Just Rig Pics! Let's See Em

What material is that homemade handle? Did you CNC it yourself?

I got it machined from someone when I tried a wierd rig setup involving a monopod.
It is made out of aluminium.

The hole size is a tad more wide then 15mm, but the screw tight it enough, it doesn't even move.

dmpsk8, how are you attaching the Sockloupe to the GH1? I have one but have not found it useful so far. I would like to attach it, as you have, with the LCD in place rather than swung out. For me, the loupe has been useless when the LCD is open. It never stays in place. Mine did not come with those ties you have in your pic.

I think I got everything, man I wish you could monitor gh1 footage when recording...

Of course I never really use all these at the same time, but I might need to one day!

Nice rig dmpsk8, where did you get that focus lever on your niks? That would go immensely well on my diy run and gun solution.

They are actually just two zip ties. The "handle" part is folded over on itself with heat-shrink cable wrap over it. I can pop them off if i want to and they are ridiculously cheap. I put one on each of my lenses so I don't have to move them back and forth.

@Ron Rodenmeyer

This is the brand new sock loupe for the GH1. My order actually got delayed so i could get the new one. With the LCD swung out, it can be rather annoying. They recommend you use it while LCD's closed. I've been trying to come up with some little support to keep it in place while the LCD is open, I'll let you know if i find anything.

FYI, did some quick GH1 testing last week: http://vimeo.com/9514123

Thanks, Dmpsk8. I guess I just got in too soon with my Sockloupe purchase! I may have to try to do some aftermarket work to add some similar straps that would allow it to be lashed to the body. My problem is the thing just shifts around too much and collapses in on itself.

My compact GH1 rig (sorry crappy iPhone pic, but my camera is in the shot!)

I like to keep it simple.

Since my paid gigs are weddings, the only thing I normally put on my camera is a rubber lens hood on the 20mm to keep my fingers off of the glass when not using the kit lens.

Sometimes I mount a TL-50 light for certain parts of the reception.

I got an inexpensive Azden stereo/shotgun that sounds great, but it of course requires a 2.5mm adapter...which makes the connection unreliable...so I don't use it for paid gigs.

I have a Hoodman LCD hood for shooting outdoors.

I've got an adapter to use my Olympus OM lenses...but the only one I use on the GH1 is a 50mm, and if I get the Panasonic 45mm f2.8 then I'll eBay the adapter and quit using manual lenses altogether. They're a PITA for wedding work.

I've got a FaderND...but again...I never use it for weddings. I don't require shallow DOF for weddings...and unless shooting outdoors, I usually need as much light as I can scrap up.

And of course...a tripod...I never shoot paid gigs without a tripod. Shakey video irritates the heck out of me. ;)

This is my rig picture taken with my wife's iphone. It is not visible, but my dFocus is on the other side.

dmpsk8, that is the cinecity shoulder rig, correct? How effective is that counter weight?

I use so many different rigs in so many different configs depending on the situation...I will take pics of some of them.

Primary rig I use. For events I sometimes flip the handles around and put the rear rails on my shoulder. But I use the rig for most handheld narrative filmmaking stuff too, and often the GH1 is on this on the tripod. I usually don't have the Zoom on there for the narrative filmmaking stuff, because I sometimes will mount a follow focus (I don't own one though) and the boom guy carries the audio recorder in that situation.

Here is the same rig without the røde mic for a better view:

Here is the rig I use whenever I can, but in public it's a bit too intense looking (gun like) so it usually only gets used on closed sets which is a bummer because it's so light and versatile that I usually would rather use it out and about. I am thinking of painting the whole thing white or orange or some other color that would allow me to use it in public...but seriously...a bit too gun-like. I was filming with the EX1 on this rig in the woods the other day (yeah, you heard me) and some people wandered through and put their hands up and freaked out for a second...no joke. Oh yeah, I built it myself.

And here is some random rig configuration with my external monitor which is pretty useless on the GH1 :D I use the monitor fairly often for checking takes on set and for showing the director whats up when I have my camera worked into a hard to reach spot and don't want to take it out, but have yet to really use this rig extensively...it's more for if I'm using a 5D.
