hi all i'm a pround new owner of the af102 here in australia, i read that you can set the picture to black and white and have peaking in red to assist with focus whist recording. but i cant seem to find this function. how to do i set the camera up to use these features ?

thankyou regards Marty.

(i) Quickest way press user 1 preset (button on left hand side of cam) this (factory ?) preset has peaking enabled, you should see a red border appear around the colour flip out screen

(ii) press menu button near EVF electronic viewfinder, using small joystick navigate to "DISPLAY" select this item and then navigate through the options its the last menu item there EVF colour, set it to off

red peaking in a B&W viewfinder, taken from Barry Greens book

Not sure where the term came from

Its a electronic system to assist in focusing...Certain cameras have peaking, its an edge detection circuit (the camera electronics look for a sharp transition in luminance) then in the viewfinder with peaking on this edge will have a either a colour fringe or white highlight (monochrome EVF)
Some cameras let you change the colour of the peaking.... but basically the more precise the focusing on a given point/edge the more intense the viewfinder peaking on that point /edge will be, so you adjust the focus for max colour fringe to ensure your selected point/edge is in focus.

Or the colour fringe is the cameras way of saying this point/edge is in focus you adjust focus for max effect

Thanks....Kinda figured that's what it was. I assume on a cam like the af100 with VF set to B+W and red peaking, then using a monitor for focusing isn't really nessisary???
Or is it just not THAT effective?

I intend to buy a monitor... i used to shoot SD daily for news... this HD stuff is a whole new ball game... only when you get back to the edit on a descent HD monitor can you see where you were really focused :-)

The peaking is essential I used it all the time, but i fancy an external pixel mapped monitor

Depends how much contrast the subject has. Soft edges, like faces in flat light, can be hard to focus even with peaking. In those cases pixel-to-pixel magnification can make a huge difference.

As Barry has stated previously, a bit of catchlight in the eyes can make focusing through the EVF with peaking much easier, but that's not always practical.

Fast lenses wide-open are also easier for me to critically focus than closed down. Wide-open the focus pops, while stopped down the DOF can obscure the critical focus. When I need to shoot stopped down I often crack the aperture open for critical focus & stop down again for recording.

thanks for the reply. got it working. can u make the flip out screen B&W or is that only for the rear eye cup view finder ( dont know the right name ).

Yes you can make the LCD black and white, just go to LCD SET and turn the color all the way down. The Focus In Red will still show up in red even with the color turned off, which is quite nice.
