Hi guys,

New to the hack and also DSLRs in general, upgrading from the DVX. I've searched this section for a while and am still somewhat confused about the hack, so please be gentle. I love filmmaking and I know the images from the GH13 are what I'm after, but I'm, shall we say, "technically challenged".

I've just bought a hacked GH1 off ebay, and am awaiting its arrival. The seller - who has a 100% feedback rating - has said the camera currently has "C" settings on it. I live in Australia, and bought the camera in Australia, so I assume it is the PAL version.

My questions are:

* When it arrives, how do I know the hack has been installed on it. Is there an easy way to tell?

* I have a Transcend 16GB class 6 card - is this sufficient or do I need a class 10?

* I want to shoot 25P, what are the best settings for this?

* Can someone plaese explain how and why "neoscene pulldown" was used on this clip, and how I can get my settings as close to these as possible (awesome clip):

MANY THANKS in advance!

Easiest way to tell camera is hacked is to check version number. If it says 0.0 then it is hacked. However this require the original seller to apply Version Compare Patch. Otherwise you need to check the clip properties or see additional menu items are present. Best way will be to hack yourself which fairly simple and there are some video tutorials around.

Class 10 cards would be required if you want to shoot FHD with high bit rates.

The best 25p settings depend on what you need and also depend on the scene, bitrates, cardn on tripod or hand held, motion or static scene etc . 25p has been creating problems especially on high bit rate clips. I have been using 25p risking an occasional crash and been a happy customer.

You can avoid pulldown if you shoot 25p as it is required for 50i or 60i clips which is what an unhacked GH1 will create depending on PAL/NTSC

Thanks Black Ste! How do I check clip properties and what additional items are normally present?

not sure what you have on your system to play your clips straight from the card. i like to use the free SplashLite player to play the files right off the card, as it gives you real time bitrates as your clip plays. If you have finely detailed clips, your bitrates will be much higher than the 17Mbs maximum of an unhacked unit. that's a start.

Thanks Chris! Have an i7 on order too, but camera should get here first. Don't think my current pentium 4 could cope lol!

Have a miniHDMI cable though to my HD TV...would I be able to tell the hack just by the quality of the image?

Many thanks. PS like the clips of your daughter, have 2 of my own, she's very cute! And the footage looks fantastic!

well, to be honest, hdmi playback isn't the most reliable way to judge. it'll look nice, but it won't tell you anything. having a player on your PC that can give you extra info is more reliable. you'll want to analyze your clips straight off the card if you want accurate info.

and thanks for watching my videos :-) i appeciate the compliments! i have another daughter, now 5 days old...stay tuned!
