Just got a new camera - Sony F35

I would definitely try another battery/power-source. I had a similar issue on SRW1--plugged an IDX power supply in and it blinked strange errors, complained about the boards being faulty, etc.

Plugged another power supply into it and it was all happy again. What voltage is the camera reporting?

Would definitely unplug the viewfinder any see what you have on the SDI out too. If it reports all boards are ok, makes me wonder.

Best of luck.

Adam, if you post any "I told you so", you may notice a scene similar to this Frankenstein movie in your driveway.

I should confirm as the others have said, that something as simple as a dodgy power supply can suggest terminal issues.

For example, my old F900 if the battery was not up to scratch the camera could appear fine, UNTIL you power the tape deck, when it drew too much current.

Thanks for the tips. Right now I don't have any other batteries than these. Tried two different ones (the same brand/voltage/wH). Nothing different. Camera reports a fresh battery pushing down 16v. I'll have to borrow my friend's Swits again to see if that's what causing the problem.

And yes, as I noted earlier- I went into this with my eyes open. This could have happened regardless of what used camera I bought, F3, F35, whatever. Outside of buying a new piece of kit like the F5 this was always a possibility. A dying piece of equipment is not a trouble unique to this particular model. As for the cost of repairs, well.... we'll see. Sony's service depot prices are $135 per hour. The labor doesn't concern me as much as replacing parts would. There are tiny little circuit board/ribbon parts in the optical block that cost $2000 to replace. Prices go up from there. Thankfuly all the major boards are reporting OK. If the CCD optical block is shot, well that's a different nut to crack. Replacement prices on those are $59,000. There are those replacement ones on eBay for $5000. So there's hope there as well, but even at that price it might make more sense to just get another body. I've decided that if the repair price quote gets too far out of whack I'll pick up an extra body and keep this one for parts. Would that be optimal? No, not really. By then I'll have been F5 prices into things. But c'est la vie. Any "told you so's" would just make me laugh. heh. I got into this knowing it would be an adventure and the adventure has begun in earnest! :)

Balls to the F5. I'll take last year's Ferrari over this year's Ford any day.

Speaking of which, I managed to get a high-res screen cap uploaded, from the tests I did earlier. Key light = 40w bulb in lamp holder. Background light = 1K with CTB and .6 ND on it. Too much light coming out of it!

Bang on - 32mm @ f/2.8 I believe.

We were in a studio, with a full studio lighting rig, but the idea was to teach STUDENTS how to DoP. And student DoPs rarely get a full studio to play with (at least, they don't in the UK). I was trying to give them ideas for a look you could achieve on location.

Hey guys!!! So, tell the truth!!! Who was at Philip Bloom workshop in Canada with their F35? I know it's probably someone from here!!! Haha

Ok, I admit it. But I didn't use it for the team project, wasn't the right tool. So it just sat in the bag :(
Khachik, were you there today?

Justin

yes, there was a guy with an Epic.

The reason I had my F35 was that I shot some scenes for a music video in Miami a few days ago with the F35, and then popped over to Canada for a meeting and the Bloom workshop was happening around the same time, so I thought I'd do some networking (as I wanna move to Canada) So I had my F35 with me anyway. And You can always learn new things, meet people.

Hope you enjoyed Phil's workshop. They are always fun and very informative, and Philip is a great guy.
OMG, every time I come back to this thread, I start to think about investing in F35, but then always change my mind. You guys make me go CRAZY!!!

Ye it was fun. Phillip is a cool guy.

Have fun with your FS700 ITMT, and when you ready for the mission, we'll be here.

Anyone have luck with 4-pin xlr power supply? I have one out of my charger but I don't think it has enough amps- camera seems to work fine but gives low voltage warning. Looking for a way to power everything AC with out buying the $2000 24v power supply...

I don't have a F35, but any pro PS should have a voltage out adjustment, remove the case and there should be a pot near the output. Crank it up a bit and measure with a volt meter. I did this a lot in my ENG camera days, so I could use longer 4pin XLR cables and comp for the voltage drop... Most common application was on a jib.

Er.... perhaps just go in the menu and recalibrate what it classifies as "low power" ???

Maintanence menu...

"12-bit input supported" sounds suspiciously like the unit doesn't record 10-bit. For example, you can feed the cinedeck 12-bit, it just ignores the last two bits

Anyone remember the early "HD compatible" tvs?

You guys see this yet?
http://www.convergent-design.com/Products/Odyssey7.aspx#Specs-21

Convergent Design's new 7" OLED monitor/recorder. Specs say it will handle 2k 444 uncompressed HD QT up to 60fps at up to 12bit. Interesting approach via the "rentable features" idea. Might be an option, but their pricing seems vague at the moment.

This site's got details that I couldn't find on CD's site, but they can be wonky on their details a lot of times, so take it with the usual grain of salt.....

This looks great but who knows when it will be out and working. By the end of summer? By Christmas?
I need a recorder by mid May, and still I haven't found the right one...
