You might also consider calling a bigger, local rental house and telling them your story and asking if they know how to collect in this type of case (if they're a big place that's been around a while, it's likely they've dealt with this before)

Sure, this has happened to us. Unfortunately there is not much that can be done. File a report with local police, and wait. Even if something happens you most likely won’t see your equipment (probably sold it) or any restitution.

With gear becoming cheaper and cheaper, this is only going to happen more often with people wanting to become min-rental houses. I say leave it up to the pros that can absorb the loss.

Our biggest losses aren’t really from scams but legit people that simply don’t pay their bills.
 
I have to say I am more than tired of this thread in Marketplace. Sorry for your loss. If anything you and the others consoling you will have learned one this as stated by F/Vesco. Leave it to the pros who can absorb the loss.
Move on and get over it or do a doc on him as a scam artist , sell it and deal with it. But take it to the Cafe or someplace. You took a risk, didin;t cover your ass and you got burned.
Not nice but it is a big nasty world out there and if you want to swim with the big fish, expect to get hooked and bit.
 
i like having it in the marketplace because this guy keeps coming back to this forum. i dont want to get burned by this guy if he tries under a different name...

I disagree. With constant new members, people need to be made aware of what could be out there and precautions to take.

The only reason I don't like it in the marketplace is because that means it happened again. And that sucks.

Geez, this is the internet and a forum no less. Why so much angst over a post that will no doubt help the many lurkers (myself included) on this forum? I can't fathom a post annoying anyone because you can just ignore it. So do that; just ignore it. I'm a big fan of keeping the name of scammers front and center for all to see.

Great. we agree to disagree.
This is a marketplace. Get a mod to post a sticky. But when this becomes a venue for "group therapy" and "if I could get my hands on him" or "lets harass his mother and family" it is way out of freakin' hand!
Quite frankly I find the attitude and the comments in this thread offensive and off topic for this area.

No he isn't. He just doesn't care. There is a difference. The sad thing is that people like him go about their lives like they are stand up guys. I wonder what his girl friend, brother, and mom think about their FaceBook pages being posted here for all to see in association to him and his criminal activity.

It's truly sad.
 
As it is anywhere, there are going to be predators who find ways to take advantage of people - no matter how safe a situation is perceived to be.

The most dangerous place to use your credit card isn't online. The really dangerous moment comes when you put your card in with the check and hand it to a waiter at that restaurant down the street. Still, people think just the opposite.

We live in a world where most people are honest and that's why you see people surprised when they're not. That's why you keep seeing these threads. One thing is for sure. Attacking the victim is poor form.

If you are suggesting that I am "attacking the victim" you are incorrect! As I stated I am sorry for the loss that this person has incurred. Like others, who had said the same in so many words, I feel that if you make a decision to get into business you should be equipped and prepared to deal with what comes down the pike. This person obviously was not and suffered a loss.
That I need to come to a "Marketplace" to shop for gear and read "in my opinion" nasty, lynch mob commentary is not right.
There was NEVER an attack ( a very offensive word) in my commentary, just my opinion.
 
No objection to the "lynch mob" attitude here. In Texas we believe in honor and conversely swift justice to scumbags. A little "speculative vigilantism" is a good way to let off steam.

So in that vein, hang 'em from the yardarms!

Speak for yourself. I think this thread stands as a warning against dealing with this guy and thus can only be beneficial to us. And whether or not someone is equipped to deal with this situation or not doesn't change that.

Does anyone have a picture of this guy, how about sticking that ?

Does your roommate have his serial number to prove this is his gear if you do find him ?

If this happened to me and I didn't have insurance, I'd hire a private investigator and post this guys picture everywhere with a reward "if items are recovered" for however much you have. Then I'd submit this to any/every news station that will play it.

However Brain is right, it's a dog eat dog world and you always need to cover yourself first.



I hope you find your gear and let you know if I see this guy my way.

Most don't see or read these stickies, maybe make this one a different color or size... I don't know say neon green, hot red, something that stands out a little more than our normal sticky stuff. It's a shame this is still happening to people. Oh and see that the facebook account was deleted, this guy is reading these posts for sure. Don't worry he'll get caught or try this with the wrong person.

If you're tired of the thread, why comment on it? Why even bother checking it?

By the sound of it, it doesn't seem like you've ever been in the "I-got-fu&*ed" position. I have a VERY big hunch that if the shoe was on the other foot you'd have quite different sentiments about this tiresome thread.

It didn't sound like you were attacking the victim as much as defending the alleged perpetrator.
