Just got a new camera - Sony F35

hahahah I made that at a CNC shop. Notice i did a bit of dremel work, completely removed the top dock and the metal that surrounded it. Not for the faint of heart. I was committed to the fact that I would only be using a single dock on the back to tap into the dual link on this camera and the top would only ever be for mounting/handles.

Damn...nicely done, but I don't think I'll go there. Guess it's stock L or top handle for me next.

Found this in my hunt for Pl glass for the f35 and thought someone might be interested. Nikon to Pl adapterhttp://www.ebay.com/itm/Century-Precision-Optics-PL-to-Nikon-lens-adapter-extender-converter-1-4x-RED-/251972001089?hash=item3aaab39d41:g:hEYAAOSw~OdVYqRe

Hey F35 family,
I've loved being a part of this community, getting inspired by other cameramen & women who are brilliant and curious.
With regret, I'm selling my F35+accessories: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...mera-package-6000&p=1986598941#post1986598941

I've also put my Zeiss Standard Speed set up for grabs: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...-Xenar-75-2)-6900&p=1986598921#post1986598921

I think they're a terrific pairing together. Happy to answer any questions about either of these on their respective pages or via PM.
Hope they go to a loving home! They'd be a great tax write-off before the end of the year for someone...

EDIT: Posts are back up!

Finally getting my F35 all up and running, figured I would post a customary pic of the rig. As one of the few owners using a Codex if anyone has any questions about the setup I will answer what I can.

i like your setup, i think it is very different than the way others have gone. Can you put that on a tripod or do you need to take the shoulder rig off?

The shoulder rig has to come off. It is really easy though. There is a button on the bottom that you press that releases it from the dovetail on the bottom of the baseplate. The baseplate can the slide on then dovetail that I already have attached to my tripod. The nice thing about the shoulder rig is that since I am using a Codex the record trigger on the handle can start and stop recording, which was the main reason why I chose to go with this setup as it was what the camera was designed to be used with.

I tried one of those ARRI shoulder rigs in a late incarnation of my F35 setup. They work quite nicely, and are not cheap!

I also thought about an ARRI S-2 as the camera was designed to be used with the ARRI shoulder rigs and ARRI gear is very well made.

But ultimately I decided to go in a different direction. Mainly because I think the S-2 puts the center of gravity too high and I also wanted something that would be more flexible regarding the adjustment of the shoulder pad.

Furthermore, I decided to go with 15mm rods instead of 19mm. 15mm is strong enough, specially that I never use zooms with the camera. The advantage of the 19mm system is mainly the dovetail system. But there are ARRI dovetail systems for 15mm too. So I got an ARRI adapter for the F35 to allow the use of 15mm rods at the right height which allows me to ditch the F35 riser plate and have the center of gravity lower. It connects to an ARRI dovetail rod plate which will be permanently attached to the camera.

I'm now in the process of developing a shoulder rig which will have a dovetail plate on top so I can easily slide the F35 on it. It will also allow for adjustment of the shoulder pad, as for good balance I don't think it should be so far back if you are not using a film mag or the monstrous SRW-1. It will also have the camera sitting much lower, so you don't need to break your neck to look up at the EVF.

With the dovetail system, moving the camera from the tripod to the shoulder rig is a breeze. I much prefer this than any system based on the Sony VCT-14 quick release. It's just not sturdy enough for a camera the size of the F35 IMO. And also, I wanted to avoid systems based on shoulder rigs that go on top of the tripod, making the whole center of gravity way too high. Most if not all of those systems are also based on the Sony quick release system, which as I said I didn't want.

I was lucky and managed to find the baseplate and rig here on dvxuser at a pretty good price so I went for it, thanks Hunterqual.

The Sony VCT-14 isn't solid for basically any camera! Let alone an F35.

The arri shoulder set works really nice for shorter setups, it only become a problem if your camera gets longer as the adjustment for the handles is very limited. It's 10x better than the S-3 set, which goes for the SR3.

I don't, however, think 15mm LWS is very suitable for the F35. I appreciate why people do it, but I find 15mm rods to just not be up to the standard I would like. There is way too much flex. But I'm putting fairly chunky lenses on my cameras these days.

What plate is that if I may ask?
I'm currently looking for a bridge plate. But if you say your's ditched the adapter plate and has an even lower center of gravity, I'm very interested.

Also isn't there an horizontal balance advantage on 19mm rods in regards to 15mm lw? I mean 19mm has a broader base for handles etc. Or is this stupid thinking?
At the moment I find it rocks a bit left to right, but then again I'm holding rods in my hands / no handles yet.

Very nice camera, shame about the out of date firmware though. Not sure how Sony would get on for upgrading it.
Sony would be perfectly happy to upgrade it, no matter who owns it. It the upgrade was offered for free to everyone else, it would be the same for whomever had this camera. If it was paid, the price would be the same.

Mitch I was thinking more about the fact this camera has been modified, and I wonder if those modifications would get in the way of the necessary hardware for V3/4. There isn't much room in these things.

I don't think Sony really cares. If the mods don't get in the way then they'll do it. If there's any chance that the mods might effect the upgrade, they'll probably say that you pay no matter what and they cannot guarantee the result. If the mods are definitely in the way then Sony is not going to go out of its way to figure out a work around. Any upgrade by Sony will be done based on exactly how Japan instructs the work to be done. They'll take a look and it's either a yes or a no.
