Just got a new camera - Sony F35

I was going to say the same thing- by the time you spec those minis out for studio use you're often carrying the same size load- dimension wise. Arri is either laughing or shaking their heads since that was mostly developed for gimbal and aerial use. I cringe when I see some camera builds with cages and awkward weight distribution. Just hoist the tank baby

They're still very light, and that's lovely (trust me, I'm shooting a feature on the Alexa Studio at the moment!) but in many ways all of the external rigging you have to do to the Mini makes it feel like a step backwards ergonomically. It's like the bad old days all over again.

The Mini MkII will be amazing though (assuming they rejig it to function as the A-camera everyone's using it as).

If you're lone wolfing the I'd agree the weight savings can mean everything. If you've got an AC and a cart, and using any support device like easy or ready rig I feel it makes the extra weight worth it. As a handheld fanatic I want that weight-- I like the way the mass feathers starting and stopping movement. Just feels more planted and grounded like AWD vs. FWD. Probably all in my head. :undecided

I think it's all in your head Kyle. I'm having to have weekly chiropractic and myotherapy appointments to get through this shoot with the Alexa Maxi, and my shoulder is bruised and scaly... and we're only just through the first week of shooting!

I suppose you're right-- here's hoping my regimen of squats and deadlifts keeps me operating into old age but I sometimes still feel my vertebrate singed after even one of those long days. It's a different feeling going to sleep after swinging around a 15lb rig vs. 35lb. Some days I'd kill for the ergonomics and weight of a C300 when I'm shouldering the F35 or doing gimbal work. The ready rig really does wonders though and moves all that strain to your hips- just a different kind of stress. Wish you luck through the rest of your feature!

BTW, just making sure you guys understand what I'm doing.
This is Alexa's prores with Arri's log to 709 standard conversion applied vs Sony F35 with the same Arri LUT but without the arri colorspace transformation (because the sensors don't have the same colorspace, duh) plus some extra mojo added before that and my own Sgamut colorspace transformation (which isn't great but does a better job than what I've tried so far).

Not in that particular order.

Hmm. Arri top Sony bottom?

A bit more saturated blues and greens in the top one where the bottom has slightly warmer greens it seems. Both looking really good. I did some similar things with the F3, grabbing the gamma conversion from Arri and then making a transform from Sgamut to Sgamut3.cine. Are you going to REC709?

From looking at the first example, I'm gonna venture Sony top, Arri bottom. I'm looking at the red taillights and the blue trashcan... seems to be a couple of pts too saturated. Blind guess. I suppose the main encouraging takeaway here is how similar the images are, tonally. Nice work on the LUTs Mac.

Edit: can I change my answer?

This might be cheating, but in the second example I can just barely make out the vertical CCD stripe off the car's reflection on the hood. Maybe I'm seeing things. If this is true, the odd saturation of the blues and reds in the first example should be noted if it's coming off the Arri.

Arri top on both - slight magenta bias in the skin tones.

Unless you pushed the Sony this way and then good job out-Alexa'ing the Alexa!
In any case they are incredibly close and both look terrific.

I'm liking the bottom images on both shots, I live in LA, and the lower picture with the trash can has a truer to my eye look of the blue these cans are in LA. I like the bottom picture in the second shot in the alley because the highlight roll off looks nicer, and once again the top shot is doing something wrong in the blues, and also has more saturation in it. So basically the top shots of both these images look more digital to my eye.

My guess would be Sony's on the bottom of both (it's those warmer yellow tones in the foliage that suggests it to me).

Alright gentlemen. In both cases the alexa is on top and sony on the bottom.
I will post some footage soon. I didn't have a tripod so it's a shitty comparison though.
I am surprised at how identical both cameras can look regarding tone curve, almost indistinguishable. Color reproduction is close butof course not a perfect match. The Alexa seems a bit better to my eyes except when it goes all crazy wih blues, such as the garbage bin.
