Jannard posted some good news regarding RED EPIC

If red is like every other large camera company, these statements would be correct. If red cared about making great camera's and not about their bottom line(as much) then most of what has said would not quite apply. Honestly a lot of you are making assumptions about who they are and why they are they way they are. I think you are wrong, but that is just my assumption, I couldn't care less. But I'm interested in red as a product why do you care? if not why are you here? I believe red just can't price out these things or work out timelines, because it's all new cameras from the ground up (mostly) and they are new to the game, so yes they suck at that (price estimates and time estimates). But people realized this years ago and work around it why can't others, or just forget about it until you see them in store for sale and then complain about prices.

But what do I know they could be evil marketing geniuses but I highly doubt it, maybe marketing geniuses but not evil and manipulative but that is just me. Seems like people project what they would do in a given situation on a person or company and then assume that's why something was done.

Once again what do I know, I just find it odd when others who attack and defend teeth and nail their cameras and companies against random posters making random statements, come here and do the same thing as the random posters, come on grow up manage your ego's if that is the case or maybe you're just being a dick who knows(talking to no one in particular but if you get upset then I must be talking to you otherwise why take offense?), and let others have their fun too, not everyone has to agree with you that your camera is the tits, I don't want everyone to agree and shoot on my camera that would suck. Variety is the spice for a good life pie.

p.s. if red customers were to have a uprising over those issues I'd expect a lot more uprisings for a lot more important issues, but people seem to have their priorities mighty screwed up these days.(I know you didn't mean like that...but I do, stop the hotdog bun conspiracy before it's too late!)

hey lookie here another red topic that can't stay on topic, this is fun.... ah human nature!(don't push that button)

have a good one and please play nice!

eidt: seems like a lot of this, and not from the people you would expect, I seem to notice it's the people labeling others fanboy that are in fact the fanboys (does that make me a fanboy, the statement not my attitude)
http://techreport.com/discussions.x/21294
.... I have a problem.... but it's not with camera's, just about all other electronics and entertainment though.....

I agree this is not really good news but also not really bad news, more expected news.

You make very good points, Barry. So to that, I should think there would be more of an uprising from the Red Community for this. But looking through the thread, people seem to be saying, "Awesome! Hurray! You're the best!" Am I missing something?

I'm not versed on much of the Red flow (not workflow, but company flow) as they're far out of my price range (in the same manner that I don't look into the Viper), but I should imagine this would not be a good thing to do to people (especially more than once). But it doesn't seem to matter. People are still on board. Which is great for Red. And more power to them. But what's the point in releasing a price like $3500 for a camera that will be 5x that later?

It's because RedUser is filled with Red fanboys, which I guess is to be expected on a site solely dedicated to their products. But nevertheless, it is quite odd that whenever the company makes an announcement, even one that's clearly a negative as in this case, the users inevitably post with "OMG!! RED'S THE BEST!! THANK YOUU!!!11! THIS CAMERA WILL CHANGE CIVILIZATION AS WE KNOW IT!!" It is what it is and I'm certainly not trying to bash Red or their site and its users, but there is definitely a high level of "fanboy-ism" and echo chamber there that I think actually hurts the company overall (since the core employees post and interact there frequently) .

I'm actually quite fond of the Red products and think they make some amazing cameras, however, they really need someone else to be in charge of the "business" aspect of their company. Their excuse is that they're doing something no one has done before, which I don't buy. Perhaps their camera specs are different than others, but at the end of the day, they're producing and selling a manufactured electronic product (in a category that many companies release similar products in). Things such as delivery dates, supply chain management, price points, marketing, etc. all need vast improvement.

Should the Epic-S actually end up getting released at 12-13K, I will most definitely buy one. If it comes in at 20+, then I'll be looking for something else.

iPhone and autocorrect?
Oddly enough, milksac, the only part of your post I understood was "that's what I'm talking about"
:)

So the effects of the Tsunami, which happened four months ago, is going to lead to price increases five months from now? I am not disputing that, but it is kind of, "Interesting". Sounds like the old tried and true sales technique of building purchase urgency. You know, like, "That True Coat under coating is going to double in price next week, so better sign up today"!

