Just got a new camera - Sony F35

Thanks for your comments. I only used a couple of F3 shots in this clip - which were a couple of external scenic shots - all the classroom shots etc were with the F35. I think the exterior footage from the F35 looks so organic (compared to the F3), but some of the recent stuff I have shot on the F3 (demo in the clip below) looks so nice too so it's a tough call on what to use at times.

I have got my F35 set up looking good now and working well thanks to Hawk Woods adapting a V-LOK plate onto the back of the interface box for me. With the Samurai (which ocassional records a black frame? anyone find this - does the same with the F3) and a TV Logic monitor as the viewfinder - in combination with a RED 17-50mm lens - it's actually pretty streamline for a big camera. I do have bars for the front of the camera with handles I use when shooting handheld as well - but these are not in these pictures - i was trying to keep the weight to a minimum. I actually use a mic as well which you may find interesting, attaching it to the right side of the camera body with a little velcro , as the Samurai does record an audio track on two channels which is really handy, esp for syncing up with an audio track that's been recorded via a soundman. The levels come out okay as well - they do peak with gusts of wind etc and very loud noises, but fine to use for underlying audio on a cut away track. This find was a real bonus for me and my workdflow.

Here is another clip, a short montage of recent shots all with the F35 I am using in a small project:

Now, if only RED would make a compact 17-85mm lens I would be in heaven!

Hi Mac,

I do believe that 45c is outside the camera's official operating range. I did have it explained to me once how heat can cause extra noise in the sensor, I can not remember the full explanation now but it's along the line of heatwaves hitting the sensor and being mistaken for lightwaves, or something similar. I wish I could remember the proper explanation.

Have you tried a good black balance, or potentially a black shading?

Also, I don't know if any of you guys have noticed, but I only noticed recently the F35 has a shutter to protect the lens when the camera is off or when black balancing. I'd gotten so used to capping lenses for black balance, I did it recently without capping the lens and was shocked when it worked - only when I looked down the barrel with the camera off did I realise why!

JM

Ye it's true that the shutter closes to blackout the sensor! Very cool.
Whenever I need BL it's nice to know I can just flick de switch.

James, any footy for us from your WW project?
Id love to post some of what I've been doing on various projects but I'm still finding the F35 sweet spots and trying to get more acquainted before I post. I've done some nice stuff, but not keen to show the F35 fam just yet, with some really good eyes here to crit.

thanks to mac once again for the ride! And thanks to all that have contributed for collective knowledge.

James, just to make sure I'm doing the right procedure, black shading is done in "custom" mode, but all it seems to do is set all black numbers to 0? Please elaborate. I know you have explained this before, but I'm not sure I'm doing it properly.

Many thanks.

Also, does anyone know if it's possible to set the F35 to roll off saturation in the highlights? Similar to the way Alexa functions.
example: when direct sunlight hits the sensor, vertical smear occurs, but continues to saturate highlights to the point it burns "yellow". I'm sure you've all witnessed this before. I fix it in post generally with highlight saturation roll off, but would be nice if it could be done in camera.

Macgregor, footage looks awesome. Would love to see it in HD as well. Is this all shot with your Nikon lenses?

Hi, I'm just back from Mauritania. We're all alive and the gear is perfectly fine. Quite incredible considering the amount of heat and sand we've suffer. I cannot think of any worse shooting conditions. Internet is very slow, so I couldn't upload anything in HD.

Shot on nikon and walimex lenses, I didn´t want to bring PL lenses to the desert...

Hello everyone,
I'm still lost in the desert, but here is some ungraded footage from this small project I'm shooting in Mauritania:

pw: mauritania

I've been experiencing some extra noise in the footage when shooting in extreme hot locations (up to 45ºC), at first I thought it had to be the F35 but then I thought it could also be introduce by the recorderd becase it was really really hot.

BTW, That custom plate for the hyperdeck looks terrific. I'll dig into that as soon as I'm back.

just amazing!!

To be honest black shading is something of a dark art, and something I've really rarely done before. I'd suggest asking a Sony tech for advice as I don't want to inform you incorrectly.

All the black numbers *should* be 0 I believe, black shading will correct any glaring errors on the sensor.

I'd love to post some samples but the production are being very very protective of any screen grabs or footage. I may have material from other projects available to view soon however. Watch this space.

I was out in London at 4am today filming and the camera performed absolutely beautifully. I just love the way Sonys behave under artificial lights, my F900 had the same magic look.

After taking a peak inside the Hyperdeck, you need a Torx T10, I discovered there was a small gap of space on both sides of the metal body which would allow small screws without rubbing or damaging the hyperdeck. Please note I drilled holes in the hyperdeck but left the Anton Bauer plate and the IF box connection untouched.

I drilled 8 small holes where the IF box connection would line up with the hyperdeck back plate. I was able to find 6 that lined up with the Anton Bauer plate, but it did require removing the battery which is held in with adhesive. Once the screws were in, I covered the ones that were over the battery with tape to avoid any metal cutting the plastic casing. I found very small screws which had flat heads, and tiny bolts which would fit inside the holes already made in the IF box and the Anton Bauer plate.

Overall it is extremely solid now, I would feel good bringing it on a production. All this requires is tracking down some small specialty screws and nuts, a drill, Torx T10 for the hyperdeck and regular screwdrivers.

I have found the part from sony which is the connector for the IF box to the f35 body, price is only $105. Search for CA JOINT. This could be very useful as a dead mount for any recorder/battery plate without having to take apart the IF box.

Macgregor, would you mind me asking where you got the F35 plate with 15mm rods? I am assuming this is a custom made item by a specific rental house? I have not been able to find another like it. Have you made progress with the KiPro Quad? It seem that a double system of camera, and IF box are required for troubleshooting where your issue is, however I know this is not easy to come by. Perhaps some special line from the camera to the IF box is used in the 12-bit signal that is not normally used. The pins between the IF box and the F35 mount could be a possible weak point, also the ribbon cables inside are another place damage could easily occur if opened and handled incorrectly. Although a replacement IF box is an outrageous price, tracking down the broken component might be worthwhile.

I'm going to try building one of these as well. How is it handling the weight so far?
The 15mm bottom plate was sold by Bandpro, not sure who make them, but they sell them.

I write a monthly article for RedShark News, and this month I popped down a few words around my 'project' in using my F35. Here is a short clip that's going alongside the piece. I am delighted with some of the images, especially the track and dolly shots, see what you think. Best, Sparky

Cut together a movie promo for a client the other day. Was very impressed by the footage. Thought to myself it had to have been shot on film. Shocked, but not completely surprised when I found on IMBD that it was shot with the F35. Not convinced, found some behind the scenes shots from the set of the movie. Sure enough, there were pictures of the F35 on a steadicam. I've attached some clips from the film. Maybe you guys aren't as easily fooled, but I was completely convinced this movie was shot on film.

Awesome. The only giveaway is the lack of "film grain" otherwise its very film like.

Agreed, absolutely amazing. Just looking at the middle right image reminds me just how good this camera is at shooting into the sun producing lovely creamy images.
