GH2 It's Here!

Any GH2er who gets FCPX - please let us know how it handles AVCHD.

Thanks

(I will get it later today - I have to go out and do some work):cheesy:

Don't party too early, looks like Apple said goodbye to 'Pro' editing, lots ot rants already going on

so far im hearing that it has no multicam editing feature (which would suck monkey balls!) and that assigning different "scratch disks" is either hard to find or not an option.

me, im going to hold off for a while and let the dust settle...

Well that's a little extreme, but yes it appears there are certain features that are important to some people that are missing at present. Or not, may just be difficult to find within the new GUI. My only concern is that my graphic card may not be up to scratch and I don't want to blow $300 to find out. More research is needed.

I do like the interface. I know many don't, some because it looks less "professional" whatever that means, others because they don't want to move out of their comfort zone. Since I'm comfortable with iMovie, the learning curve for me is not that steep and the added functionality is just icing on the cake.

Will we be able to switch the Final Cut Pro X layout to a more traditional 2-monitor setup?

Simply put, no. Final Cut Pro X is a single window app, as will become common on Lion. It will behave like a single window app on Snow Leopard two. That means that the layout evolves around function but not with preset layouts like we have in Final Cut Pro 7.

For folks with double monitor setups, there is specific provision for sending either Bins or unified Viewer to the second monitor.

sorry, that makes this a no-go for me. at least for now. i dont want some software designer telling me how to arrange my workspace : (

I believe if you go into the Mac App Store and go to the page for it and it tells you if your computer hardware is compatible.

Edit: OR at least will tell you if it is not.

That's an easy one, HVXguy - it doesn't! Cheers, Oedipax

According to Apple's website, FCPX supports native import & editing of AVCHD files and also supports transcoding them to ProRes:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/#supported-formats-and-io

See also FCPX documentation:
http://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/mac/10.0/#

... and specifically the GH2 (and I'd be surprised if it didn't support the GH1, too):

You're right Peter, I misspoke somewhat - it does support AVCHD coming off SD cards with the whole directory structure still intact. What it does not support are MTS files copied off those cards and renamed/organized in a sensible manner.

It also seems to slam the gamma of any DSLR-originated file you give it (see this thread for screens). If you manually lift the blacks, the information does appear to be there at least.

Once I got a few GH2 and 5D files in the timeline not looking terrible, played around with auto-match, and fiddled with the color correction a bit, then played back without rendering, I started liking FCPX a bit more ;)

So can we confirm with you that it does not support drag and drop AVCHD footage like Premiere does? Can you try it for me? Because that would be a big no go if I can't open or drop an MTS file into the project.

It is not drag and drop in the sense that you can grab any old AVCHD .MTS file off your drive and drop it into the timeline and start editing. However, if you still have the original card, or copied the entire directory structure to a local drive, you can import that and start editing without transcoding. So basically we either need a utility to recreate the full directory structure with clips we've renamed/reorganized or we need Apple to add native .MTS drag/drop support (which frankly it blows my mind isn't already included - you can work exactly this way with Canon .MOVs for instance).

Why is Adobe smarter than Apple? I can play GH2 .mts files right off an SD card with Premiere CS5. I guess I need to get busy and bone up on Premiere.
