Just Another 7D test - Low light

I just wanted to post this for those people trying to decide if they want the 7D or not, I know looking around at samples shot with the 7D helped me out a great deal in deciding. I still want to get my hands on the 5D MII and try that out too.

Here's a test we did with the Canon 7D to test its low light capabilities out.

We used L lenses, had a small crew, and shot it within a few hours one night.

Having owned the HVX, which didn't have the greatest low light abilities, it was a pleasure to see what the 7D could do in low light.

Needless to say, we were quite impressed with the low light abilities of the camera and now we feel confidant about suggesting this option to clients.

The one negative we've found, which is discussed in great deal all over the place, is the "Jello effect" and the rolling shutter.

I enjoyed watching the trailer... although I'd hesitate to call any video out of a 7d a RAW file. :)

What ISO were you set at? What F-Stop? Only the first and last shots have something that appears in total focus.
 
Hi Ryan.. Sorry for the delay in answering you, I didn't get a notification of a post. And thanks.

I hear you about calling it a "raw" file :) How about the unaltered file.

The "hook" and "running" shots were just quick screen grabs taken at the beginning of the shots, which intentionally began with a softer focus to in focus mid shot. The "Looking at hook" shot had too much unintentional motion blur because of the shutter speed we were using.

I don't have the files with me to double check, which I will later, but if I recall correctly we were at 800iso. We primarily stayed at an f2.8, going down to an f1.4 for a few select shots.

Thanks, we had a couple of great lighting guys that helped us out with the look.

We shot it in approx. 100 yard tunnel in the middle of a golf course.

The interior was lit mostly by the lights already on the wall, which we put ND gels on to bring them down a bit to get more contrast. If you look at the "looking at hook" shot, you can actually see a little bit of the ND gel on the bottom of the light. Whoops. :) In addition, we had a lantern to provide some soft fill light.

Also, on one end of the tunnel I believe it was a 2k on a flicker box. The other end had a 1k with blue gels.

Not having access to tappable electricity, we ran the 2k, 1k, and lantern off of generators. Good thing gas isn't $5.00 a gallon still:)

Unfortunately for the posted version the audio is kind of hacked together. We had someone do a great sound design pass, but couldn't use the entire mix for the posted version because of copyright issues with some of the sounds in the mix.

So, the posted version is part sound design with custom sound effects from years of design work, plus nat sound from the shoot to cover up some of the audio we could not post online.

What iso range where you set on?
Is there any certain picture style you like?
How did you manage not to get that much black noise from the camera?
