Jim, what's the advantage to reserving a lens?

Jim,
My dad and I are already reserve #27 and getting really excited about the camera. Anyhow, we will eventually want the zoom lens too. My dad thinks we should get a reserve in on that before the end of this month but I'm telling him not to as I can't see a reason to lock in. I want it eventually but it won't kill me if someone else gets the zoom a month before I do because they reserved and I didn't. So...is there any other reason to get a reserve in on the zoom lens before the month is out?

Thanks a bunch Jim. You rock, fly a flag and I'll salute it...

One thing to consider... the zoom will be very popular with 35mm camera users as well, and that opens up a bigger market and more potential sales lining up for it than simply RED users... a terrific value on a popular focal range... If the quality is high (and it will be), the demand will be off the charts for both individuals and rental houses.

Regards,

Price lock is quite an important thing. In the Lens world, lenses are a bit like commodities rather than pieces of technology. Price can go anywhere depending on production. Also, the 300mm lens is a steal at that price. Big steal infact, if you have the chance to lock down that price go for it. Ive seen similar lenses go for 4x as much easily.

ooh....does that go the same for REDone reservation holders? Or is the price going to stay the same no matter what?

honestly, it wouldn't bother me too much if the RED changed price. If the camera needs to cost $22.000, LET IT COST $22.000! I don't want this camera to sacrifice one feature or function to maintain the $17500 pricetag. :0
...that said though, let's not boost it up to $200k. ;)

reservations are a good idea guys... its a non risk investment.

The Zoom i think is going to be one of the best selling Red products, because as mentioned its not going to only be restricted to the Red camera, people shooting celluloid can PL mount it to there Arri's.

I for one am very happy about this. If RED is going to be successful they will price things at market -- not thousands below market. I have always had a feeling that 17.5 would be real low for the market when this camera comes out. It is already more than I can afford, but I jumped on board with my every penny hoping that Jim would hold that price for us little eager independents. One more thank you for something he didn't have to do, but did.

RED 258

Ah, I was under the mistaken impression this was a proprietary Red-only zoom lens (i.e., only the Red lens could be used without special mounts, and no other camera could accept this lens). Guess I'll be reserving that too then.

I am in the same boat. This camera system has been more than I could hope for coming to market within the next five years at this price point. This is the 'no compromise" tool for aquisition that I need. The LW compact zoom, I am sure will have as great an impact, but with a much broader appeal to the market as prescribed by JRED.

Anyone want a bolex and a tobin intervalometer?-- baby needs lens deposit money. ;-)

I agree with Benjamin in the post below. Could there be a 30 day extension on the lenses for reservation holders? I have some corp. acct payables that are still out. Thank you none the less, all considerations are greatly appreciated by all.

Jim is there any considering make the lens reservation a little longer. Since you didn't start taking reservation as early as you did with the camera? The only reason I ask this Is I would really like to reserve one but think I might come up short on the 31st. Deadline.. I know 750 isn't that much but when you have all the rest of your free money in development of a show it its. So just a thought.

If Fatbird wants to pay 8K more can I have mine for 8K less?

I don't WANT to pay more, but if it takes more money to deliver the quality that's advertised then I'm all for it.
More features take priority for me over maintaining the advertized pricetag. I would defenitely pay extra money if I had to for the camera to maintain its advertized framerates.

Got it. Don't skimp on functionality.

But, as the kind gentlemen at Red are listening with bated breath to everything we are suggesting, STOP SUGGESTING A PRICE INCREASE!! :)grin: messin with ya.)

I haven't looked at other long prime lenses but i do remember Greg Lowry mention that he thought the 300m was the same specs as another makers lens and it could in fact be the same lens re-badged? Greg also mentioned the price was much the same as the "other lens" he compared it to. At the time no counter remark was made by red which made me wonder? Red has yet to state is their prime unique and made exclusively by red.

Acehole111 Do we have other 300mm prime lenses then at $20,000 or thereabouts? I honestly don't say this to be awkward i take it you have oriced other 300mm prime lenses.

A question for you guys. Given that the prime 300mm is a specialist lens and could be used for a number of uses (i am thinking of wildlife myself) i take it that a tripod will be virtually mandatory.

Also a newbie question (sorry if it seems stupid) but roughly just how much leeway is there between getting a shot in focus and the distance to the object given that the lens is a fixed 300mm lens. Perhaps i better explain... Using a zoom if i was say 100m away i would adjust the zoom to simply get in focus. With the 300mm red prime what is the optimum distance you have to be to get the shot in focus. If that does not make sense just say so (i have to learn).

I'm in the same boat, I'm owed money and desperately trying to get the spare 750 before the end of this month to reserve one, I've reserved the camera so i guess I'll just raid a few banks near the 31st to reserve the zoom.

hmm..

Mike, ofcourse there are inexpensive 300mm lenses that you can get for next to nothing. But more often than not, quality and price dont go hand in hand. Based on an interiview I've seen with Ted Schilowitz stating that this lens will also aim to trump other lenses in the market in the same aggressive vein of the RED camera, Im assuming that it should be compared to the higher end 300mm lenses out there. In otherwords, the RED 300mm may be better than other manufacturers 300mm in the same price range. Just as RED does not equal a Varicam.

All this being said assuming that RED is producing their own optics or certain elements. Which I have assumed because of Jims extensive experience with optics. Please correct me if this lens is just a rebadge. In that case, discard my argument and feel free to compare it to other similar lenses out there in the same price range.

Remember, at 300mm, your going to start taking notice of the quality of the lens very quickly. The lens design becomes way more complex than say an 85mm lens in order to keep things looking good and sharp. And RED has big shoes to fill in that respect, so I dont doubt that they will be producing a remarkable lens which, just like RedOne, will be worth alot more than its sticker price.

So in holding Red to that high esteem, YES I am comparing it to other telephoto's out there that will make the RED price tag look like pocket change.
