Just got a new camera - Sony F35

About to get f35 crazy this weekend shooting my first ("real") narrative style bit on it- going to have a super small crew and run dual link to SRW_1 and SR_PC1 over dual link to my assistant. Could be a disaster, we will see... going to need a ton of batteries thats for sure.

I'm going to try Hunterqual (Jon's) vintage zeiss standard speeds on it as well, should be a good time- oh and most of the talent is under 8, and stedicam shots are involved- did I mention Im scared?!

If you're not scared you're deluded. Child actors aren't insecure like adult actors.

Do you guys know if it's possible to get a hold of an IDT for F35 in ACES? I know it's being used by major post-production facilities, but it's not included in Resolve or Speedgrade.
Here's an interesting article about F35 and ACES: http://www.studiodaily.com/2011/02/is-justifieds-new-workflow-the-future-of-cinematography/
And Sony's presentation of the ACES workflow at NAB 2011: http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/video/collections-nab2011/

I'd be very interested in this as well. That article about Justified was exciting.

Hi everyone!
I need some help here: I´m leaving to Mauritania next month and I´ll stay there for 2 weeks, shooting in the desert (lots of sand, which is bad) and in an iron mine (lots of ultra fine iron dust, even worse!!!). OK, so I need to find a cover that would help me protect the camera as best as I can. Unfortunately our cameras have lots of fans, so the task is not going to be easy. And it will be hot (not too hot but definitely hot).
Any ideas?

I just spent a day shooting all handheld f35 with crazy kids- about to shoot 2 more days mostly handheld.

Some thoughts:

Starting out this morning I thought I made the right choice with the f35, "it's so film like"- soon after trying to use my normal doc/lifestyle shooting techniques (where I try to anticipate and am ready for the shot before it happpens)- I realized I couldn't physically keep up with the pace with a heavy camera like the f35. I thought I had made a huge mistake- I dicided to line up a c300 to use as a b cam for emergencies like running around fields with kids. Anyway, I shot all day handheld with the f35 and didn't think I got much, I felt pretty damn dissapointed. I just watched all the footage with a LUT applied tonight- I was stunned- even the clips I knew were not great had life and looked good- totally blown away. This isn't as good as film but it's so far from digital looking. Some how this thing does some sin covering and makes bad clips look good.

I have the c300 on standby for emergency, but I'm going to take every bit of pain I can with the f35 to make it happen- it really just looks that good. Will try to post some stuff soon, stay thirsty my friends.

Looking forward to seeing the footage, Hunter!

And I'm jealous, too. I finally got my F35 back from the shop. I was so excited to get it up and running, but no. It's not meant to be, not just yet, anyway. The camera's great- all working fit as a fiddle. But now it turns out that my new Hyperdeck Shuttle (the one I just bought not 2 months ago) is borked. It won't recognize any video input (HDMI or SDI, from any camera I own, not just the F35). Thankfully I have an extended warranty on the thing so I can at least get my money back (it's too late to return it to B&H). Reminds me of an old country music song that says something about if it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all. heh.

In the meantime, I'm in the market for a better recording system. BMD's quality control has left me cold. Everything available seems to have it's pros and cons, but right now I'm leaning toward a Samurai due to the combination of size, features & price (the F35 repair ate into my budget a bit). Anybody have thoughts on that? I'd love a Pix 240, but I just don't have the room in the budget for that right now.

Also, since I've not yet been able to actually get my system working for one reason or another, I have some confusion regarding actual recording. I know that none of these 3rd party external recorders begin recording when you hit the Run button on the F35. The question is, then: are you guys even using the run button at all? Or are you just hitting record on your external recorders? I can't see that the run button is actually doing anything since the camera can't talk to the recorders.

Thanks!

Impressed with your dedication and speaks to how good this camera is.

Curious about the typical weight of people's rigs here in both handheld and when on tripod, dolly/slider, etc.

I also couldn't use my F35 for 2 months when i got it. It's torture. But you will soon.

The run button is pretty useless for the time being.

Same experience for me on my first F35 shoot. I've always gone handheld and im used to quick shooting. The first shoot gave me a sore shoulder and hand.
But like you say Hunter, it's worth the pain. Its gettin easier and easier for me with every shoot.

Can't wait to see a few frame grabs Hunter (that's if you are allowed to post any). Just out of interest, did you create a picture profile or were you using S-LOG? Best wishes, Sparky

I've been shooting all this week, and will be for the next four weeks, on a low-budget WWII feature in the North of England. We had a lot of pyrotechnics and things today and the camera has phenomenal highlight handling ability. I have not used any other camera which holds skin tones so well in direct sunlight. I know there are cameras which do, but it's certainly above anything I've used previously (only used the ALEXA in the studio).

If I am allowed to post any, I will put some screengrabs up. The footage is painfully sharp, it looks stunning.

Hey Guys,

Having a little problem w/ my cam / hyperdeck and was wondering if anyone has had this same issue before.

I've got my F 35 going to the hyperdeck and am running a Zacuto Viewfinder via HDMI. When I power it all up it says "Unsupported Video Format VFMT00" on the screen of the Zacuto.
I then tried plugging the camera into my Sony TV via HDMI and it says a similar thing (Unsupported signal etc.)

One thing I can do on BOTH the Zacuto and TV is playback from the Hyperdeck. I just can't get it to work w/ the camera.

Anyone have this problem before or have any suggestions?
