Just bought a used HVX200...need help

No concerns with the "used" factor...the camera is in mint condition and has been hardly used. This is a case of me getting used to the new technologies... I am having trouble figuring out how to get footage from P2 onto my PC to edit in Avid Xpress Pro HD. Can this not be done? I thought I would be able to transfer the files via IEEE1394? No? I've searched this site and can't come up with a solution. My P2 cards do not "mount" as a new drive. As this is a used unit, I did not receive a CD of any drivers or anything...will this be required?

The camera I bought also came with a FS100 if this creates an easier method.

Thanks,
Craig

You can downoad the drivers from panasonics website. There is a useful links sticky somewhere in the hvx section that will take you where you need to go...

You will need drivers installed on your computer. You just check the ones you want, and make sure you follow the directions. People have trouble sometimes because they don't follow the directions.

If you have a pcmcia slot on your computer/laptop, you can just stick the p2 card in there and offload that way, or edit off the card (if Avid supports editing straight off the card. I'm pretty sure it does). That's the best, fastest way to do it.

For the desktop there are several pci to pcmcia cards available that will work with p2 cards. make sure it is 32 bit pcmcia. They all load in the back though. But, there is one I have seen mentioned that is a front loading one. Don't know if anyone tried it though.

Those range in price from 25-150 bucks.

You should be able to 'mount' your firestore to your pc the same way you would the camera, and offload your footage.

Thanks for the info... I will look for a PCI to PCMCIA card tomorrow. This isn't a PCI-E card is it? I don't think I have a spare PCI-E slot on my motherboard.
...in conclusion to your first response then, will I, (after driver downloads) be able to copy files from my P2 card (in the HVX200) onto my PC desktop?

I'm in dial up land at the moment and that page wasn't loading well...

But, yes... drivers will allow you to offload, view, etc. your p2 footage.

If you are using a pcmcia adapter, you will need a formated (in camera) p2 card inserted into your pcmcia slot when you install the p2 drivers. There's different ones.... one for firewire, one for usb, one for pcmcia, etc, etc. You pick the ones you need.

If you want a good pci-->pcmcia adapter, here is one from Spec-Comm.

Like I said the prices vary on them.... And, I'm sure the quality will (generally) vary with the price as well...

You can search around on www.newegg.com for some others. Make sure they support Type II 32bit PCMCIA.

Or, just go with the one from Spec-Comm above. Spec-Comm is a great company to deal with...

I've looked at items on Newegg before and once tried buying but I got notice that they do not sell to Canada. This was likely 6 months ago so I can check again...but I sure hope they do start soon as they have lots to offer.
