I have one on order and also tell you more when it arrives. I wont give up dual recording but if it works I don't have to sync in post which will save me some time.
Well. Soon as I can figure out how to delete the right audio track only in premiere or soundbooth I can't say much. Except that i wished JL would also include an adjusted battery tray because mine can't close now.
cons:
- battery tray does not close. It fits fairly snug but there is a chance it could come loose and cut power to the Juicedlink unit itself.
- because of the signal being injected into the camera you will not be able to review shots you just took with clean audio. There will a fairly loud, constant noise, similar to not having cable on a tv.
- Having to "modify" the battery tray. Should have come with a redesigned battery tray so you don't have to fumble with this.
pros:
- the headphone jack is an awesome addition. Especially considering, it recalibrates when the "AGC Disable" is turned on. In other words, since the audio from the mic has been readjusted, the headphone jack adjusts its volume, accordingly. It isn't EXACTLY what the camera will hear, but I believe it tries to come close.
- better way of disabling the AGC. Just delete the right audio track in your NLE and it's gone. To set the record straight, it DEFINITELY injects a sound into your camera. But only into the Right side so it is DEFINITELY removed in post. Unlike the Beachtek.
pet peeves:
- One of the screws on the JL was over-tightened and I stripped it. The other screws are not as tight for some reason.
- The GH1 lcd cannot open and close while the DN101 is attached. It gets in the way.
You are right. Just got the DN101 today and have been trying to make it fit. But neither the GH1 or 7D can mount directly on top of the CX231 anymore. And just as you described I can't shut the battery tray either.
The reason why I thought it would work is the way I have my CX231. It's under the base plate of my rods and it doesn't intrude on anything when mounted this way.
How does the audio sound once you bring it into your editing software and get rid of the right channel? Also does the juiced link power phantom Mics that I may have used as my onboard for and hvx?
Ah yeah, i guess i could use my rails too. But after having a letus and hv30, i'm really done with all the setup time.
Got an email from Juicedlink saying that they are aware the battery tray is harder to close, but that you just need to apply more pressure. And even said it's harder to take it out, once it is in (that's what she said).
I actually tried this a little bit, and the power on the jl didn't turn on. Scared the crap out of me, then eventually it came back on again, but I really don't want to break the JL in this process, even though, Robert at JL is totally awesome and will fix it for free. I just don't want to wait for the turn around time. I'm shooting some things today. Can have it up by tomorrow.
I was considering this option, but after reading your posts it seems that getting an external recorder (Zoom H4N comes to mind) might be a simpler option after all.
Consider:
- Juice link is YET ANOTHER item you have to deal with in your setup. Its different from Zoom, but no advantage as far as bulk/setup is concerned.
- You STILL have to tweak it in post (yes, its just dropping one audio track, but with a Zoom you just drop in the new audio track - no big disadvantage because you do it only once in the session)
- It has its own issues, regarding setup and mounting on your cam.
I guess its only real advantage is that you get your audio on the DSLR video clip. Then again, I'm starting to see the wisdom of having separate audio (and a soundman) for shoots when the audio is absolutely critical, but thats why the pros do it that way, right?
I don't think its the dropping in the audio as much as the audio sync'ing in post that i'm avoiding by not using a 2nd recording unit. That takes time. Especially if you have multiple starts and stops in your recording.
On my first shoot I had my HV30+Juicedlink+NTG2 as my audio recorder. Which I think is more a pain in the ass because I kept almost forgetting to push record on the HV cuz my focus was on the GH1. There's less margin for error if you have just one recording unit.
So sure, the h4n has superior audio, and having a sound guy is ideal, but i think the juicedlink and ntg2 work quite well. Definitely well enough that if my films suck, it wouldn't be the fault of my audio equipment.
Good review, and thanks for doing so. I was waiting to hear feedback, and was hoping for a solution for the GH1.
QUOTE from your review ""I think this product was rushed and Juicedlink should introduce a mixer with this functionality built in. Not this tacky add-on!""
That's to bad, as they have the resources to get it right; more than we do...
And they probably will release a minimixer with this function built in. But they need to address the feedback problem and have a way to review clips without the noisy channel. And I can't understand why they used such a low quality noisy headphone amplifier when the minimixers are excellent in sound quality. Beats me.