I'm not sure where you live, but apparently it's 5:00 there.

So if the demand is more than there, why doesn't companies like Sony and Panasonic just make cameras with similar specs? In theory, since they have more facilities, employees, resources, and customer base than Red they could surely build a similar camera for cheaper and faster; and still sell it for the same price as Red.
If they felt that was their market, I'm certain they could do exactly that. After all, a Red isn't more complex than what the big manufacturers make, instead it's quite a bit simpler. All the processing is offloaded to a computer afterwards, so just storing raw sensor data would be a simpler process.

So, for whatever reason, presumably market size, Panasonic and Sony haven't decided that that's a market they want to go after with gusto. Arri has.

No, that's just how RedUser works. Jim could announce that he'd had major hemorrhoid surgery, and you'd see the exact same responses. After about five years of following it, this is a summary of Red and RedUser:

Jim makes announcement. Everyone responds by saying "unbelievable! This is the best! Hooray!"
Jim clarifies the announcement. Everyone responds by saying "umbelievable! This is corporate communication at its best! Hooray!"
Jim says there'll be a delay. Everyone says "Don't worry, Jim! You go anyway. Just work hard, we believe in you. Thanks for letting us know! This is the best! Hooray!"
Jim announces there'll be a price increase. Everyone says "Totally deserved! Just the way it should be! At least we heard about it early on and can start saving up more money to give to you! You're the best! Hooray!"

And that, in a nutshell, is every thread ever started on RedUser.

And that's the question many of us have asked over the years. And the main reason why I don't bother following the announcements anymore. Only announcement at all I want to hear about is the "now shipping" announcement. Anything between now and then is simply too "subject to change" to bother paying attention to.

it's like how every single transformers movie doesn't have a story due to writers strike.

I considered putting down a deposit for the Epic X to save on the cost increase next year. But I would be Stage 4 (no red one) meaning I would probably get it in my hands late 2012. By then, something a lot better for the buck will be out, so let the price go up I'm not buying.

No wonder we are in the economic mess we are in. We should leave it to the Chinese to figure out a way to make cheap and disposable little Red, Epics and Scarlet cameras. We owe them a few trillion bucks anyway.

Ah man....the truth hurts. :) That's EXACTLY my take (only you said it much clearer than I have been able to think it). :)

glass houses... smaller glass houses (or would it be thicker glass), are still made of glass.

perhaps it's me but I just find this a little ironic in context... but perhaps that's just me, perspective it's a funny thing.

This also could be because I've been battling a fever all day and I'm a little loopy, but it seems to me you can find that white noise anywhere there is a built up community(and people to suck up to, or fear due to the potential of an irrational retaliation or attack, or in the case of red being extra nice so as not to have a "bad attitude"), the taint or feel of it just changes depending on which side or point in life you are at or on, though it's never helpful or fun to wade through it's a fact of life people suck up to those above them(or those perceived to be above them or in a position of power and information).

and now back to battling my body, or is it helping my body battle the infection, I don't know I'm really not feeling well I hate fever dreams it feels like I've been in one all day.

Peace!

It's amazing what you can charge when there's absolutely no competition. C'mon Canon/Nikon/Panasonic. 4-5k is where it's at or you can keep arguing about your 8-bit vs 10-bit, your external recorders, twixtor, ninjas, your 1080 60p, etc. That's all irrelevant with the Red. And I'm no Red fanboy, just someone who understands supply and demand.

For me, I'd settle for 10-bit 1080 24p for $7000, but who has that, and why don't they?

By the second announcement of the imminent arrival of Scarlet, the great filming machine that was going to make super low budget indie filmmakers rich and famous with its magical powers, I started to see a pattern. 1001 announcements later the pattern hasn't changed a bit.
