Jarred First Impressions- Finally

I can't wait to give this thing a go! I can only imagine how sweet it will be on the Flyer.
Hey Mikko,

I've got a Flyer (and the HVX as well, now), and let me tell you - with a mattebox attached to the front (I'm using the new HVX kit from Chrosziel), it balances tremendously. Keeps the gimbal high on the post (as I prefer) and front-to-back weight is very well distributed. I plan to use the combination extensively on my short feature in April.

If there's anything specific you'd like to see, I can try to get you some pictures and/or footage. Shoot me a PM.

So Deuce is a big fight fan as well as a man whore? How was it to work with him? Did Sandler show up? lol

Congrats bro on both gigs. Munic would be quite the resume' piece. I'd have to replace my camera operator credit on Jackass with that. I'm bummed I didn't get onto JA 2. They were shooting here in town this week but since they were a big hit on the first one, they brought their entire crew this time. Those bastards! I was hoping to drink beer all day like I did on the first movie.

Congrats on moving to LA too J. That's quite a switch from Vancover.

but I don't think the picture made with HVX is so big in the composition. Btw because it is a biger production the CG company has the equipment to clean up the picture if it had noise in it. And because it isn't in the US v. only in the european than I guess it is only a few seconds we are talking about.

It would be nice to see a few frames of the final compisition.

just to be clear it is full frame.. its not like we shot a tennis ball full frame and dropped it in to a small corner.. we shot full frame stuff at the same aspect and size as the film scan and dropped the HVX stuff overtop.

And if i remember correctly there was about 1200 frames.

I really appreciate your report - I am interested in your work flow - how did you format the P2 cards on the laptop - were you using a Mac of PC? I have yet to discover how to format the cards on the Mac. Thanks again for your report.

The camera comes with a little P2 Format plugin for the PC.. if you right click on the card in explorer, there is a format option, you click format and it wipes it.

Jarred,

It would be interesting to know what type of scene you were shooting for Munich. Were there people in the shots or props? What did they composite your shots into? Did they composite them over exsisting scenes that were already in the film?

I loved Munich. It's great that you worked on it. Thanks for the awesome HVX200 report!

NOTE:
I wonder why they had to change things for the Eurpoean version. Were they trying not to tick someone off? Did they feel a scene wouldn't translate?Interesting stuff.

Also, this is for the DVD release, right (or was it for an alternative theatrical version)? Will they keep your stuff for the HD DVD (or Blu Ray) release in the future?

Congrats Jarred! Munich is a great film. It reminds me of "Day of the Jackal". I thought Spielberg did a fantastic job with really minimal special effects. Great angles and a great story. I'm still waiting on my HVX from EVS. I think I'm 37 on the list. Did you go P2 to Laptop to firewire hard drive? Also Haakon and Mikko I would love to see a picture of your HVX on the Flyer. Thanks.

Thanks for the review. I'm envious, I can't wait to try it out myself :)

PM sent.

Same question here: where will that scene(s) be insert to? - When and where can we see it in Europe? - I just wonder, as a) the movie is already done and b) of course I HAVE to see that footage!!!

Thanks for answering our question, Jarred! And thanks for sharing your impressions!

Thanks for the detailed report Jarred. Nice to get news from the trenches.

Oh, and good luck in LA world!

It allways makes owners of a camcorder glad if they read about such storry. It feels good to own the same equipment but I don't think Mr. Spielberg did have a clue about use of equipment. He just gave the CG company what he wanted and they hade to deliver it within the budget they had. They choosed HVX because it was a cost effective solution but I don't think the picture made with HVX is so big in the composition. Btw because it is a biger production the CG company has the equipment to clean up the picture if it had noise in it. I'm looking for a point in there and can't find one.

jared, I'm also very interested in what was shot, but not only from a technical standpoint. MUNICH, while a period piece , is super current regarding what buttons it pushes in our very volitile world situation. So...why the change, what was the content that needed to be altered, in order to avoid offending...whom?

I'm guessing the nudity in the killing of the marta hari character? But that would seem to need a more intensive reshoot in the boathouse set.

curious...just saw the film last week. It's still very vivid in me mind...

great to be able to ask such high level content questions regarding this camera. boy it's gotten far in a hurry! I kind of just assume that the quality of the HVX is more that good enough to blend in, based on the look of the film and the better test footage that's been posted here.

The scene that needed "fixing" was the bed scene where the pregnant girl is in bed with the lead. The "sex" scene per say.. but there was no nudity to begin with.

For release in the middle east , the belly and legs needed to be covered up. So we setup the scene in a studio, with a bed on a greenscreen. Had a double lie in bed under a sheet, and lit the scene exactly like it was in the original shot.

After we shot it, they keyed out the bed, and dropped it over the original shot and motion tracked it. It matched up incredibly.

Walter Graff has some other opinions over at DVinfo.net, but his statements just initiated a lawsuit so ill refrain from responding to those.

Thanks Jarred! So cool.

TT

ps that guy at dvinfo...woah! He better call his buddy over at kathleen kennedy's office...to help him find a good lawyer ;-)

Congrats Jarred! Nice contribution. And forget who doesn't know what is saying. In my native language there is a pop adage that says: Os cães ladram e a caravana passa. [The dogs bark but the caravan moves on]

damn i missed what walter said. the comment asking chirs hurd what happened to his deleted reply is pretty damn funny tho.

to get back on track i wonder what made production choose the HVX over something like the XLH1 going out HD-SDI or even a Varicam or CineAlta for that matter. i AM an HVX fanboy but am also not bashing the Canon. just curious as to the rational of choosing the HVX/P2/DVCProHD over uncompressed HD via HD-SDI and "higher" resolution (for those believe more in numbers)

so sorry if this stokes the numbers/specs flames any more but i'm just curious.

awesome. just awesome. congratulations on the gig jarred! just curious, how were you able to find a gig like this?

Jarred knows people. That kid's going places!

yeah contentlab.. I had the same questions, varicam or cinalta woulda been a great choice.

But they took some tests from one of our shoots from a week earlier, just to see if it would work, and they where happy with what they saw, and the resolution was not a problem, in fact they probably woulda bought the camera that day if it wasn't for the noise problem they ran into.

And all those people asking me for the name of the post house.. im not ignoring you.. I don't name names on any of my productions unless im a producer, I emailed them though and asked them to clear the info.

And don't worry about Walter.. that will be dealt with. I can take personal attacks all day long, but when someone attacks my business, specially my day job, I don't put up with it, and which is why I have a very talented lawyer.

some people have a problem with success I guess.
