"just like you"

I don't know if anyone has said this, but the whole feeling behind the video reminds be slightly of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Absolutely amazing video. I didn't notice anyone asking about the lighting. What types of lights did you use for this project? Did you do all of the lighting? If so - you're freakin awesome. The whole thing is great!

I'm just getting started with video. I just bought my first DVX. I haven't had any chance to use it yet unfortunately. No one around me is interested in this stuff. Oh well.

Great stuff. So how 'bout them lights? Thanks for the great video!

This is a very old thread, but I'd like to say. This is the video that sold me on getting a dvx. I was an occasional surfer last year, and after I saw this I was like. Holy ****. Just so you know. :)

Rich- Just wanted to say thanks for taking your time to post here. It's been very informational and helpful. Appreciate you being so forward and sincere with your posts. There are a lot of people wanting to learn and you are helping us.

cool, thanks again guys...glad some of you have been inspired to do better things because of it.

Pen Cap Chew - we fully intended to have make up done with scars and stitches...but we were running out of time and the makeup person was slow, and it just wasnt looking that good anyway...so i opted to go for beauty makeup instead...just one of those things that you have to compromise with on the day...im happy with how it turned out though.

Adam Crabbe - budget was 7k.

Very cool video. Very impressed and inspired it came from a DVX.

Always interested in hearing the budget - but more importantly, what did you have to spend the money on? Location? Crew? Lighting/Grip rentals?

Still, looks like a million dollar video.

McDermitt is going to be awhile...

Yeah for those un aware.. and I am not letting the cat out of the bag since this info is on his site, Matt signed with HSI which is pretty much the biggest music video production company there is and his first video with them is for Backstreet Boys so... doubt you will see any XL2 stuff coming from him, although there are two very strong XL2 pieces on his old company site from his partners www.digitalinterference.net that "Moving to the City" video looks fantastic.

Screw the performance aspect. I wouldn't change a thing. Seriously Tizzy, how would a performance section improve this video? I think far to many videos throw in the performance part, just because they think its obligitory, or because the band needs the ego stroked. My music video philosophy is to never include performance unless it provides a narrative or asthetic angle. I.E. The performance is part of the concept. (Red Hot Chile Peppers - Otherside, Offspring - Get a Job, White Stripes - Hardest Button to Button) Any video that cuts between A roll (performance) and B roll (story) without a certain cohesivness between the two is mearly an exercise in mediocre, typical MTV video. A video on the level of this one (Just Like You), should never be brought down to common denometer.

Seejay good philosiphy, and I must say I agree but perhaps you missed where he mentioned already potetial managers and labels were concerned by the lack of performance since the video is a debut of a band and not a singular artist. I think the video is fine as is, but that if the issue is pushed by a new label performance could be worked in.

I say this because i work as a music video director and the company I am with works with the likes of labels such as Univeral among others. Some of these labels actually have stipulations such as "The video must consist of no less then 65% performance from the band" and you know what, they will pay someone to watch the video, keep track and do the math. If it does not meet that percentage they demand changes. Not all do this but some do. It is getting a bit antiquated at this point, and frankly it is why I love the rock genre. Some bands don't even care if they are in the video, "Just make a video that makes us look cool!" I love that, complete creative freedom; but when you are working for a label and one that is currently giving you repeat business but can end that if you don't give them what they want.. you do what you can to make them happy.

i think this has been anounced in like 4 other threads.

regarding XL2...if you look at the original post that BrandonC was responding to you will see that it was in regards to a video that strancali was talking about in which Matt was using an XL2...you have to also take into account that that post by BrandonC was made in january....this thread is hella old...just fyi...:cheesy:

thanks for you input regarding the performance stuff. but we felt that it was best to not include performance. we had talked about doing it, but in the end the band thought it was better to leave it alone. videos been in the bag for almost a year now.

peace!

rumor has it matt is re-shooting free your mind on the hvx! he told me this over a month ago in an email when it was still working. that should be awesome but who knows if its happening

Dag!!!! That is mad sick son! That would def. be something I would see on TV or something. It seriously looks like film. I wouldn't of guessed it was the DVX. Sweet man, keep it up.

Rich, you know I'm sure I posted in this thread aaaagggeeesss ago when I first joined. Just watched it again. Man it still stands up, nice redit...When you gonna do another??? 25pages man, I think that says it all. Still best looking for my bucks.

Tizzy, just comming into that problem myself with a major label, I want to earn so I'm past the madonna stage.

while I am in love with the DVX, I had no idea that footage this clean and stunning could be acheived. You are not only an artist but a pro as a DP!
How did you output? Compression used?

I was unaware how old that was.. and yes that info has poped up a few times, just though i would put it out there for any still not in the loop.

I also hope you did not misinterperet my intent with the performance aspect. I think the video needs exactly zero changes. It is Hella strong man, I just know how the "oerformance" dance with labels can go but as long as the band sticks with what you have got there should be no problems. Coming into a label they should be able to dictate such things.

Your work is amazing,m did you already mention what you used for CC and if you did it yourself? Just curious as my boss was very impressed with that among othert things. You really should have no problem getting gigs as a director with this iece though. Look forward to seeing your stuff on the music channels.

cool dude...the CC was just a little magic bullet action. nothin too, crazy made a custom look using it and applied it to most of the shots. i would also do a little levels adjust to the clips to bring out highlights. in all it was pretty simple.

i keep saying i want to do a thorough writeup on how i did some of the vfx not in just this piece but other things too, there are some shots in there that people are not aware are vfx and when i tell them they go "what!?"...anyway, just dont have time...

I'm jumping on the "wow" bandwagon too. Cool concept. Great work. Is it still in progress? Is the version on your site the latest? I ask because the ONLY thing about the video that gives me pause are the visible matte edges. I probably wouldn't have even noticed, except that I've been staring at just that very thing for the last two weeks, trying to pull good keys and draw nice mattes on less than stellar DV footage, unlike your stuff, which looks awesome. That video is so freaking cool, I'm offering to spiff up those composites if you have any interest in revisiting the piece.
