Just got a new camera - Sony F35

Got any motion? :)

Those look sick Mac! What LUTs?

I haven't been able to shoot anything on mine yet. Its in pieces on my desk and the front plate is currently being bored out :/

Mac you give me something to aspire to. Are you shooting on hyperdeck dnx still?

Found the perfect f35 shoulder rig at NAB this year, they told me it fit the f65, which should also fit the f35 right? Its expensive but you get 15mm, 19mm, shoulder pad and sliding base.

Jo Kami your pad looks sweet too.

Finally my backordered sigma 1.8 18-35 shipped. I will post some tests once i get it, although last weekend i shot a short at 2.8 and focus was a pain on the nikon lenses with such a short throw.

Mmmm.... so very filmic.

Full of imperfections, but feels so natural for something with digits and volts rather than film behind the lens.

Hahaha and I follow you!
Seriously, the footage from this short looks pretty good. Just wait a couple more weeks and I'll show bits

I just finished shooting a short last weekend. All F35. Throw a LUT into it and there you go --> it looks like a movie.

Macgregor, thanks for the LUT development since it also makes it possible to use this on the F3, as they share the same slog.

It is maybe possible now to get "good look" out of $6000 Sony camera, the F3. This thread thanks to you:

Guys anyone have an idea what this Magenta/purple fringing is caused by? CA?(but no green, Barry Green says CA has magenta AND green)

The more I look at it, the more it looks codec related. purple fringing from CA would appear in more places, not only in isolated parts of the frame?

Hard to say, I don't think CA is normal in more center part of an image. Can you test that same lens against another lens in similar situation?

I'm gonna test, but I think its a lens issue, as I've only ever seen this issue, with this lens (Nikon17-55 wide open at 2.8)

Hi Justin,
Can you please post a single frame of the original DPX?
Would like to check out the original file, it still feels like axial CA to me.

CA in the middle of a picture is odd, but not impossible.

Only way to confirm is to check against other lenses in the same scenario.

Just want to confirm with current F35 owners some info I came across. The F35 has no way to monitor audio?

What about other things such as focus assist?

I wont even ask about waveform and histogram as I'm pretty sure it wont have that.

Thanks guys.

I've never really known CA to be anything but a lens related issue. Though it can be exacerbated by extremely high contrast edges causing colour artifacting. Could be a combination of both in that frame grab.

The F35 camera body does not have any sort of built-in microphone, audio inputs, or dedicated audio outputs.
The IF box adds two XLR audio inputs, that can be set individually at line, mic, or +48. However, there is no further audio level adjustment or headphone/return feed output on the IF box or camera body.

Your video recorder may offer you some of the audio features otherwise missing from the F35.

It's worth remembering the F35 was selling as a set with it's recorder for $250k, and was effectively limited to film set which would have a dedicated sound crew recording separately - meaning the camera only really ever needed a scratch audio feed, since the externally recorded audio would be linked later to dailies.

As for the visual features you're asking about, those really are all things that depend on the viewfinder. The Sony viewfinder I have does offer peaking and magnification for focus assist. It also has zebras. My viewfinder doesn't have a waveform or histogram. If those things matter to you, look for them in the monitor/recorder you buy.

Vid nailed it. This thing wasn't designed for ENG, run & gun or owner operators (they had the EX1 etc. for that market). So no audio monitoring from cam itself. But if you're using an external recorder most of those have audio monitoring. I'm able to monitor audio from my Samurai. The audio signal comes over the SDI out of the IF box from the camera. If you shoot without the IF box then you won't have any audio at all because the SDI monitor feed is mute. Since all I shoot is narrative, most times I'm not even recording audio in my F35 (I use sound techs and record audio separately). Sometimes I have a cheapo shotgun on the camera so that I can record scratch reference audio in the video file and use PluralEyes for audio syncing instead of doing it manually for each shot from the slate, but that's about as far as audio in the F35 goes for me. I never bother monitoring that.

As for the exposure & focus tools, the Sony HDVF C30W viewfinder has peaking, zebras and 1:1 magnification. You set the zebras in the F35 menus on camera and can toggle them on/off on the viewfinder itself via small switches, or you can turn them on/off on page V05 of the F35 menu. I seem to recall the C35W viewfinder having the same functionality, as well. If you feed the SDI monitor output to a 3rd party viewfinder or monitor the zebras show up, but peaking etc. is whatever the 3rd party offers. If you are recording the monitor feed, you'll record the zebras, though (along with any other monitoring overlay like aspect letterbox bars, menus, MLUTs, FPS info, etc.) so don't forget to turn the zebras off on page V05 of the menu. I set my zebra to type 1 to 38% IRE for exposing my grey card for sLog. In addition I use the Samurai's false color as a primary exposure tool (try to expose skin in the grey/peach area), along with my light meter readings. I don't have the Samurai Blade so no waveform. But I like using false color because for me it's easier to read quickly. Waveforms aren't as easy to decypher what's what. At least not to me.
