two questions

One, biggest noob question. Where is the plug to transport to the computer. Is it DV or what

and can someone explain timelines to me, they seem very confusing. I really like how 30p looks so can you focus around that? thanks

The plug is on the right side below the onboard mic... under the hood. It is a firewire plug and will transfer the data in a raw dv25 format to the computer.

Yes... DV.

What NLE are you using? Can't talk timeline without that.

30p does looks good on the lcd and 24p looks kinda weird, but there is no reason to not use 24p cause it looks funny on the lcd. 24p is the only reason I bought a dvx, aside form its professional features.

I know a kid who saved up his money for a year or so and bought an xl2, but doesn't use 24p because he says "it looks funny." No, this is not fiction.

Hey Mike K,

Use a firewire cable, I think 4pins (double check) to a 6pin or 4pin (which ever one your computer has) firewire port on your computer. When you plug in, your computer should detect your DVX.

Just two follow up questions:

Mike K what do you find appealing about 30p or displeasing about or 24p? I haven't tried 30p yet, but I'm gonna now, just to see the difference.

Renegadewill, What do you mean that 24p looks weired on an LCD? Is the image blurry, too sharp, blocking?

Thanks guys,

manymoosh

24p/pA looks odd on the LCD because (I think, I could be wrong, its been known to happen) it is designed to display 60i and not 24p/pA. I'm not an expert, but that seems to be what the deal is. Either way it looks alot better on a real monitor/TV.

Thanks for everyones answers. I bought a firewire and have been uploading and editing so I am happy.

I bought it at B&H for 2300$

I like 30p because it has a very nice and smooth look to me. 24p seems choppy but I hear it is great for clips you eventually want to be slow motion. I just got it so I don't know everything, but ill keep playing around

Two questions, I know the DVX is known for having great quality, but when I upload it to my computer, it comes out in bad quality. How can I make the quality look nice and crisper then how it is coming out. I edit with Premiere and After Effects.

And, people I talk to say that you should not upload straight from the DVX to the comp because it can wear out the head faster. Is this true? What can I upload it to so I don't screw up my camera.

One last question, can I get a link to a good external monitor for fairly cheap. Meaning 150-300

Ummm if you want good slow mo's with the dvx, its best to shoot in 60i and then import it into a 24p timeline and then slow it down....maybe thats where you were getting that idea. As for wearing out the heads, if your gonna spend the 2300 on a camera you really need to buy a 130 cheap mini dv capture cam to import your footage onto the computer. It is very bad to be capturing with your dvx, it does put alot of wear and tear on your video heads and you WILL have to replace them sooner. Just look around on ebay and find a really cheap mini dv camera, anyone will do.

EDIT: Oh yeah and if you want a really cheap external monitor you can look into some of the portable dvd players that have input jacks in the back, i know some people use that as a cheap solution. I've also seen a video where a guy built a jib crane and used a playstation one (the one that has the built in screen) as his external monitor...just some cheap alternatives to think about.

Ok, yes using your DVX as a deck to import with isn't great, but it's not like it's going to blow up or something. The heads are rated for a long time (probably longer then you will use them unless you are shooting everyday professionally) so don't stress too much about getting another camera to import with. There are more important things you could spend money on right now, like a good tripod or something. Get a capture camera when you have some spare cash laying around.

You say your footage looks bad when you get it into the computer. You need to be extremely specific with how you are doing, what you are watching it on (LCD monitor), what mode you shot in, what NLE you are using, etc. The more specific you are the more we can help you.

watching it in premiere pro cs3 on my laptop and in itunes, shot in 30p, dunnp what NLE is so can you explain, sorry I just got it so im getting started
