Just getting kit started....

So I am just getting my field recording kit together. I have a 702t have 302 ordered, but I am looking for a boom mic. I plan to go with Sennheiser for my lav mic option which will where most my money goes. I do not have much to spend now, I am looking at the Rode NTG-3. I am just wondering if anyone has used it and what they think?

It's too soon to tell as it just hit the market and there's not a lot of user experience to draw on, myself included - anything I say is second hand. But from those who have used it, I've heard it's a mic to be reconned with, if not a 416 killer, at least a contender. If the price of the Rode was in my budget and the Senn wasn't, based on the reviews I've read I wouldn't feel ashamed to list it in my kit. What I've heard is the bass is a little light compared to the 416 and the pattern a little less sharply defined (not necessarily a bad thing when shooting dramatic dialog).

At that price point ($699 at B&H) why not look for a used 416? You could actually save money and get a proven workhorse.

I just reviewed it for TV Technology.

The NTG-3 is a contender. This is an RF condenser, similar circuitry to that of the 416 (which debuted in 1974). Very solidly built.

As Steve said (Hi Steve) lighter on the bottom, a bit wider pattern, but that may make it better for two-shots.

B&H has it solo or in some kits

PS: The TLM 67 arrived yesterday. VERY NICE!

Please tell me that with gear that good (702T+302) that you're at least getting a capable hyper (CK93 at a minimum)

I do plan to get more and more gear but I am just starting so want to get a good shotgun and lavalier set. But please make a list of stuff I should get because the Video Production place that just gave me a free studio wants me to do all their sound. All they want to know what mics we need. They plan to do commercials, film, just about everything. We just got a Red Cam, so we are working on getting the sound part built and equiped. Until now I have just been doing post production sound so just getting into onlocation. I just have 003 LE rig right now but we are also talking about upgrading pretty fast to HD. So all helpful information is wanted.
