Just got a new camera - Sony F35

Thanks Grug. I dont have a sketch of the plan, but an easy setup:

4 x 2.4K space lights (very soft top lights with silk skirts) for Key light
3 x 2k Arri tungstens with chimera (soft box cases) at a distance, for fill.
Thats it.

Thanks Justin. Did you have the space lights fairly evenly spread across the room, or was the focus positioning them directly above groups of tables?

I put them directly where I wanted focus, with the soft boxes behind camera at about 9ft high angled down on dimmers for a little fill. I also used a parkan with diffusion high up on a stage wall for the main artist fill.

Thanks for the heads up guys - I just got an update from Barrett. My EOS mount front plate is nearing the final stages. There's no going back to the PL with the EOS mount, but I've got tons of options (especially my Takumars that are the reason I wanted EOS in the first place). Heck there's even multiple options for Cine glass with an EOS mount in this day and age. Crazy.

Updated to add pics of the final work. It's on it's way back. Should be here some time Monday and Tuesday I've got some macro stuff I'm planning on shooting on it.

I never thought I'd see the day! I'm still happy with my Nikon mount, but this is probably a big factor to many potential buyers who already own a set of canon glass.

Correct. No aperture control. For my purposes (old converted M42 lenses, Cine Rokinons, and if the budget ever allows Cine glass with EF mounts) it was perfect. If the M42 could have been converted to Nikon, I probably would have gone that route, but the flange distance doesn't allow it and since my favorite lenses are my complete set of Takumars, that was where I went.

The EF mount cannot be converted back to PL, but Canon, Zeiss, and Schneider (I think) all have Cine glass with an EF mount.

Thanks for this thread Miguel, you kicked off something very very positive:) I came in very late but guess its still valid today. Haven´t been able to read all posts yet...

On the recorders matter, please help me out here. I went through 166 pages and while trying to keep track of the info, I think my brain died a little.

- Hyperdeck Shuttle: 10 bit 422 fine up to 30p? From that up we have interlaced since the recorder's hardware simply can't handle it?
- PIX 240i: with new firmware update, will do 12 bit 444 fine (needs multiplexer) with 24p and 25p? Is there any slow mo option at all? Like 50p 10bit 422 or even 8 bit?
- Kipro Quad: 12 bit 444? slow motion? I think Mac is the only person in this thread to have plugged it into the F35. Mac please?
- Odyssey 7 and 7Q: The 7Q was released in September correct? Any luck teaming it up with the F35? The price seems nice for what it has, I need a monitor too so. On its specs sheet it says will do DNxHD and I believe DNxHD maxes out at 10 bit correct? I don't really care for any other uncompressed options, hence I don't really looked into the Gemini.
- Cinedeck EX: tons of codecs, 12 bit 444 ok but 50p is at 8 bit 422 right?
- Any other options? Like Atomos Ninja/Samurai?

Looking at McGregor's work from the Hyperdeck Shuttle, I don't think I'd need more than that, but just for the sake of my info thirst, please help me out here.

Sorry if I might sound short and rude and if my grammar sucks. Just spent the whole Sunday going through 166 pages and it's 7 in the morning now--I need to call in sick and go to bed.

Thank y'all A LOT in advance. I'm like inches close to grabbing one F35 myself.

PS: Some member mentioned a not-fully-functioning F35 being sold from Washington state. There're two (best priced) out of 4 up on ebay now and they're all from Washington. Could you provide a serial number so I can cross check with the seller? I think that camera has been listed there for months. Is it because people are avoiding them or just that the love for the f35 is already dying :)?

I'm using the ATOMOS Samurai Blade and it's working great for me. It's 10 bit 4:2:2 in various flavors of ProRes and DNxHD. It's a decent monitor, struggles in bright Texas sun, but is otherwise good. It has built in scopes, exposure/focus assist, and and audio monitoring, if you're recording audio to the camera.

dangtienanh, well read, you are on the right path.

hypershuttle best bang for buck so far. I wouldn't shoot 50i on it for slow mo, it's ok for long focals but sux balls on wides with movement, and a ball ache in post mixed with glorious "P" footage. Honestly well used optical slomo like twixtor is more rewarding.

ive used the cinedeck ex extensively and had a wonderful yet buggy experience before I finally killed it on a shoot (heavy, power hungry, hard to mount comfortably, long boot times, 50p only 8 bit)

im on the shuttle at tho mo and it's great (minus real slo mo) and I'm waiting for my 7Q to arrive.

check take2films in London, they did have good F35's for a steal.

