Just got a new camera - Sony F35

As far as I know - and someone who knows more than me feel free to correct me - you will never see more "punch" or colour from the signal whether recorded in 8,10,12 or 14 bit.

The signal it is converting is an analog one and I believe regardless of the bit depth of the recorder it will always be showing the same ultimate top and bottom. What changes of course is how many steps are between that top and bottom, hence LOG type recording benefitting massively from 10 or 12 bit recording because fairly dramatic changes are needed to produce even a "normal" picture.

I am very interested in the new REC2020 standard, I am going to be paying a visit to Sony soon and seeing their new HDR screen in action. should be interesting.

I agree I am getting into ridiculous areas of talking about things we probably couldn't see.

But I am also talking about the photochemical process vs the Digital Intermediate in a way. And we all know even if on paper it's the same. Christopher Nolan would tell us it's not.

The best possible time to benefit from the F35 analog nature is before the 12-bit down conversion. We get color correction applied to the 14-bit stream.

Now I know I am way beyond what we can see. SLOG to the 7Q works great and CD has added the much needed MLUT, it's a perfected system.

But I honestly shoot burned in color on my F35 nearly every time I shoot a project when someone else is editing. I just shot all the interviews for a documentary getting theatrical release next year all in CAMCORDER gamma on my F35. I wish I could share some screen shots but they want to keep it under wraps until release. I know this sounds crazy, and is very opposite to the F35 thinking of capture more Dynamic Range. However, it looked awesome. It crushes the black and makes the color vibrant. It looks great straight out of the camera and I didn't have to worry about the editors ability to handle SLOG footage.

I think we have all seen the problem with Hyper Gamma settings, they still need a lot of work in post, still very flat, muddy almost.

F35 trades Dynamic Range for Noise. Nearly every setting that increases it's ability to see into the shadows also increases noise floor. The F35 highlight magic seems to hold even as you loose dynamic range so this is also a good thing.

I have tried messing around with the knee point in Hyper gamma 5 mode the last few days. That combined with increasing the saturation, low key saturation, enabling black gamma has brought it much more to life. The knee point seems to be important to making the Hyper gammas work a little nicer. There are so many ways to manipulate the image inside the F35.

I'm not trying to start a fight about the SLOG workflow, I know it is a great way to use the F35. Proven.

But it should be possible to get great results straight out of the camera, and I am intrigued by the color correction machine inside the F35. I know there is a color box which works with the F35, finding one of these cheap might be fun to mess further with this stuff.

Thanks!=))) people! You can share their interesting .ce2 files? I believe that we are very small, and we have a narrow circle of fans F35. I think to help each other )

Half the problem is this - there's only so many people out there who really understand or care about the high end capabilities of this gear. And most of them move on to using the newest high end gear. Most of the folks who use DSLRs and $10k to $20k mid range cameras aren't really taking a close look at these high end cameras, even second hand. Additionally, for those who have come of age with the small light weight cameras, contemplating moving to a full size camera package has a lot of ancillary considerations and expenses - tripods, dovetails, bigger batteries, and so forth. So it's a limited market that appreciates these things. By the time the older Alexas are available for sub $10k, most of the crowd is likely to avoid them because they'll be really heavy and top out at 120fps when the new small cams may be up to 6k and 480fps with global shutter. And they'll choose that over the proven color science of the older Arri Alexas.

Music to my ears! The less buyers there are for it, the cheaper it will be for me.

If anyone is looking for the latest made Nikon plate for the F35 (extremely well machined), I'm considering selling mine! PM me for details!
