Just got a new camera - Sony F35

May I ask why, Sparky? Too cumbersome? I'm realizing that I'm not using my own as much as I expected; opting for Red Epic and (latest) a C300 instead, because of weight. Do love it dearly though, and in theory it would be my first priority.

I love the image from it but I'm just not using it enough, because of its size really. I could put the money towards a lens perhaps which would be a good investment.

In other news, I've decided to hang onto mine--after using it in our studio, I just can't give it up. It really is suited perfectly for studio use (of course, since this is what it was made for), and it's a joy to use on a jib. Hang in there everyone! This wasn't some dvxfad.

@jusgorilla: I thought it would be possible with a recorder with a screen on it. Otherwise the EVF/monitor has its own port on the camera correct? The camera essentially stores no footage if used with a recorder, so they only way I could think of to perform playback with a hyperdeck shuttle is to unplug the monitor's hd-sdi from the side port and plug it into the sdi-out on the hyperdeck whenever I want to see what I shot again? Thanks.

@dangtienanh: The hyperdeck has passthrough SDI so you can go from F35>Hyperdeck>Monitor and while recording it will show you a live image; as soon as you hit a playback button it will display that on the output, so all good!

Also of note if your monitor is HDMI only it can convert SDI to HDMI (& vice-versa). Been quite pleased with the little thing so far, really good bang for the buck.

On another note, I'm never ever ever selling my F35. :-)

Preping for a shoot this week. Cooke S4. Will post images.

By the way, there seems to be a F35 on ebay for $6 right now...

I'd be careful with that one, guys! The same pic has been used by many different sellers over the past year, but the particular camera was definitely sold in January by the same seller as I bought mine from.

Hello all. Here are a couple of pics of my F35 rig I may move on.

I had a Hawkwoods V-LOK battery plate build onto the interface box so you can just pop battery onto the back and off you go. I will also include a SAMURAI as well, as this is a great way of recording the footage - the method I use. The F35 doesn't have a Nikon mount but the original PL mount - I have been using my RED 17-50mm lens with it. Let me know if you have any other questions or are interested. I am based in the UK.

It's in perfect working order - I have had zero issues with it, it's just that it's not getting enough use at the moment.

Thanks, Sparky

BTW, would anyone be interested in my Nikon mount front plate? Since I bought some PL glass I don't think I'll be using it much.

To keep all up to date, I currently have work on which doesn't need the F35 so I am using the break to do some much-needed mods.

Most significantly, I have pulled apart my interface box and I am building it into my plate which supports the cinedeck. So, my interface box is now integrated and that shaves a handy inch and a half off the top of the camera! Also looks much, much neater!

That sounds awesome James!

Wonder if there is a way to build in an extra dual link sdi without buying an extra IF box, so we can get 50P at 12bit 444?
The Odyssey 7Q appears to be able to record the 50P in 12nit 444 soon enough if we had quad link sdi.

Has anyone confirmed whether the Odyssey can record the 12 bit signal yet? I have a Gemini 444, and the current firmware doesn't recognize Sony's PsF scheme on 12 bit (Convergent has said they'd look into in future firmware revisions after finish the programming on the Odyssey) I figure the Odyssey shares a similar fpga and will probably have the same issues unless it's specifically addressed in firmware.

Although it is probably hypothetically possible, I think the reality is that it will be way too much effort. The F35 has a handshake protocol on it which I think is a closely guarded Sony secret. When I pulled apart the IF box, the sdi cables go through a circuit board which I imagine "unlocks" the signal. I don't want to try soldering the two cables together without the circuit board because I'm pretty sure it won't work. The signal is in there somewhere because the Codex and Sony's SR deck can get the full signal from just one of the docks but how they do that we may never know!

However, if you bought another IF box I could easily make it into a very low-profile affair for you for not a huge cost.

Is everyone pretty much using the sony viewfinder with the f35? How well does it fuction w/ aftermarket monitors, & are you able to access menu and other features?

I'm using the sony VF.
3rd party EVF are just fine, and yes, you can send the menu overlays/709 LUT via SDI monitor out 1&2 (these only output 10bit 422 max) on the body edge, but not the IF Box SDI's A&B, they are clean 10bit/12bit 422/444 with no overlays possible.
