i just picked up the 7d today, i plan on getting the juiced xlr tripod mount adapter that has the 3.5mm pin for the mic input on the 7d, and also going to get a few other things for it, so it will be my cam for the next little bit...until i get my hands on a sony ex1r...i plan on purchasing one of those by april or may...so i will have the canon 7d as my backup, and alternate camcorder/camera...
anyway here are the pics of it fresh outta the box....

also i had to take the first one back because it was making a really terrible sound, like a sizzly weird sound....here is a video i took with it before i exchange it out....you can hear the internal mic picking up the sound...what is it??

also how do i turn off the auto adjustment for sound levels?

Your first one was one of the few models that came with a bacon cooker! I can't believe you sent it back. There were only 100 made!

You don't.
You either have to buy one of the beachtek or juicedlink adapters that "trick" the camera to defeat it, or wait till Canon has a firmware update that allows the ACG to be turned off.

Best bet, and what most people do, is go two system and get an external audio recorder.

will canon listen to people like me who register and answer the question of what we dont like, and telling them to remove that stupid feature?

can firmware actually fix this? or is it a hardware issue?

what xlr input is the best and will bolt under cam, and let tripod under that, and takes a batter? i want one that when i plug my xlr mic into it, the audio goes to the cam's mic input in sync, so the cam pics it up instead of the onboard mono mic...
i found juicelink but are they the only ones?

also what is the difference between a EF 18-135mm IS lens and the 15-85mm lense? i currently have the 18-135mm, i read about the fact that the 15-85mm lense on the 7d is equal to the 24-146mm on a full fram camera, what does this mean and should i get this lense?

I registered with Canon and complained nicely about the gain issue with the 7D. I got an automated response. Let's hope after the 5D firmware we get a 7D update to give us these things as well.

The Beachtek DXA-5D is a popular alternative to JuicedLink.

The 15-85mm gives you a wider angle on the short end and long end. It also has an Ultrasonic Motor, which allows for fast and quiet autofocus but is irrelevant for video. And it has better optics and is much more expensive than the 18-135mm.

It means nothing if you aren't familiar 35mm still photography, 35mm DOF adapters, and/or full-frame cameras such as the 5D Mark II.

ic...does the beachtek send audio to the 7d, and then the 7d records it with the video just like a camcorder right?

Yes. I own the Beachtek. The Beachtek also allows you to turn on a high frequency component that is a hack to turn off the automatic gain in the 7D (and 5D).

Then you can filter out that sound in post. Not perfect, but works better than straight recording and the stupid AGC circuitry.

if its 20khz thats not audible, i have a recording studio/sound lab, so i can just runa sweep over 16khz to remove?

can i use both channels? this is the beachtek dxa-slr right? cause it has the preamps....

can you upload a sample of video with sound using the beachtek? starting quiet and then getting louder?

green lantern says they are working on a firmware, 5dmk2 AGC is disabled finally..

whats the best body tripod/support for this camera, and matte box?

i am going to spend 50 bucks at bhphotovideo for the shotgun mic holder that slides into top connector as well..

Very true, well, to most people, I am sure someone can hear that who are younger, but for what we care about a notch filter will pop that out.

Yes, you can use both channels. I will try to put something together this weekend but I am SLAMMED at the moment so I might not get to it.

I've been waiting on the Magic Lantern stuff, but have not seen any real new on 7D progress in awhile. Canon is rumored to release a new 5D update March 17th or something with controls an VU for audio. There is hope they do this for the 7D as well which will not required the Magic Lantern or beachtek function.

Best tripod/support you will get 5000 answers. I bought the Velbon DV-7000 tripod and am very happy with it.

I do not use a Matte box, no need. I use the lens hoods that came with them and screw on filters (Caprock 2.0, FaderND) so it was a pointless expendature for me.

I do everything with a second operator and a boom mic. That way, I can point my camera at diferent things, or dolly, or whatever, and keep consistent sound. However, if you are shooting solo, I can totally see the need for a shotgun mic holder on the camera. MAKE SURE it has shock mounts or movement in the camera will cause noise in the mic (transfered through the body, mostly low frequency)

i saw the juicelink video and the guy said sound goes into left channel and you can hear it? beachtek must be different right?

i am wondering if i can record 2 xlr mics in stereo with agc disabler on, then just filter the right channel with a lowpass eq at 16khz, or is it so audible it has to be removed?

i also wonder why the video is really shaky, its so hard to have the video stable....does the stabilizer on the lense work for video too?

if its 20khz thats not audible

You have no idea how much it bothers me when someone says this. As I have perfect hearing yes there is more sound which can be heard and more specifically felt. Read that link and dig some more and you will see your statement is simply not correct.

Now will most people tell the difference or care, probably not but the same could be said for video and resolutions past a certain point.

Trust me, there is a difference
