in with a more technically exact answer, but I've found I can record longer times with my T2i when I'm recording an unvarying image. I think it has something to do with the varying pixels, like the camera notes more about the variations between frames. So if you record a blank white wall you might be able to record longer since there is less variation and thus less data. However, if you're recording an actual scene you'll see it holds to the usual ~12 minutes.

What does the video look like? I can't imagine a 3.9GB clip going for that long unless you left the lens cap on.

it was with the lens cap on, just trying to fill up the card and it was 1920x1080, never thought the actual image would affect the recording time?

The maximum video file size is 4GB not record duration. This is the limitation of the FAT32 file system of the CF memory card.

The limit isn't 12 minutes. It's 4GB, which averages at 12 minutes. Since AVCHD is not raw it doesn't record every pixel; solid color means all repeats, which can be compressed easily, and no movement means no description of changing frames.

:violin:

So you record footage with a lens cap on? Very interesting, also waste of a thread. Next time record some real footage and report back.

just testing out cards to see if i got an error message that my buddy got on his, you didn't have to click on the thread if you didnt wanna offer any advice

When I saw your heading on this thread I knew immediately and was going to answer without even reading through the comments that you had recorded a very low detailed image. If you simple took the cap off and shot the wall with a little light you would see a difference in time, even with that. This is the most pointless thread I've seen so far... and funny. Thanks for sharing!

Why don't you do a thread on how long you can get your battery to last .....with the camera off.

Just all good jokes man. I'm sure you meant well.

so in the end the camera has no record limit set as far as time but in memory size. its not which ever comes first, 4GB or 12 minutes, its 4GB regardless of what you shoot, now the back of the Lense Cap obviously have 0 light and little detail so it would take 30 minutes to record 4GB of DETAIL. AT LEAST we know the Battery will last 30 minutes while on record, recording very little. ......

Thread Closed....

I got about 19 minutes during a July 3rd fireworks display on my T2i. The VBR plays nice with Black and township fireworks have lots of black spaces.
