Jeremy Hyler, Matthew B. Moore and Cory Doggett " PROJECT: UNTITLED"

Gotcha! But, when you see an Asian actress/character in a film do you honestly always expect her to have an Asian accent?

Absolutely not.

Suzyinatutu said:
You mentioned that it was an odd experience for you to see an Asian woman on screen and then to have to associate her voice, which sounded very American, with her character...

This is where I perhaps didn't explain myself well enough. Had I SEEN her first, she could have had probably any accent (English, Southern, etc.), and it woudn't have phased me. But I DIDN'T see her first ... I heard her. So in my head I was imagining one person, and then I SAW someone completely different. I don't see how this is any different than when you're talking to someone on the phone & you build an image in your head of what they look like ... and then are surprised that they're nothing like you pictured. It's not a bad thing, it just happens.

So again, to everyone on this thread that I possibly offended, and who may now think I'm who-knows-what, I meant ZERO harm in the comment ... just stating the things that were going through my head as I was watching the film.

Now, back to Spidey, I re-read my initial post, which quite frankly I forgot I'd already done when posting the second time with my Word.doc cut & paste ... I actually gave you quite a few props & great comments on things I DID like about the film. Of many of my reviews, the one I gave yours was among the more detailed.

I'm just serverly disappointed that you appear to go out of your way to come to the R.E.M. thread & blast the film & myself, stating not a single positive thing about it. Don't get me wrong, if you find nothing positive about it, I don't want you to make things up, and you apparently feel it's total crap, which is fine. But the way you went about it, and stating flat out that you were railing me in retaliation ... well, just didn't feel very professional.

I tend to try & be pretty considerate in my posts, and did not mean to offend or upset anyone with what I said about REUNION. It ranked high on my score sheet ... not as high as CPU did in the Sci-Fest, but still high nonetheless.

...Well, what the hell is wrong with an Asian woman who sounds like an American?

America is a melting-pot and there are plenty of Asian people who have assimilated well with Western culture...so that they don't all have Asian accents.

Kim is not a first-generation Korean American....She doesn't speak in Chinkglish (a slang term, and not meant to be offensive to the Asian race in any way) and she deserves to be seen with a wider scope!

The only way to start combatting stereotypes is to start seeing things in a different light...

See my above post, which I was apparently typing as you were typing this ... I was responding to your post from several pages back ... had I seen this, I would have addressed it.

Honestly, this is getting WAY blown out of proportion. I have ZERO problem with an Asian woman sounding like an American, a Brit, a Canadian, or anything else. But I hadn't SEEN her first, which I think I explained & made a case for in the above post.

Everyone understand now that it was not an attack, nor a racist comment, and was certainly not meant to be stereotyping saying she NEEDED to have an Asian accent? For me, it simply would have helped build the picture in my own head of what I was about to see.

I don't think that Norm is saying that he has a problem with anyone of any race sounding anyway.

It's a racist society in so far that it's fairly W.A.S.P. centric because they/we are the majority for a short while yet, honkies are the majority. When you write a screeplay, you need not introduce the character as white. If the cahracter is black or whatever and you want your reader to picture that then you say, JODI (black,25) or something because the default assumption is white.

I'm NOT saying that's right ... just that it is.

I think Norm is sayig that since he heard someone that sounds like the white people he knows he pictured a young white woman.

Not saying this is right or wrong.

I think he could have exercised a bit of caution in phrasing in this touchy subject, but I think at the core he is just sayinhg he pictured W.A.S.P. and then saw asian american and for split second he had to readjust.

Is this a tad racist? Maybe. But not in an evil superior vs inferior way, just in a slightly presumptive way.

Anyway its a touchy subject and I hope I've helped rather than fanned the flames. I posted the link above because I do subscribe to the notion that we are all a little bit racist. Usually in small benign ways - little assumptions here and there, and while I think its good to continually question that, I don't think it makes someone Hitler or David Duke ... it just means they've had a certain limited experience as we all have and their assumptiomns are based on that.

