Just got a new camera - Sony F35

That recorder is one of the reasons why everybody were so excited when the file-based alexa was announced. I wouldn't want to drag that thing around on my shoots, not even for 12 bit 4:4:4 (or was it 10 bit?)

The recorder has many benefits, none of which involve weight or convenience.

444 at 60FPS
880 Mbps
Detachable control panel (great for AC or DIT)
2-HDSI ins for dual-camera (3d)
Up to 12-channels of 24-bit audio
Direct docking to camera (in a studio application, seems reasonable)
No one has talked about it, but triggering record. Works on the SRW-1, but none of the other recorders, so far as I can figure out.

Just some food for thought. (no I'm not an advocate of tape or boat anchors!) :Drogar-Dum(DBG):

One thing I now know is that the pix 240 can do 4:4:4 10 bit pro res. http://nofilmschool.com/2012/12/sound-devices-12-bit-4444-prores-pix-v3-0-firmware/

This is a big breakthru for the SSD recorders.

I know the only options other than this were the Gemini and I don't know if it can do 4:4:4 pro res - it can only do 4:4:4 raw and 1080p 4:2:2 Avid DNXHD compressed. And the Codex which is expensive.

I asked the Atomos guys if the Samurai would be able to do - nope. I don't think they have a 3g hd-sdi input on it.

Also I think the Sony F35 doesn't have 3g sdi out - just dual-link so the PIX 240 won't work with it.

So I think the best bet is the AJA Ki Pro Quad when it comes out. It will give you 4:4:4 Pro Res from a dual link source. Cost 4k, but you can also use it with other camera systems and 4k systems maybe it will work with the Sony F55 and F5 4k abilities as well so it would be a good cost saving device.

I would rather not lug around a toaster. I agree - the toaster recorder made DPs around the world not like the Sony F35. I remember a DP complaining how heavy it was and bulky.

Here comes Macgregor to the rescue.

So we just wait till someone does a dual-link recorder - which I doubt will happen - don't know if the market is there for it. But who knows. Maybe the AJA Ki Pro Quad can do it.

There are cables that combine dual link into 3g sdi.

Actually I am waiting on the Aja Quad as the final solution for my camera. And I just got this reply today on the email:

Miguel,
Thank you for your interest in the products of AJA Video.
We are getting closer to releasing the KiPro Quad but as yet we do not have a specific release date.
As with any significantly advanced technology it is most often difficult to forecast exactly when a product will be market ready. AJA will not release a product until it is ready. To that end we are getting closer to the release of the Ki Pro Quad but a specific availability date is not yet available. Please periodically check our website for more details.

Best regards,

Brian

I don't think a cable will suffice. You need a multiplexer like the AJA 3GM. I'm getting one, because you can do other cool things with it, like combine two dual-link signals (that are genlocked) into monitors, like FSI and get 3G Level B monitoring, with Picture-by-Picture, PIP, POP, etc.

If it works as expected, goodbye Samurai, hello Pix240. I'd like a KiPro Quad, but next Neveruary isn't satisfactory for me. :nads:

i feel though that having an extra piece of hardware processing dual link to 3g is kind of iffy to get to work with the pix 240.
also i was getting a lot of macroblocking with the pix 240 when I had it. that was a while ago so they probably fixed that.

but maybe Neveruary is around the corner

Not convinced that 4:4:4 is worth all the extra resources needed (for that I do). Macro-blocking is game-over though--not cool.
I do know that SoundDevices is a well-respected company for support and quality, so I'd image that they fixed/resolved it.

FedEx just denied my claim without giving me a proper explanation, and they did it the exact minute they closed for the day. I've been trying to call them all day, but they always had an excuse and said they'd call me back. Of course they didn't...

Sucks!

Blow it up! Get a facebook page up or something for it. Get members of this forum to post comments in support of your cause. Put it out there, get their attention. You will get paid.

Researching a little more - see that according to this thread, the "chips" in the Panavision Genesis and the Sony F35 are the same: http://www.cinematography.com/index.php?showtopic=33638
the electronics are different. Whatever that means. :)

When you think of all the amazing films and tv shows shot with the Genesis you know that you can grab a camera for around 10-15k that has that same potential - that's mind-blowing.

Of course, let's not forgot the words of Adam - it's not always the shoes, its the basketball player.

But having a nice camera that handles high lights and mixed lighting that well certainly help image making.

It would be more like if you have a high powered drill you are going to be able to drill in some screws really quickly and very well vs a manual drill.

Compared to the Genesis, the F35 has a bit more dynamic range in the highlights, a cleaner signal, and many more features such as all the hypergammas, LUT management, mount metadata, and variable ISOs. The Genesis, unless I'm mistaken, can only deliver 10bit, while the F35 has a 12 bit output. The F35 is basically 2-3 years more advance than the Genesis but of course it inherits the same technology.

But it's still interesting to see that the Genesis is still being used, like in the movie Ted, from last year.

BTW, you should all watch these videos:

Miguel, could you post some graded material with human faces, please, look forward to that.

PS
Actually never mind, downloading your material in mp4, from the first pages, will transcode it to prores, will see what happens!) cheers.)

I looked at https://vimeo.com/27827403, wrote a comment in video page, in first example A film, B Genesis, right?

+1

That series by John Galt made a huge difference to my understanding of shooting motion pictures with digital cameras, what matters in an image and what doesn't, and why certain things look like film and others don't.

Very nice! Now get us some sample footage with those lovely UPs of yours!

Viddovation,

could you describe your setup, what it cost you,
I am considering also F35, got an offer on FC35W and Codex recorder, at quoted price, thinking of F55, what would be a difference between the two?!
Saw you other thread, thank you for your thoughts!
