Just got a new camera - Sony F35

Hi Miguel.

I did some tests but mistakingly shot 10bit 444 FS2 on the 25P footage and 8bit 422 FS1 on the 50P, and I should've kept the same for both.
I havent had another chance yet, with back to back shoots and editing/post. I'll make some time asap, maybe today even, as I need to add some 50P shots to a music video I did recently. hoping to do that today. sit tight...

I managed to do the 25P and 50P test. shooting on the very same codec/bitrate etc seems to minimize the contrast/difference I originally spotted with 25P being 10bit 444 and 50P being 8bit 422.
Both shot Cineform 8bit 422 FS1. only difference is shutter speed, it doubles when set to 50P from 25P. Maybe I should've corrected the shutter to match.

The 25P footage is also a tad over exposed, apologies but I was chasing time with sun setting quickly with lots more to shoot afterwards.

Thanks Justin!
It's hard to compare because it seems like the exposure was different.
If you leave the shutter comp ON, just open the iris 1 stop. I would love to see the results. XD

Hello all. Just an idea I wanted to you by you all. I am on the road at present so can't try this out at home. I am currently using my F35 (on as many shoots as possible) , recording to a Atomos Samurai. I currently have a mic velcro'd on to the side of the body, and run this through the two xlr ports on in the interface box. When I then bring in the pro res files to Sony Vegas, I get two audio tracks. It's great to have these to sync to an external audio recording, and often the audio is fine just for a background fx track. Now if we could get the external recorder to record a balanced audio track from the camera it would be so more useful. Here is my question! Could you attach a recorder such as a Tascam DR100MKII Audio Recorder - to the side/back of the camera, and monitor the audio through it (running the mics through it via its XLR ports) - and get that audio directly into the camera then in to the Samurai - or directly into the Samurai. This if possible, would be fantastic. You could then shoot away with interviews etc without the need of a soundman or having to snyc up the audio later. What do you think?

Looks like Sound Devices have fixed the issues with full-range recording in ProRes4444 on their PIX240 recorder. Might make it a more viable partner with the F35 now.

Apologies if this isn't the right place to ask, but are there any west coast F35 owners willing to rent their cam for an upcoming feature of mine? Dying to use this cam and owning one just isn't in the cards at the moment.

this is good news about the sound devices, are there any negatives on this recorder now or is this going to be the one for 12-bit?

Just read this on the new Pix240 firmware and was coming to report. Apparently this has already been discovered.
  • RGB (4:4:4) full range values now always recorded and output with full dynamic range instead of legal range.
I wonder if Resolve will read the files correctly now. I will do some tests this week.

Another F65 on ebay. Vague description of damage, selling for $4000. I imagine it's an important expensive component that is broken, but it's strange to see these coming up for sale.

Jugsgorilla,
Also the multiplexer required to combine the two sdi into the 3g sdi, another cable, more power... The sound devices sound recording and timecode in/out and very nice options.

I feel like it's a waiting game on the perfect recorder, at some point there will be more 4k recorder options, 4K recorders are necessary for the F35, but it seems along with them comes 444 12bit HD. I'm curious to see what Blackmagic comes out with in the next year or so, although it seems with most of the recorders you are going to need to merge the two cables into one which requires additional hardware, the Ki Pro Quad doesn't require this because it has multiple sdi inputs so that might be the way to go if you are trying to stay compact.
