Joey Lawrence Perception

I also found she looked best flipped outside down. It gives a disorienting feeling that you can only get away with sometimes in pictures without making the viewer confused.

actually studies have been done on face recognition and it's orientation (upside down vs right side up). one of my old psych books actually had 2 pictures of a face, both upside down and both looked identical when viewed that way. but when you rotated the book, you found that one face was "normal" where the other one had very distorted features. i assume this principle would play a role in what was mentioned above about her "only looking cute" when reverted.

That is pretty interesting. Crazy how the eye plays tricks and how we can play tricks on the eye.

I got the DVD yesterday and checked it out. Pretty good stuff with some really solid advice. Thank you and always happy to support someone else.

My girlfriend and I just turned it off. I love this DVD..great job. I hope you actually plan to do another one in the future.:)

Yes, I just got the DVD yesterday and watched it last night. Really great stuff! And, it was interesting to see your workflow. I'm really glad I "donated" to your DVX cause.

And, I'm with Angrius...you could really drum up business for a sequel.

I completely agree. I would pay at least another $25 to see how you did these two photos.

On one I want to know about the overall sharpening techniques used and how you got the image to look that way with no artifacting and on the homeless, how you got the overall look of smoothness and that almost painted quality. Get working Joey!!! Curious minds are waiting to know and to fork out their cash!

(BTW: That second one is one of the most amazing and haunting images I've ever seen... Just tell me how you got his face to look that way)

...Or the guy standing in a field with the wooden structure in the background. Or the zebra picture. or...well, I can go on and on....

Hey Joey, whattya say....another DVD tutorial? You take picture requests?...

Hey Jeremy

In those pictures I used the exact same techniques, except directed them towards the way I wanted them to look. What I mean by this is using the same tools in a different way. For example, suppose in that polar bear picture I did a curves adjustment, I would not do the greenish cross processing look discussed in my DVD but actually the opposite co-ordinates of the curve line to achieve the 'cold' look it has.

I'm afraid this summer I will be busy working on the actual film I made this DVD to fund... But hey, if I run out of money who knows? :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

For those interested, this film I am planning will probably be full length, but not follow the conventional formulas most movies have today. The film's themes will be dependant visually in an orgy of music and visual poetry telling a story. There will be dialogue of course, but it is limited to put better emphasis on the parts that are actually spoken. My thought about this movie is not to make something complex and 'different' for the sake of being out-there-artistic, but simple and visually tell the story like they did before talkies. If it ends up sucking at least I tried. :) Baraka meets Totsi. I have a group of eager people who really love the idea of my project that will be helping me. For now I can tell you it revolves around the theme of homelessness.

The guy in the field is my actually father, he's a good sport. I painted his face and made him stand there.

I'm his biggest fan:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) haha. Joey's going to be working with me on the 48 hour Toronto Film Challenge later this June. I HATE to hi-jack your thread Joey, but just wondering if there were any DVXusers who wanted to be part of our team.

Actually, I'll start a thread in the Cafe to see if we can get a couple team members.

Oh yeah, back to the point of my post...I guess there is none, I just get to show off what a wicked cinematographer I have for my challenge! :Drogar-Evil(DBG):

I didnt learn much at all and found it very short. I would have liked to see more Colour Grading explained. I am all for supporting others in their projects and following their dreams though :)

Thanks for the oppinion. :-)
Keep in mind the DVD was designed for still photography, and goes more in depth about other photoshop techniques than just color grading.

i didn't buy your dvd, but i tried to copy your technique in one of my photographs which i have in another post on this site. i think it came out well, so certainly thanks for the inspiration.

So, anything new?
DVXuser already?

BTW, for those having the DVD:
I´m really not interested in the grunge technics but more how he handles color, contrast and detail (eg in the homeless shots on his site) - how much of this is covered on the DVD?
