Just bought a DVX100

So I just bought this DVX100A, it is my first real camera. I am a bit worried because there is this weird clicking/knocking noise when I tilt it back and forth. Should I be concerned? Also how to make it look like film?

Thanks,
Adam

Hi Adam,

When that particular camera model is OFF, the OIS (stabilizer gizmo) will make noise when camera is moved. Noise should cease when camera is powered ON. How to make it look like fiml? Shoot in 24p to start with.

Thanks

Jeff

It's 2005 all over again at dvxuser :).

It's funny because I still have ag hmc150 cameras which also have the famous click clunk sound. So I think about this age old question each time I use them

I'm thinking he's just joking.

I sincerely appreciate everyone who responded to this. Just want to give some old timers a bit of Nostalgia. While I did just buy another DVX100A, I am definitely familiar with the clicking noise. I through in the film question for good measure. I do intend on shooting some things though in an attempt to get a 16mm look. Will post up with my results

SHARBOR is correct about the noise, completely normal. I remember when I got my first DVX in 2005 and had the same worry. As for making it look like film, shoot at 24pa, use the cine gammas or just gamma if its the 100 and expose using your zebras. I always use to crush the blacks in the master ped, you loose information in the shadows but the signal looks richer.. i also always underexposed DV by a stop or so and if it was too dark i just pulled it up in post. Watch films shot on DV and listen to the commentarys on the DVDs of how the filmmakers got the look they did. Back when i was first starting with film, most DV films were being shot on the Sony PD150 (pal version) and then transferred to 35mm (this was 2001ish time). One of the best looking DVX films ever made was a film called November starring courtney cox. There is a fantastic commentary on that DVD where the cinematographer talks about how she shot the film with the DVX100.

On another note... i kind of hope Mini DV Cameras make a comeback like Vinyl did with music. Mini DV and Digibeta ruled!

Hey ShadowProd,
Have I complimented already on this short? That is impressive DVX footage. Great job.

I have had mine storage for about 5-6 years now, I’ve been getting the itch again and thought about upgrading, but it’s hard to find something cheap, and have all the physical controls I enjoy on the dvx :p

I can't think of another camera that has had such a following.

Really I think its def the most popular among indie filmmakers pre-HDSLR BS. All the youngins now do not know how good we had it back then honestly. Also, 24p wouldn't be standard in all cameras, even phones now if it wasnt for Sony with the F900 and then Panasonic with the DVX100 bringing 24p to the mid to low markets. Its really amazing just what some cameras really pushed forward.. the F900 began digital 24p cinematography.. the varicam brought vari frame rate.. the dvx brought 24fps to consumers and prosumers.. the red one brought 4K.. crazy

It's not crazy...someone was eventually going to do it sooner rather than later.

And not many young people would want to use the DVX100 and others (learning on film is one thing). Many of us appreciate the older cameras because we lived through them, but the quality is unusable for most today.

For $3K (maybe $6K in today’s $$$), you got a full solution camcorder with video that was beyond what TV’s could really even display.

Fast forward to today.... ugh.... what is camera?

I’d like something with ergonomics for video...

4K

Um, sure, but i don’t need that yet. Maybe an extra stop in the highlights, instead?

4K

Well, it is nice, but what would be nicer is internal ND filters

4K!

Ok, sure, yes. Thank you. That is very cool. But i am noticing that this is actually just super sampled HD. Do you have anything that is actually...

4K!!!!!!’n

Oh, oh my. Nevermind. Hmm, maybe there is a bitrate that works well, something between 17mb and 500mb ?

4K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got it. Hmm, well, could we at least have some 4K screens?

8K.