It didnt throw me off to here a western accent and see an asian face, ESPECIALLY considering the fact that i read through this thread and was WELL aware of the fact, before i watched the movie, that the voice was going to be the asian leads voice. But i cant understand being thrown off by hearing a voice and then seeing a hot asian girl. Theres something goin on here.

Spidey, great movie by the way. Was my top 3

Nothing's going on. He already apologized for it and offered to stop.

Let's stop accusing him of an obvious miswording/mistake...

im not accusing him of anything, but consider the last sentence that he stated "For me, it simply would have helped build the picture in my own head of what I was about to see."

just natural inclination

Accusation. Jack posted a reasonable explaination. That should've been the end of it.

Let's not throw gasoline on the dwindling fire. Let it be.

Thanks, Kholi.

Cynic, so you've obviously never spoken to someone on the phone, whether for a brief period or an extended one, and built a picture in your head of what this person looked like? Well, good for you.

I guess that makes me an evil person for being visual about what I hear.

However, since you have this 'natural inclination' about me, let me spell it out for you ... ah, nevermind. I really don't think there's anything I can say to change your mind, and it feels like you're trying to spur something on, which I refuse to play into.

And frankly, this is becoming a hi-jack of REUNION, which I didn't intend. Again, great film, really enjoyed it, and apologize for the misunderstandings folks. Thank you for those of you who can accept the apology for what was in no way intentional.

Step aside boys, I'll handle this...

*Proceeds to heavily urinate all over fire until it is extinguished*

Happy? :-Happy(DBG):

Hey BTW: I had a hispanic girl in my latest film and she sounded American. Anyway... this has been WAY blown outa porportion.

well i want to clear something i posted on someone's thread that they got to move on to a"bigger pond" because they are so consistantly good! but of course some thought that was a put down....so i took it off! so for all you elementary school children who cannot handle what some of us say, or don't know the meaning, try getting your head out of their orfice and maybe you'll see the light of day. this is beginning to resemble a fraternity party....a bunch of lads bent over with their pants down saying YES SIR MAY I HAVE ANOTHER! GAWD I HATE FRAT RATS! ps. i hope you don't think this is directed towards you.............and if you think it is and you're upset, then i suggest you stand up straight and bring your pants back up and try walking like a man!

I didn't take it that way. I appreciated your comment. And Norm wasn't referring to what you said, btw.

Tensions are high here. Let's give Spidey his thread back, he made another good film and it doesn't deserve to have a thread bogged down in all this.

Let's try to remember that it's been a pretty good fest in most respects, try to let go of the things that have been said which were probably taken the wrong way anyway and call a cease-fire.

But I'll shuttup about it after this. Good luck all.

sorry spidey! i was reading all this stuff going on and got carried away....and jack i know you knew what i meant.......and yes i should shut up and give spidey back HIS THREAD! SPIDEY GREAT SHOWING ON YOUR SHORT! ....MAN THERE WERE SOME GRUESOME SCENES! SORRY ABOUT THAT GUYS.......

WTF DOES THAT MEAN! what does an american sound like! .............LET'S SEE...native so called americans (you know the ones with the feathers an all) then the Spanish who raped and killed then enslaved the feathery foes and took their beliefs and forced them to pray to their god or they would serve the consequences....or even before that, possibly the Vikings in the northeast. so then we should have a Algonkian Spanish and possibly Norweigan accent.

Just wanted to share some photos I did yesterday! I look pretty darn goth, huh? Not bad for a sweet tea pie hunny cake who's too nice...I tried. I tried!

Color photo(s) to come! Now, it's up to you to decide in which one I look meaner.

*Note to Jeremy: If only I could have worn this kind of make-up for the film...It would have been pretty intense at first glance.

BTW--I did the heavy black eyeshadowing in Photoshop CS! The rest of it is natural--make-up that I did.

So, will you also hire me next time to do make-up for your film?
