Jack Daniel Stanley & Mark Johnson's REKINDLED

Well, I held to watching these things in alphabetical order until I'd viewed maybe the first 10 or so ... then when I threw this onto a flash drive for our lead actress to view along with some others (she's on dial-up, and wants to see some of the films - so I gathered a few I thought would be good), I went ahead & watched it.

On the first watch it was nearly flawless. I honestly think I scored this all the way across with 10's, except for maybe one category with a 9. I'll watch it again, along with some others, after all the initial views to scrutinize it some more, but so far it's hands down the best.

Wow, Jack! Seriously, wow. I also made some detailed comments in a Word doc., which I'll update this thread with later.

Yeah! Love the new banner as well! I LOVED that record in the film!!!

I have to ask, because I was going to do the same thing, do you have to get permission to quote people? I figure, "no" since they wrote it. But am still wondering because that was one of my first insticts this morning (to quote people in my sig.) Certainly not as fancy as you because I don't know flash, but would like to draw a little attention to my quaint film!

mostly I asked, since its a public forum you woudl technically be within your rights to quote them, but since its a community that I'm a part of I asked.

I say mosty because the first batch I threw on right before I sent PM's to ask and about 4 people haven't responded yet. So that email was a "just letting you know and let me know if you think the quote is innaporpriate in my sig or you don't want to be a part of rabid pimping" in which I case I continued on to say that I would of course pull them off immediately. Now that its up and running I ask after they post and before I add them to the banner.

you guys are an inspiration to me

I'm pretty sure there is something big in your head that with all that sort films is trying to get out and when the time comes to do your feature all that pieces will glue together in masterpiece. Keep being inspired from us.

Oh and one thing I have to ask, the fat lady is real in the intro?

Shakira? yep she's real :)

Love the creepy old tune played through-out.

Sets, amazing.

Acting spot-on.

Story, eerie and weird. Thumbs up! Perfectly fits into the six mins requirements.

You give David Lynch a run for his money.

i thnk the poeic way the male lead speaks is more lynchian than anything. but he was too soft about it i thought.

i dont think JDS will take it so seriously cynic....wont start going diva on us...or start sending junk to lynch's mail....

JDS didnt say it, so im not saying hell take it seriously, but someone else actually beleives this.

and I think that either this is how they wanted to show how much they loved Rekindled (by being way over the top enthousiastic about it) or they truly believe it and its their opinion so you have to accept that...

unless Lynch is your uncle so....;)

ps. you said before that you dont understand why a lot of people are crazy about some of the movies in here....i dont know if you ve seen the ones I have seen but i ve witnessed some really amazing work (always talking about independent film maker, amateurs and such) and some really boring/lazy work as well....but you cant judge people for getting over excited about somebody's work ...you may be offended artistically speaking but this is the way the world works....thought-opinion-words coming out of mouth....simple unavoidable process.. .(there are no filters in there I know...loool)

lets not hijack this thread, feel free to post problems with my opinions in its own thread if you guys want.

Hola everybody. I've been in airports and hospitals most of the recent time and haven't been able to participate as much as I'd like. (yesterday, in fact, I fell asleep in the terminal and missed my plane ... I woke up, saw people getting on and ran to the door only to find it was going to Vegas. Mine had left 30 minutes before! Kind of wish I had just gone to Vegas).

I wanted to mention how much I have appreciated having the chance to work under Jack's direction and how much I appreciate his generosity in allowing me to co-produce with him. Jack suggested the final closing title "For Brett Johnson" who is my nephew that many of you know was my co-producer for my own film. Brett remains in a coma in Denver but we all hope he recovers eventually. To me, that kind of thoughtfulness characterizes a side of Jack that one can miss. He works hard and expects a great deal from everyone, but he also is very fair and pays attention to those around him.

Jack and I have discussed putting some making-of stuff on this thread and I'm going to take the laboring oar to put some tid-bits together. It will be a pleasure and, with Jack's permission, I hope to share with you some of the effects that did not make the final cut.

Thanks again everyone for such sincere and thoughtful comments. I'm still going through films here but am blown away by the talent displayed in so many of them.

Since I have a few moments here before getting the rental car, I'll add one more post with some of my own observations and comments. When I first began corresponding with Jack I was interested in a lot of his techniques and his philosophies. I was particularly interested in the level of detail he added to previous films. When I became involved with Rekindled I realized that he works (insanely?) hard at this craft. I can't remember what draft the shooting script was, but the number of iterations was high for a 6-minute short. The thing was, that there were dramatic changes throughout its development as he tried out different things and saw how they affected the story.

Anyway, the level of detail began in earnest before I was ever attached to the project. For instance, those 'weird' pictures in the living room are collected examples of what are known as 'memento mori.' These are all DEAD people and in the 19th century photographers made a living taking pictures of people's dead relatives. These photographers would shoot daguerreotypes and they had all sorts of wires and props to make the dead person appear alive in many instances.

Jack then had Megan scribble out the eyes to give that weird touch to them and he went shopping for little battery powered flourescent lights that were velcroed above each picture for effect.

My point is that Jack had thought out this set way in advance and knew exactly what he wanted before he found it. Similarly, weeks before I came to New York we discussed the 'shrine' and Jack sent me newspaper headlines and article copy that he had written for me to use. I then used his text suggestions to print out full-scale newspapers that were used in the background. He even specified the appropriate years for the papers so I went to an on-line source and got New York newspapers for the years of Marty's murders. If you look closely and pause the DVD version you may be able to see references to Tim McVeigh and other events from the 1990's.

Jack is fastidious about these things. I recall that I took over the job of sponge-painter applying the dark red/brown over the red walls and my sponge blots didn't meet the grade. I just couldn't sponge-paint in the manner a psychopatic killer would have, I guess:) I happily turned over the sponge to J-Dan and went back to taping off the baseboard!

I look forward to sharing much more from the making-of footage we have as well as some more technical aspects of the lighting and camera work.

Cheers.
