Issues with AVCHD SH Mode!

No, I've seen that too and is another thing I don't like about the kit lens. I also find it breathes when auto focus locks on to another focus point.

The black frame issue is usually seen on the NLE timeline when you are looking closely at the footage and might notice a black flash. When you step back to see what it was, a single black frame is discovered. So far, for me, I believe it has only recently happened and is infrequent (I could live with it), but I need to check the material to find out if it actually occurred earlier. And will the issue become more frequent, as Super8 has experienced? I do believe though that if this happened on every camera, it would have been picked up sooner by users...

Hmmm, I chose 720p50 because I thought it was the best bet (compared to 1080p25).

ok..I stand corrected. I took your advice True and I brought it into the timeline . To the naked eye it appears as a black frame...upon closer inspection, it is an issue of the aperture adjusting on the camera. It is puzzling because our lenses are manual and locked during shooting. It looks like one stop difference.

Here are a couple of pictures. The first frame is the correct one...the second one is the drop on aperture...then it goes back to normal. It only happens during one frame.

This doesn't seem to be the case here, but the way that the exposure varies with zoom has been discussed at length in an earlier thread. The GH1 appears to compensate for zoom (brightening in steps as you zoom in, which is the opposite of what you'd expect) regardless of any setting, at least on the stock lens. There are also threads discussing jumps in aperture when in shutter priority manual mode, rather undermining (imho) the theory that the iris is stepless.

My personal view is that in the GH1 even in manual mode it's making some decisions itself (for instance you can't turn off the lens correction processing on the stock lens, and maybe part of that is affecting luma under some circumstances).

I could not agree with you more. I am convinced that the GH-1 regardless of being set to manual, is doing whatever the heck it wants to do. We have never used the stock lens with our GH-1...only manual Nikon lenses.

This is concerning as some of our shots basically are ruined as when we slow mo the footage shot, the problem becomes more apparent and hence useless.

Isn't this just because the aperture is changing? The farther you zoom the less wide-open the lens allows. Of course this doesn't apply if you were shooting above ~f6.

Not in this case. Even if you set the camera such that the aperture should not be changing, it still acts like it is "flicking" the aperture and you can still here it clicking at the points where it flickers. I've tried every possible setting. There is nothing you can do to stop it.

The "black frames" I saw were actual opaque single back frames -- strange. But I've only seen a few (and I hope it stays that way!). Seems our problems are different after all...Most of my shooting is with manual primes, which I though meant all auto processes would have to be turned off -- are cameras getting too clever for my own good?
