Just got a new camera - Sony F35

Just to confirm what Keith says, I expect the viewfidner display to be garbage for 3-5 seconds, no longer.

As for screws yep, go to your local hardware shop. Infinitely cheaper than Sony!

Instructions for the firmware update will be with the manual that came with the firmware update - it is online, don't have it to hand but the instructions are pretty easy.

Guys I can't wrap my head around this slim IF box for the F35. How does that XLR power anything? I know its designed for the SR-R1, but there is no connection to a Vlock battery once the battery is seated.
Anu thoughts?

That plate is designed to power the SR-R1, which sits on that V-lock mount. I know it looks like it is for a battery, but it isn't. The XLR is a power OUTPUT from the camera, I don't know exactly where they get it from but basically it uses the power connection that the camera would use to power the SRW-1 deck.

Hot pixel - advice please

Hot pixel - advice please

Hello Everyone,

I'm in need of assistance and advice. I have finally been able to properly test my F35 this past weekend and have discovered a hot pixel right in the middle-left side of the frame. I did the Auto Black Balance several times but that one pixel remains. It is less visible at 0dB, however becomes very apparent as soon as I raise the gain. At +6bB and above it is red hot.

I am attaching a few links to the full-size images.

I have not yet updated the firmware. I don't know if that will help in any way. If there is no solution to this problem, since I purchased it from Otto Nemenz and have a period of testing, do you think I should send it back for them to check or replace?

One of the things I like most about this camera is the grain it generates when increasing the gain. So it annoys me that there is such a visible red hot pixel in the frame as soon as I touch the gain (it much less visible but still there even at 0dB).

Any advice and comments is much appreciated.

Thank you.
Igor

Update.
Let it rest.
Black balance it a few times after the camera has been on for a while and in intervals of a few minutes.
It should go away.

Thank you Macgregor for the quick response. I will do update it this evening and follow your instructions.
I really hope it does go away.

Igor

If it doesn't, don't panic. There are ways of manually getting rid of it which Otto Nemenz will be able to do easily.

I forgot all the secret button combinations but the F35 has 3 levels of pixel repair that the user can get to. First is black balance, which can deal with slightly misbehaving pixels. Inside the engineering menu, you can invoke the APR that takes a lot longer and masks most bad pixels. Lastly, there is manual pixel repair that allows you to use crosshair overlay to pinpoint and mask a pixel. This method should only be done be someone that really knows the process because it cannot be undone easily.

I used to have all this memorized, but the details have long departed my brain. Try to find a maintenance manual. In the end, dead pixels are not a dead camera. Sony has had ways to fix them for many generations of cameras.

Good luck.

It is my understanding that more or less every digital camera out there has a bad pixel or two hidden away. The method in the menu Carlos mentioned is RPN correction I think (Residual Pixel Noise) but yeah, should only be attempted with some serious equipment.

You can undo it easily, but you need to know what you're doing.

It's getting more and more tempting to get a F35. Now they are going for just above $3K. Was tempted to bid on it but ended up missing it: Ebay 131125629714

Wonder if it's legit. Seems to good to be true.

Legit enough, I think. He's been trying to sell that camera for well over a year. But it's stripped back to just the body, so that needs to be taken into consideration when comparing the price against a fully kitted out camera like one from Otto Nemenz or another rental shop.

Yes it's legit, I was a little sad to see it go so low but you have to understand this is a very limited setup with a high cost to get accessories. Although I was watching also, I just can't justify a 2nd, this body could be adapted to a nice hyper deck setup for around 5k which is ridiculous for the nicest HD camera ever made. Look in the recent sold, and you will see an F35 that has nearly every component a real F35 package would of come with back in 2009 and see that it sold for almost 10k. Whatever you buy in with the F35 is what you will be stuck with. There are fewer than 300 of these cameras out there, once they settle in the hands of those who have read these pages and love the look of the camera, we might see the sales stop showing up. This seller sold it as an auction, a very foolish move for a rare cinema camera. I have sold 8 Eclair ACL camera packages that I collected over my years of shooting 16mm, every time I waited a few weeks for a buy it now, it was substantially higher than an auction would ever reach, simply because the pool of people who find the auction and watch it over the course of a week are very tiny. I'm sure if they had advertised the body for sale for $4500 someone would of bitten in a few weeks. It's a unique camera with a steep learning curve but there certainly is demand for these, it just takes time to find a seller.

I went the route of buying a basic F35 camera head and following Macgregors guide for using prosumer gear with this high end camera head. I love it and I think I can still hold the claim of smallest self contained setup for an F35, a stripped down F35 without interface box feeding directly into a atomos blade is probably smaller, but I still haven't seen a photo of any setup more compact. If I could buy another F35 rig, or next year when they hit the absolute floor on price, I would of gone for a complete package with viewfinder, SR recorder and PL lenses. The price on HDCAM SR tapes is so cheap you could acquire a few thousand hours by hunting the deals on ebay. If only the F35 or 9000PL had a way to capture to a computer through the camera, similar to firewire log and transfer. I think the setup to get the most out of this camera would be the original, shoot to tape 12 bit. Of course HDCAM decks have a lot more uses so they will be holding their value for a while into the future.

Surprised to see that ebay seller price it so low! I was about to buy that camera from him a few months ago, but backed out and got a recently serviced F35 from videofax in SF. Rather pay a little more for security. who knows what kind of issues may come up. I know Keith had to get another optical block for his setup. Hopefully another member shows up here from that sale! Any F35 is a deal on my eyes!
