Just got a new camera - Sony F35

After taking a peak inside the Hyperdeck, you need a Torx T10, I discovered there was a small gap of space on both sides of the metal body which would allow small screws without rubbing or damaging the hyperdeck. Please note I drilled holes in the hyperdeck but left the Anton Bauer plate and the IF box connection untouched.

I drilled 8 small holes where the IF box connection would line up with the hyperdeck back plate. I was able to find 6 that lined up with the Anton Bauer plate, but it did require removing the battery which is held in with adhesive. Once the screws were in, I covered the ones that were over the battery with tape to avoid any metal cutting the plastic casing. I found very small screws which had flat heads, and tiny bolts which would fit inside the holes already made in the IF box and the Anton Bauer plate.

Overall it is extremely solid now, I would feel good bringing it on a production. All this requires is tracking down some small specialty screws and nuts, a drill, Torx T10 for the hyperdeck and regular screwdrivers.

I have found the part from sony which is the connector for the IF box to the f35 body, price is only $105. Search for CA JOINT. This could be very useful as a dead mount for any recorder/battery plate without having to take apart the IF box.

Macgregor, would you mind me asking where you got the F35 plate with 15mm rods? I am assuming this is a custom made item by a specific rental house? I have not been able to find another like it. Have you made progress with the KiPro Quad? It seem that a double system of camera, and IF box are required for troubleshooting where your issue is, however I know this is not easy to come by. Perhaps some special line from the camera to the IF box is used in the 12-bit signal that is not normally used. The pins between the IF box and the F35 mount could be a possible weak point, also the ribbon cables inside are another place damage could easily occur if opened and handled incorrectly. Although a replacement IF box is an outrageous price, tracking down the broken component might be worthwhile.

Hi man,
I´ve got a couple days to take care of this. Would you mind sharing the exact items (sony parts) that you purchased to get the mod and where did you order them from?
Any other considerations before attemtping this mod?

Macgregor,

These are the parts I've purchased for the project:

http://www.abelcine.com/store/Anton-Bauer-QRC-SC-ALTA-Gold-Mount-for-Sony-F65-Camera/ - this includes the gold mount and another plate for mounting to.

https://www.servicesplus.sel.sony.com/PartsPLUSSearch.aspx?ArrayVal=2 - search for f35 then CA joint, part #309660803. Price was 114.45 with shipping to LA. I ordered straight through the website, you just need to make an account. This is the connector from the Interface box to the F35 body, it is also very easy to remove from the interface box if you don't want to buy one.

Handful of really small bolts and nuts, I wish I had some specifications but I just went to a specialty store and went through the screws until I found some small enough. If you look at the CA Joint, there are tiny round holes, you need nuts that will fit inside these holes without sticking out otherwise it will rub when you try to connect it to the f35 body. Inside the hyper deck is a surprising amount of space on either side for screw heads.

Tools needed:
Torx t10 screwdriver to take apart hyperdeck - its really easy to get inside the thing.
Regular philips screwdriver
Drill with small bits- hyperdeck metal is really easy to drill through
Optional- grinder to shorten the screws that stick out too far, I had to grind some of mine but I could of found shorter screws that wouldn't require this step.

Once you get all the parts, its pretty obvious where you need to drill holes to mount the hyperdeck. The anton bauer plate has a lot of options, I tried to find 5 that lined up the best. You will need to remove the battery in the hyperdeck to mount a screw underneath that.

Sorry I don't have more photos from the operation. I am actually getting back into the F35 game, I've been traveling so I finally have the time again. I bought a new hyperdeck to replace the one I broke the sdi out on. I am going to redrill in the new case because the glue residue on my old one is ugly. I will take a bunch of photos to show how to take everything apart and where to drill the holes. If you want, you can send it to me to put together for you, it is really simple though, the only tricky part is tracking down the screws. I went to Lucky's Hardware in Burbank, CA but any small specialty screw hardware store should have options.

I also have the wooden camera top handle mounted to my custom top plate, it looks really nice. I will post some photos once I get everything together. I haven't been able to track down a BandPro 15mm plate for the F35 but I was playing around with an Epic and realized the height from the base to the PL mount is the same for the Epic. I tried the wooden camera 15mm rod attachment for the Epic on my F35 and the rods were in the perfect position. The base is smaller than the base of the f35 but it doesn't seem to be a huge issue.

Hello all. Using the F35 more and more at the moment and it's going really well. Have stripped it down so it is lightweight enough to mount on an easyrig - which gives you so much versalitity. Will post some images soon.
I want to take my F35 up to Scotland to cover a golf event soon and need a longer lens. Until I can afford a Zeiss 70-200mm PL mount lens I thought a better option would be to use a EF to PL mount adaptor. So my question is what is the best EF to PL mount adaptor available giving me accurate aperature control please?
Here are a couple of stills from a current project I am working on with the F35, will upload video samples when it can, but it is looking great!

No such unicorn exists I'm afraid sparky.

Maths/physics means it is impossible to put an EF lens on something with a hard PL mount. The only cameras that take both you physically remove the PL mount, not add an adapter to it.

I am also not sure there are any practical EF adapters with smooth, manual-style aperture control. I think they're mostly a bit jerky. Not much experience in this field, I am sure someone else can shed some light on it.

In the realm of affordable lenses with a PL mount, I've found the following:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/80-200mm-f2...878?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43bbd121b6
Looks like an older Tamron lens that has been converted to PL mount.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/80-200mm-T3...63260049?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item337865a791
Something a little newer. Obviously both these suggestions are still lenses that have been converted to PL but the big advantage is you don't have to worry about trying to shim an adapter or modify your F35 mount.

Looking around their ebay store, they seem to be a company called All Star Cine our of Taiwan. They offer a 50mm prime as well. I also noticed they make this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RED-Bottom-...635?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item337fececc3

This riser would be the correct height for the f35. I am tempted to try one out because of the small footprint.

Oh, you just remind me that I have a bunch of PL mount zeiss lenses that are cheap and that I need to put up for sale.

That 80-200 (looks like nikon lens) seems very tempting for 3K.

Hi James, hope you're well. Just out of interest, what Zeiss Standard Speed lenses are you using and what mount do they have? Thanks, Sparky

Last call: I'm putting my F35 up for sale. Body with original PL mount, Sony C30W viewfinder, assist panel, Sony Vmount battery back, Bandpro base, IDX 12V, Cinedeck EX, and a large Innerspace case for all of it.

Sorry to hear you're moving it on. Just out of interest why are are selling it please? And how much for? Thanks, Sparky

I am selling it since I'm doing a long-term documentary gig in which I need a MUCH smaller rig. (going C100). It's a low-hours unit--around 800.

Dear all F35 users! Here is a short clip containing a montage of shots from a recent shoot. It's part of a small project we are working on with the composer. Really happy with the way the camera performed, and really happy with the darker shots in the console area too. All shot on the Sony F35, recorded to a Samurai and shot on a RED 15-50mm lens.

Well, something much more resembling an F35 is now in my possession. I'd talk more, but I gotta go play... err... *ahem* ...study my new.. umm... tool, yeah that's it.

Tomorrow I am posting my F35/C30W viewfinder/Cinedeck EX (all with accessories, etc.)
Giving the peeps here one final shout-out priority.
Camera is low hours with IF Box, assist panel, battery back, etc.
Cinedeck works great with it, etc. blah blah. ;)
Thanks.
