Just got a new camera - Sony F35

Hi man,
tell us a bit about your nikon mount. So how is it working so far? How do you control iris? how do you unlock the lens? is it really really solid?

Mac, the nikon mount is ok for now, I'm getting by. it was a cheap adapter with no leaf springs to secure lenses. Its solid with some lenses, a bit tight with Rokinon's, because the rokinons rear aperture piece protrudes longer than nikon lenses do (tempted to shave a bit off the Rokinons?) and the guy who did the mod made sure he was able to save to ability to reattach the PL mount if need be, so theres not much room around the mount.
Its a bit fiddly, as I have to make sure the iris control is fully stopped down before attaching lenses, and the lever inside the adapter is thin and fragile, so its gotten a bit bent, still works fine tho.

The iris control is evident in the above pic. But the technician has come up with a more practical idea on iris control with a ring that will sit around the mount (a less crude version of the Pro Lock, and it wont be red!)
The lens is unlocked by means of a pin (pic above) design from inside the body that Tink came up with. works well.

I found a better mount made by fotodiox: http://fotodioxpro.com/index.php/fo...-t2i-300d-350d-400d-450d-500d-550d-1000d.html

This design has leaf springs and a more solid design, they claim "no play", as well as 2 lever design for iris control which together with Tink's aperture ring idea will work better. notice the iris lever inside is a loop and far more solid than the cheaper adapers.
I will have this attached soon enough. I'll post as soon as this happens.

Mac, please tell us how your nikon mount is working so far, lens release? Iris control? Pics would be nice.

Thanks

Here's my Nikon mount which happens to use the Eos-Nikon G adapter you've got pictured there Justin - many thanks for posting the photo your converted plate a few weeks back, really helped to get this one done!

I work at SmallHD and since we have a mill & 3D printer I decided to ask Dave the engineer® if he could help me come up with something and this is what he arrived on. It could do with a bit of cleanup but I can confirm that it has a very solid fit on the lenses even though the adapter (the fotodiox "Pro" EOS-Nikon G one) when sitting by itself actually doesn't feel that robust. The spring tensioners hold the lens so well that Dave decided to use a ball spring as the lens lock (pictured) rather than a button which simplified things greatly and works just fine. To take the lenses off you just have to twist with some force but it's never going to accidentally twist off (ie when focusing) just because the lenses have too much friction. The aperture levers are pretty tight as well so they're not perfect and are difficult to adjust at the moment with a lens on but we're gonna be looking at options for it. If I didn't wish to keep the ability to swap back in the PL mount there would be plenty of room to work with the aperture lever so keep in mind that if you have a spare front plate this conversion will be much easier for you.

Here's an old 300mm sitting on it and it has no play whatsoever.

Oh yeah- lovely frame grabs Hunter! :)

Nice one Barrett!

The F35 Frankenikonstein mods really make these beasts our own, and unique. Enjoy.

Now go out and shoot sum!

Thanks, I can't wait to throw some old nikons on this thing like you when my mount is finished ; )

Did some stedicam in the ocean last night, the way this camera handles highlights is so film like it makes me mad:

Has any one tested the bmcc here? From the footage I've looked at it seems it might be a great camera to cut in with f35.

I'm just about to wrap principal photography on a feature where I've shot the BMC (in ProRes) as B-cam to an F3 as A-cam (also in ProRes). And it's frankly astonishing how close the BMC comes to the image quality of the F3. I've been using it with impunity to shoot reverses, close-ups and cutaways.

I think it would cut in just fine with the F35.

They cut just fine. Blackmagic has an issue with very red colors (like a red suitcase), turns it slightly orange and needs to be corrected. Also has some moire/aliasing issues. Other than that, I've seen both cameras work together, cut together.

I don't agree that Blackmagic looks anything like RED, it also doesn't look like F35: it has its own "look" in general.

It looks like RED. :cheesy:

Sorry for the off-topic, and I know you already saw this elsewhere, but I have a specific question about this...
I made a version of Flaat for the BMC. Apart from pushing skin tones slightly away from pink, it tries to deal with this red issue (not completely: the more I try to fix that one, the more I screw other patches). Scroll to the end here and look at the mouseover SpyderCheckr images:

Would that be good enough for you?
(It is good enough for me, I'm just curious if it would please someone with much higher IQ standards, like Kholi)

It's awesome to find some folks thinking about the exact same thing.
I have a BMC4K pre-ordered, but am severely curious about getting an F35, and even considered an HDC27H.

I'd love to see some footage from that Nikon mount!

BTW, I wanted to say congrats to Ed David for his Dove commercial. I think it was beautifully shot (pity for the clipped highlights though).

The more I use the F35 the more I realize how lucky I am to own, or even use one. Sorry theoroll, prolly gonna hang on to mine :)

I did manage to hop outside yesterday when the sun briefly came out (been cloudy/raining all week) and tested out a Nikkor 50mm 1.4 – I was shooting at F2 and used a screw-in Tiffen IRND 1.2, Daylight WB, 180deg., Cine mode, 450 ISO (0db)

Nothing really happening in the footage so apologies for the lack of content but thought it might be handy for some to see what ungraded Prores looks like off the Hyperdeck which you can download here (1.6GB, Prores 422 HQ)

Wish I would've remembered to point up at the sky, sorry about that.

Here's a somewhat extreme graded frame grab (as mentioned before the prores download is ungraded):

Ahhhh the grain, ahhhhhh the highlights!! ;)

Barrett, thanks for the download. Playing with the footage now.
What's the verdict on using Nikons on this baby?
