just received A1

got it at broadway photo for 2600, but added 4yr warranty two 8hr tapes, aluminum case and tripod= 3600, good price?? i hope so, b/c i dont have a business, its mainly for fun filming snowboarding and making skate edits, i want to do some wedding videos b/c i do all of my families and i enjoy it.

actually the tapes they gave me are the BP945, in the user guide it says these are the 4 hr tapes, is that correct? i plan on calling tomorrow and just saying i didnt receive the 8 hr tapes and not mentioning the 4 hr to see if i can keep them. i will def raise hell over the tapes b/c that is the only reason i went up in price b/c it was cheaper than buying them seperate from them and he hooked up the 2day air free shipping.

but let a virgin know whats up, any help/info would be appreciated,
thanks.

Can you post a picture of the tapes. I've never heard of an 8 or even a 4hr miniDV tape.

Well Broadway Photo is a scam shop and the aluminum case and tripod you got with it is probably garbage. Maybe you could post a picture so we can see the "accessories" you go with it? I wouldn't trust using any of that stuff on my A1 as it's usually of sub-par quality. Your warranty also might not be valid..it's likely a grey market camera. Call Canon and double check.

EDIT: I just saw the price you paid - in all honesty, go to a legitimate store like B&H and you'll get the camera for around $3400. It'll be brand new, w/ warranty and you won't have useless accessories. Then with a couple hundred more you can buy yourself an extra 6 or 8 hour battery. I'd return it if you can and purchase from a legitimate dealer.

Yup, that store is a scam shop, all the accessories are junk, the warranty is bogus and you'll be lucky to get a working camera. Call and cancel your order NOW! Then call your credit card company because these crooks will try to charge you anyway. Then order from a reputable place like B&H for $3400, take that $200 saving and put it toward some real accessories.

Stay Away.

There is no such thing as 4 hour tape. That designation you gave sounds like the battery type.

well the camera works, and i pretty much filmed all day today,
yes, i meant to say 4 hr battery

the aluminum briefcase and tripod are quite heavy, ill hook up pics tomorrow.

Im glad you got your cam and your enjoying it. Just be aware that you most likely do not have a warranty. My A1 has never so much as hiccuped so Im hoping yours is the same.

well i just setup the warranty with repair tech, and they say everything is good. like if something goes wrong, call them up, and they will let best buy know that i will be coming in, and noel, i hope mine doesnt hiccup as yours hassnt, i will just baby it like i do my ride.

i have the pics of the stuff
hit me up on aim: rollinfive0w

Best Buy? Best Buy can't service something like the A1. I'm not being a jerk or anything, but there's no way Best Buy repair technicians know much about prosumer camcorders. Which repair tech did you set it up with? Canon's?

Hopefully you never need to use the warranty though!

-Kegan

I used to work at Best Buy. No one would ever send a customer with a Canon XH-A1 purchased somewhere else to a Best Buy for service. Camera service was outsourced at Best Buy to a terribly slow company called Precision Camera.

I think Repair Tech is pulling your leg on that one. Maybe you're sent by Broadway Video to trick us into finding them reputable.

Oh man, that's not a good sign. I really hope your camera works fine. There's no way Best Buy will be able to service the A1. You need to call Canon ASAP, give them your camera' serial # and make sure that you have a manufacturer's warranty. When my camera had a problem, I did a thorough search for every companies that are capable of servicing the camera. All of the ones I found either do not do complex camera repairs, or they send the camera away to Canon to be fixed anyway. The two Canon service centers in the US are the ONLY two places where you'll be able to get your camera fixed and expect to get it back in a timely manner.

ok, i have no idea where to go, i was just guessing, the company is called RepairTech. yah, i hope i never have to use them

RepairTech? Man, I'd definitely call Canon to check your serial #. It all sounds fishy to me. I know you sort of expected tips on using your new A1, but this is the biggest and most important one!

You've already made the purchase and have started to use the camera...great, but consider yourself having no warranty until you've confirmed with Canon, regardless of what these guys say.

They have a 1.81 out of 10 review by MANY buyers - it's like that for a reason. Think about it

-Kegan

wrd, canon says the serial # is legit, the warranty is straight also. 1 yr w/ them, and then repairtech takes over. the canon lady says repairtech will contact canon as to when and where if needs be to send the cam in for service

It's listed in the manual in the accessories section, I believe. Don't have it handy at the moment though..

yah, i read and it is near 4 hrs for max recording time, typical recording time is 2.5hrs.. i called the place where i bought them and they said it is really 8 hrs. what is the # of your longest bat and how much did you pay for it?

The A1 comes with a Canon BP-950G battery in the box that lasts for nearly six hours. I bought an Impact BP970 battery that lasts about seven hours for $100.

I'm sorry to say rollinfiveOw but you're just now discovering what happened when you buy from a place like Broadway Photo. The BP945 is a 4 hour battery and I think you'll soon find that the tripod, filters and whatever else they thrown in are really just cheap junk. But at least you got a working camera with warranty, so you're a lot luckier than most other people. Of course this also meant that the box was already opened and they removed the stock battery and gave you a crappier one.
