Jonathan/Stephen - What editing solution do you use?

..and how does it look like, when you downconvert the hd to sd anyway. have you ever done it and are you satisfied with the look, or is there any high recommended workflow to downconvert nicely a hd to sd signal. I'm wondering who has got any experience with it.

Once you have HD material on an SD(or HD) timeline , you can export it using a MSDV codec. Which is commonly understood by most NLEs.

hallo teddybear
can canopus edius export the material with this msdv codec and will fc be able to read it?
my workflow with the jvc gy hd 101 would be than the following:
1. import the 720p with canopus edius
2. downconvert it to sd
3. export it with msdv to a hard disc
4. import the sd signal to final cut

you think that will work?
and still I've got this unanswered question. How does the downconverted material look like? Does anybody has got experience. Or does anybody know an other programm, that is able to downconvert a hd 720p/25 signal to sd?
And how does it look like

Thanks for answers
alex

The work flow you listed is ok.
Just get the latest version of Edius which is 3.6.
Also make sure it has the upgraded PROCODER and TITLER.

As to how the downconverted material looks like. Well, its SD. But its a darn good looking SD, especially from one who knows how to get the most from the HD101. I think this is better than shooting SD. And besides you have a future proof raw footage. If the client later on asks for an HD version youre good to go.

Hi teddybear

thanks for answers so far anyway. do you know, if canopus keeps the timecode, while I would downconvert the hd material to sd.
and would it keep the timecode as well in the msdv codec?

thanks and hopefully I can answer you once as well a question

alexszo,

I'm not sure I could answer you on this since I dont use the timecode and don't keep track of it. I'm an "eyeball" editor and shooter.

fwiw, FCP support for ProHD 24p is supposed to be right around the corner. I edit XL-H1 24F with FCP through DVCProHD or PhotoJPEG. PhotoJPEG at 75% is amazingly good for an even smaller bit rate than DVCProHD. (12MBs vs 14MBs) If I need anything better I go uncompressed, but that's pretty rare.

I'm not a big fan of HDV editing in general, so finishing in an intermediate works fine for me. Hate the idea of rendering cc and FX in 25mbs MPEG2, not to mention the long render time rebuilding GOP's for a final "conform" and print to tape.

do any of these systems allow you to burn dvds at 24 frame and not 30. Ive been told premiere has a bug that only allows you to burn at 30. Is this true

Virtually every DVD player made can/does play back at 24fps.

I am about to purchase PP2, so I can't say 4 sure - but I'd be shocked if it didn't (esp the newest version) based on the above. Hope this helps...

John
