just about to buy my first dslr

It's very simple. The base ISO is 200. If you set ISO to 200, you will be essentially at 0dB. Goes something like this:

ISO 200 - 0dB
ISO 400 - +6dB
ISO 800 - +12dB
ISO 1600 - +18dB
ISO 3200 - +24dB
ISO 6400 - +32dB

Unless you have AUTO ISO selected, the ISO/"gain" will not change on you and in any case should be displayed on the LCD. You should try some of the ISOs higher than 200. The T2i will be a lot less noisy than your HV30.

Thanks a lot !

After playing around a little more with the T2i, it has a sharper lcd than my 7D, it was easier to focus with it using my zfinder, so here is one advantage of the cheaper model over the more expensive one.

Where did you get this scale? In a standard decibel scale, an increase of 3 dB results in a doubling of power or intensity. So shouldn't each ISO stop only add 3 dB?
