Judging Exposure on lights?

I have 1 artist and two kino flo style lights lighting him from the side. I have always been able to judge exposure on a person by their skin appearance, but how do I know if the lights that are in the shot are being over exposed?

Thanks

Are you saying the bulbs are on screen? If so they will be overexposed. There's no way you could stop down and not have everything else lit.

Exactly, so if I were to submit this for broadcast then it would not be possible due to over exposure , correct? Using 3 way color correct I like to adjust the mids and highs but noticed it overexposes my lights, just thinking od a better more professional way to do this..... :(

You can still adjust and submit for broadcast. The light will clip. You will need to either use a software broadcast safe filter or a hardware limiter. Either way you'll be fine.

Hot back lights are all over every bigtime music video. I think the main issue is properly exposing your subject. As long as you do that you're money.
