Just bought hvx200a

I just dumped 7000 on an hvx 200a a 32gb p2 card and a protection plan. Just wanted to make sure I had everything I need to capture to a mac pro. Can I do it with firewire or is it complex? What would you recomend to a new user who has a job in under a week. I need to figure it out before the job obviously.
thanks

You can mount the cards using the cam through Firewire and copy the full p2 volume to your HDD for ingesting into FCP.

Just observe proper firewire procedures for mounting the cam

The "card" readers are two: p2 store and the five slot reader.

The latter runs about $2k.

Just be very careful to not have the cam powered on when you attach it via FW, and write protect the p2 cards.

Then when you finish copying, eject the p2 volume, turn off the cam, count to five and then disconnect the FW cable.

remember remember remember - ALWAYS have the camera turned OFF before connecting and disconnecting the live firewire cable from your computer. or you will be likely to fry your firewire port

and you'll have to download the p2 drivers for your mac, but thats a brezze. go here:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the manual tells you to turn on the cam, and then connect the computer end of the firewire to your system.

You do NOT want to connect the Firewire cable from your comp to your camera if the cam's already on. Trust us on this one - make sure the camera's off before you connect.

ive never heard of that jimmy - ive been living the "power off the camera before plugging/unplugging" rule for over a year and my gear works perfectly

What the hell? I don't have a panny, but this is the first I've heard of a FW port frying due to connecting when the camera's on. Jesus.., do any other HD cameras have this issue? I've been using a GL2 for a while now and I've never heard of this problem before.

Sounds like a huge design flaw to me.

Every camera can be subject to it, if you're plugging into a 6-pin port on the computer. It's not a Panasonic thing, it has to do with plugging in 6-pin connectors backwards which somehow shorts out and blows the firewire port on the camera. Happens to Sonys, Canons, Panasonics, JVCs, you can find reports of it all over the web.

6-pin ports carry power. 4-pin to 4-pin will never have an issue, but 6-pin to 6-pin, or 6-pin to 4-pin, can cause the problem. It appears to be when someone's trying to plug in the cable and they have the 6-pin side backwards and they get it close enough to short out the pins. It's a good idea to make sure your camera is NOT plugged in until your 6-pin connector is properly attached.
