Just got a new camera - Sony F35

I've been very impressed with this camera. I am considering it as an option now. Right now I have the BMCC pre-ordered. I have a few questions though if I were to get the Sony F35.

1: Would I be stuck with the PL mount or is there a lens adapter so I can use affordable lenses?

2: The SW1 recorder it uses takes HDCAM tapes lilke this, correct? http://www.adorama.com/VDMXB124HD.html?gclid=COT309r_qbUCFdSLPAodpTcAdw

3: How does the low light compare to say a Canon T2i? Is it on par, dramatically better? What? I'm curious at what level it's on in this regard.

Thanks! :)

So for all that are interested - Jon Thorn from AJA posted that at first the AJA Ki Pro Quad will only create 10-bit 444 pro res files.

Right now it seems if we are to believe it that the PIX 240 is the only compressed recorder available that will make 12-bit 444 pro res files - so this with a AJA or Blackmagic converter is the cheapest, lightest, smallest way to get to 12-bit 4:4:4:4 files out of the Sony F35. I ordered the AJA converter - will see if it works.

Sound Devices PIX 240 is saying 12-bit.
Gemini says 10-bit.

The AJA unit will only do 10-bit as well.

So we have to really make sure the PIX can truly do 12-bit which it must if they claim it can.

I'm curious if there is a way to find out easily with a test chart.

So, I just shot some stuff at 50i today to see if it could cut well with 24p and it does look great. I'm surprised how good it looks considering it's half res. So I guess until the aja quad is out, slow motion is still possible and decent by shooting 50i.

I'll try to post some footage.

What is this? 1999 all over again? Does it shoot in frame-movie mode too?

My F35 has been sitting in UK customs for over two weeks (coming in from the US) but it has been cleared today! Almost resigned myself to the fact I'd never receive it. Hopefully it should be here tomorrow or the day after so I look forward to sharing some feedback with you. Sparky x

No idea! Wasn't sent with priority postage, so I guess it was just sitting there. And as there was no contact number as such there wasn't anyone I could speak to to chase it either, so I was a little powerless really, hence after two weeks of it sitting there I was resigned to never seeing it! Anyway, apparently cleared customs this morning so hopefully here soon. Best, Sparky

If you're very unlucky, they're trying to find out if you lied to them in order to save on taxes when you said you paid $10K to buy a $250K piece of equipment

Customs, the world over, is a funny place. They have incredible powers of search and seizure. They do troll the internet sometimes when doing their due dilligence on goods coming in. Would they have held it up for this? Unlikely in my view. Good to see it has cleared.

I'm envious of all you F35 owners.

Here you go, some footage shot on 23.976p and 1080i50 (going to the hyperdeck), slowed down to 23,976 and deinterlaced. With people, moving objects and such, I don't notice the loss in resolution unless I go frame by frame and I stare at the screen 2 inches away. Sure, I'd prefer 1080p50 from this camera, but I guess I can live another month with this compromise.

I've been following all the F35 threads for a while now, I'm totally convinced that its a good move you guys have made. Thanks Miguel and everyone else for sharing your info and experiences, its made it easier to make an informed decision that i want to bite the bullet and jump on the F35 bandwagon.

I've managed to find one here locally in Cape Town (but I'm 1000km away from it in Johannesburg) at a rental house. I convinced them to let it go, told them its on Ebay for $8k, They laughed there asses off, They phoned me back the next day and changed their tune and siad I could have it for $9.4K (with Sony EVF CW35 and everything else) I haven't seen it in person, but a cheap 1 hour flight will get me there, but I think its a fantastic deal considering I dont have to ship from overseas.
I just want to know your guys thoughts on things like: support, what if something breaks or malfunctions (suppose insurance, and then if breaks buy another one, they have a few) I understand the F35 is built like a light tank though. How do I know the condition of the sensor is good for a few more years? are there any quick tale telling signs of a bad unit before I buy?

I almost dont care, I just want one. everyone I work with is telling I'm mad. They say things like "Buy a BMCC" . I cant believe how short sighted they are. I keep reminding them that the workflow of RAW is not as easy as they think, and frankly a huge outlay of man hours and fuss with RAW processing to do a job the F35 would do internally for you anyway, and i cant deal with rolling shutter anymore, nor the way most digital cams deal with highlights and anyway, the F35 with an external recorder is in another league. If its good enough for Michael Bay, its good enough for me.

Miguel, I remember you said you tried the Gemini and mentioned a loss in quality? Because it seems thats the way to go for 50P (albeit 10bit max, and huge uncompressed DPX files to boot) , but maybe Pix 240 12bit 444 in 50i for slowmo as youve recently discovered is not half bad? :)
The Pix is much more economic, 12bit 444, but no 50P in 1080.
Seems old school interlaced 50i into slow mo, and twixtor for further over crank is back! (letting my FS700 go, along with 240FPS, but that party trick is getting boring now)