Thank you CaptainSKA and Jusgorilla. Given the prices of both unit I think I'm pretty set on the Hyperdeck Shuttle as a starting option. Still waiting for news from the Odyssey though, please keep all of posted Jusgorilla.

Regarding take2films in London, unfortunately I'm based in the States, but do have several friends over the pond though, one of them visiting me in a month. Now if you don't mind pointing me to the correct person/department to contact that'd be great. I still see F35 on their rental catalogue.

Thanks again people!

I bought mine from the SA office here, but they told me their branch in London has some. I wouldn't know who exactly to speak to. But I was gonna buy a second body, and the guys here from take2films offered one from London for $6000 (with IF box).
So there's a gauge on price point.

Hey dangtienanh,
I'm local to the guy selling the F35 here in Washington. If you like I can look into setting up a meeting to inspect one of the units that you're interested in. Being an F35 owner I think I have a decent idea of what to look out for. I can bring some of my accessories to test it out. I'm shooting to an Atomos Samurai, so I can even grab some test footage if I can find a PL lens to borrow (sold all my PL glass).

Fraud? on eBay involving the F35

Fraud? on eBay involving the F35

An F35 showed up on eBay today that sounded too good to be true, so I did some checking....

The seller had perfect feedback (205 of them over 5 years)....all by selling WEDDING CAKE FLOWERS for the last 5 years. Nothing but wedding cake flowers.

Then this morning the account posts a 2 year old F35 with low mileage and little use (first clue somethings up). As I always do I clicked to see what else they were selling. And I get 1400+ auctions of high end $5,000+ merchandise, all on 24 hour auctions.

So they went from selling wedding cake flowers to selling high end unrelated equipment, overnight. Tractors, guitars, McIntosh Amps, F35 cameras, RED Scarlets.

So I applied for and was given the secret ebay customer service number (and asked not to share that "customer service" phone number with other people) and a one-time secret access code number (for the privilege of being able to talk to a human being at eBay.) and I called.

When I explained the situation to the person (who was in a land far far away), he said he would fill out a form. I convinced him to talk to a supervisor by mentioning that the total for all the merchandise totaled into the millions of dollars. He finally saw the gravity of the situation and immediately pulled down all of the sellers auctions.

Sad that eBay is under such attacks by criminals. I wonder what is REALLY GOING ON that the public doesn't know about?

Anyway, no F35 for me, yet...Moral of the story? Buy your F35 locally, or from a seller who has been properly vouched for by someone you trust.

I managed a screen capture before eBay took it down.

Spending that kind of money you always have to be careful but you don't have to be paranoid. I always check what else they are selling etc. It's normal practice. With something like this you can also find out what company they work for if any, talk to them personally etc etc. Once you are satisfied they seem legit then pay them only thorough paypal. You are protected if somehow things go south. But common sense will protect you most of the time- I've seen that photo before so that would have had me suspicious straight away...

sorry for the off topic. Being overly fearful of being ripped off buying and selling online is a bug bear of mine.

Funny I ran into another F35 listing with that exact photo (pulled from Google) of a seller who has 2000+ positive feedbacks selling mail alert flags. He was selling 3 'brand new' F35s for $2000 each, BIN. But he also said in the description box telling people not to hit Buy It Now but sending him an email instead. I went ahead and used an trash email address I've had since middle school and troll'ed the heck out of him. In the meantime I reported Fraudulent to ebay too and the listing was pulled within 12 hours. I went ahead and asked him what had happened to his listing and he said he pulled it to 'reserve it for me'.

Keithlango: That's very nice of you to offer such a big favor. Thanks alot. However I'm still waiting on the deal with take2films Jusgorilla referred me to. If that doesn't go through then I'll definitely going to bother you and your willingness to help :D

One small question for those who use the Hyperdeck shuttle: how do you do playback? Apparently it doesn't have a built in monitor. Is a 2nd monitor needed? Thanks.
