GH3 Jerome AZ: Historic Billion Dollar Copper Camp

Dan, can you comment on how the GH3 1080 60p footage compares to the TM700 1080 60p footage (with as similar settings as possible). I sometimes use my handy little TM700 as a "B" camera with some corporate shoots I've done (obviously with good lighting). The GH3, if comparable in quality to the TM700 with 60p footage, might make for a nice additional option.

Thanks!

The TM700 is a fine camcorder, and one of the sharpest images I've seen. It's also one of the most convenient video devices I've used. However, the GH2 and GH3 produce superior color, and are far more adjustable and versatile. The GH cameras produce beautiful blue skies compared to the TM700. I've moved the TM700 Picture Adjust to +5 Color and still can't reproduce the GH blues or other colors.

The GH2 is not as sharp as TM700 1080/60p, but the GH3 is equally sharp using MOV 1080/30&60p 50Mbps. The 50Mbps codec can also be stretched more in editing. I haven't yet used GH3 AVCHD, and the ALL-I codec for high detail is unusable due to Moire.

I would say the GH3 will nicely handle all you're doing with the TM700, and much more.

Good luck with your research.

Thanks Dan. That's just what I needed to know. Your GH3 footage shows exactly what you say above. My next move is to hold and see a GH3 to compare its weight/size to the 5D MKII with a 70-200 L lens on it (at least it's the F4 version vs. the 2.8! LOL!). The Sony NEX-6 seems nice too for lightweight, but the video seems to fall WAY short of the GH3. I'm not looking for "filmic" for my "home" footage or even as a small professional rig for specific situations. I'm in the corporate world, but then again if I need "filmic" I can use the GH3 for that or my 5D MKII. "Such a deal"...

Dan, I pulled the trigger and ordered the GH3 with the 12-35 and 35-100mm lenses. The lenses are in stock, but the camera body is back-ordered from Adorama. I went with them due to the price on the 35-100 being $100 less than BH and others. Based on your Vimeo clips and some others of the 60p footage and reports on still photography quality this camera will become my prime travel system and also be used for various professional shoots I do. I still love my 5D MKII for photography but this system will make a wonderful addition to my arsenal.

Congratulations on the pending arrival of your new GH3 and lenses! Good choice of lenses by the way. I hope you enjoy the GH series products as much as I have.
